In this shot as oriented the UP is to the left, WI is at the bottom and you can see the MI thumb 2/3 of the way up the photo (and the sun glinting on Lake Huron). 14 October 2023 · Solar Eclipse #annjdoetkott Oh, I hopped and exclaimed with glee upon seeing my one (count it, *one*) good eclipse photo!! Woot!! Here in Minnesota, daybreak started off with clear skies and Venus shining brightly in the east. Dawn brought with her wispy periwinkle clouds, and by the time the sun crested the treetops, well, I couldn't see the sun! I was *crying emojis* all morning. I doodled a 'celestial kiss' to soothe my psyche. (Wait, did you think the moon and sun are siblings? Eep.) I watched the clock eagerly and took photos of migrating warblers who stopped by my woods for a break. The gray squirrel watched me suspiciously, her little hands tucked into her chest, surrounded by fermenting crabapples. 🍂 My hope buoyed after my dear friend in California sent me a photo of the eclipse, taken inside a small break of clouds. I waited outside, arms laden with phone, SLR, eclipse glasses... The umbrella waited in the entry (yep, it was raining that morning, too!). There! Wait, was that it?! Argh! Another slight opening shone brightly as the semi-shielded sun peeked through. I took a video with my phone, squinting, no idea in hell if I was recording this momentous occasion successfully. Finally, finally! #minnesotagirl #mnauthor #minnesotaeclipse #solareclipse #solareclipse2023 #crescentmoon #crescentsun #annulareclipse #thanksnasa #skywatchers #cosmic #celestialkiss #sunandmoon # areyoustillreadingmyhashtags

We have reached the other shore and now it’s time to go back. I am grateful and honored to be a witness to this historic weekend and the journey that began with a visit to NASA Goddard when my daughter was 9 years-old and Jason Dworkin, the mission scientist explained the timeline of this mission based on her age and milestones. I am going home with a toolbox of learnings, memories, and friendships from this inaugural in:SPACE influencer event with Lockheed Martin. Congratulations @nasa and @lockheedmartin for again, inspiring us to do more #science and discover the paths less traveled to unknown destinations. Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex Straddling the constellations Ophiuchus and Scorpius, the active star forming Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex is one of the most colorful regions of the night sky. Located only about 460 light years distant, it is also one of the closest. The complex consists of bright, colorful reflection nebulae mixed with dark nebula. The heart of the complex is illuminated with yellow lights from the red Supergiant Antares, but there are other regions, such as IC 4603 and IC 4604 that reflect the light of Type-B Blue Giant stars. In addition to the dust and nebula, there are two globular clusters - the bright Messier 4 to the right of center of the frame, and the smaller, NGC 6144 partially obscured by the Antares Nebula. I took the exposures that make up this image over three hot and humid nights in July. Texas, I appreciate your dark skies and clear weather, but it would be nice if you could lay off the heat a bit. I took a couple weeks to postprocess the data to get what you see here. I don't know if perfection is attainable, but I think I'm getting better at postprocessing and I'm happy with the result. More imaging time would always be better. @nasawebb stole my thunder a bit by releasing an image of the same object for its 1 year anniversary. #thanksnasa Technical Details: @zwoasi 2600mc Pro Rokinon 135m f2.0 @sky_watcher_official Star Adventurer 2.0 Pro Optolong UV/IR Cut Filter 4.67 hours Integration time #astrophotography #rhoophiuchi

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs. Today, after a multi-year hiatus after the pandemic, I returned back onsite to @nasagoddard to get a refresh on the #EOS missions and #satelliteoperations. While it still remained quiet on-site because it’s Monday and people working remotely, it’s still great to see that our space crafts are mobilized and functioning well in space, every so often sending back #data to mission scientists and engineers on the ground here on Earth. One of the highlights was seeing the Nancy Grace Roman #telescope being assembled and how much field of view images and data she will give with visible light in deep space. The Roman Space Telescope is a NASA observatory designed to settle essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics. field of view that is 100 times greater than the Hubble infrared instrument, capturing more of the sky with less observing time James Webb was also built in the same clean room, the largest air filtration clean room on the planet here at #NASAGoddard. It’s always wonderful to visit the missions like #Hubble and #JWST, but this time was special that I got to see the flight operations for the earth observation #satellitemissions such as TERRA, AQUA, AURA, LRO, GPM, etc. that provides a ton of #climatedata to us. #Science and #engineering are awesome. A huge thank you to my #NASASocial buddy Kwasi for spending time with me today to share his work and of course, our requisite Rubik’s cube refresher lesson. (See my IG story for the tutorial!) Glass always wants to be 6mm thick bc of surface tension. So at the right temp if a piece is thicker it will spread and if it's thinner it will pull up it's corner and draw in. Most of this glass is thicker so the footprint of each piece has kind of bubbled out. That's how you get night round shapes :) #glassphysics #likehoney #viscosity #surfacetension #fusedglass #hotglass #meltymelty #bullseyeglass #1400degrees #dichroic #adhdentrepreneur #oohshiny #thanksnasa #ooak #feelinhothothot

Last night @nasa flew their Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, into Dimorphos, this rock 7 million miles from Earth. DART was the size of a soft drink machine, and was flying at 14,760 mph, or 4.1 miles per second. Dimorphos is 278 meters across, roughly 3 football fields. Now we’ll see if the collision was enough to alter its orbit so we can do the same for some future asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Go science!! #thanksnasa photo credit DART RIP

*Ksht* “Houston, we have a nēne...” *ksht* Visitors to Haleakalā often compare the volcanic wilderness to that of the Moon. It's not surprising, considering that both landscapes involve volcanic forces! An interesting distinction is the nature of the craters on either one. The Moon serves as our solar system bouncer, taking a lot of hits from asteroids that would otherwise reach Earth. Because of this, the Moon is pocked with impact craters. In contrast, the famous “crater” at Haleakalā may not even be considered a crater by some, because it was erosion, not a volcanic explosion or a meteorite impact, that caused the spectacular valley we see today. Today, we celebrate the Apollo Missions, which began 53 years ago. July 20 is the day when Apollo 11 touched down on the surface of the Moon. While most of us may never get to walk on the Moon, the Haleakalā Summit District is a close substitution... with the added bonus of a breathable atmosphere already installed! What does the crater landscape remind you of? #FindYourPark #Apollo11 #Moon #Mahina #ThanksNASA Photo 1: NPS Photo 2: NASA / Eugene Cernan LM

What a time to be alive. Here's my smart watch, which will let me customize the background. It's a blue sunset, a photo taken on Mars by Curiosity, 6 years ago. Usually, it's a bird, sure, but if you can have a photo of a blue Martian sunset, why not. By the way, humans have had photos of Martian sunrises since 1978, courtesy of Viking 2 lander. . . . . . #mars #martiansunset #blue #thanksnasa
