A finales de los años sesenta del siglo pasado, de la mano de la revolución del afrobeat en África occidental, surgen las primeras bandas de rock con verdadera esencia africana. Más allá de ser el rock hecho en África, el afro rock fusiona a la perfección los elementos musicales del rock anglosajón, con los de la música tradicional y contemporánea del continente africano. El estilo único del afro rock, está marcado por el sonido de los efectos de fuzz y wah wah en la guitarra eléctrica, por el groove del bajo, las líneas psicodélicas del órgano y la polirritmia en la percusión. Muy al estilo del afrobeat, una sección sólida de metales también era común en la sonoridad de las principales bandas del género. Todo esto aderezado con elementos de funk, soul y música afrocaribeña. Los principales referentes, surgieron del epicentro musical de África occidental: Nigeria y Ghana. Sin embargo, en países como Zambia y Kenia, hubo una importante movida que tuvo influencia en el desarrollo del sonido afro rock. Originating as an army band after the 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐫 (𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐫), it contributed to the outpouring of upbeat music produced by young people in Nigeria in response to the darkness of the recently concluded civil conflict. The heatwave's finally broken here in Lancaster, and intermittent downpours are making it difficult to leave the house* — but the baby's asleep, so I guess what else is there to do but read and listen to records? . . I've had this ace Soundway comp for a while, but was reminded of it by a mate sending me a tune by The Funkees, and saying I'd like it. To which I responded that I did and I'm pretty sure I had the record, which prompted another interminable search that was (yet again) only ended when I realised it was stashed elsewhere. Nice to be reunited, anyway — Dancing Time is proper fun, and indeed suitably funky. . . There's definitely a rawer, bluesier feel to some of the tunes on this one. I'm not sure if that's being from the east of the country and not a metropolis like Lagos, but it gets pretty loose and psychedelic, which I'm definitely here for. Well worth seeking out, even if you're not an aficionado of east Nigerian 70s afro-rock. (And I feel like if you are an expert on the above, you'd probably know this group already...) . . *To be honest, I'm not sad to see things cool down a bit. In the early 1970s The Funkees were the number-one east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. Stoking the dancefloor was the young band’s first priority and The Funkees were often playing through the night, seven days a week. Formed at the tail end of the Nigerian civil war by Harry Mosco Agada (then a guitarist in Celestine Ukwu’s Music Royals) the band played for the army’s 12th Brigade in Aba and went through a rapid series of membership changes in search of the perfect line-up of players. It wasn't long before promoters in the UK came calling and The Funkees packed up their instruments and moved to London where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit. Here they recorded two seminal albums before finally breaking up in 1977 amidst some controversy. This collection features for the first time all of their Nigerian 45s alongside the best of their UK album material and is accompanied by a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan, who lived in London until his passing in 2018. #thefunkees #vinyl #igrdelaware

Everyday Has Got A New Dream By Dr. Footswitch (1975) featuring the song (Everyday Has Got A New Dream) “Now I know and I plead, of the things I can receive, ever since I was younger I used to dream a dream of you” “Everyday Has Got A New Dream” by the one and only Dr. Footswitch, who lets be honest is killin it! With the wig in this iconic zamrock cover, it definitely serves as one of the greatest by all means. Teddy Khuluzwa is a born native of Zimbabwe, many people knew the country at the time as Southern Rhodesia. It’s said by Jagari Chanda (vocalist and founder of WITCH) that Teddy was the first ever Zambian he had ever met who cut a record, which probably came about prior in the year of 1974 somewhere in Zimbabwe. However in the 60s and early 70s Teddy was found playing guitar alongside zamrock greats like Rikki Ililonga, Dereck Mbao, Keith Mlevhu and Ricky Banda in bands like the Rave Five and Lusaka Beatles. Though Rikki Ililonga himself recalls starting the band as Dr. Footswitch at the time Teddy was known as “Teddy Jagger,” the alternate version of the story however has Teddy himself picking up the nickname and founding the band based on his abilities with the guitar wah wah pedal, which he exceeded in. He released two albums in Zambia, Liquid Iron and Everyday Has Got A New Dream, along with a handful of singles in Southern Rhodesia, all of which occurring in the middle to late 70s. Although he was truly fascinating and his sound unique, he found success short. By the mid 80s he left Zambia and Zimbabwe for South Africa, where it is assumed he died. Though the story of Dr. Footswitch is quite short and unknown, everyone who is part of the zamrock community is familiar his name. A Zimbabwean who adopted Zambia as his home and took on the heat of being a musician, it’s quite outstanding how with such little resources Teddy made the best out of it. Though few people know his name now it is clear that Dr. Footswitch didn’t come from the ordinary, for it is only one special individual and one alone who can hold that name as his own and he is….Teddy Khuluzwa

Dread Eyes & Sunshine Love By Rikki Ililonga (1976), (1978) featuring the songs (Silver Lining) & (Take It Light) One Label, Two Albums And One Badass Musician… Rikki Ililonga Zambian born musician Rikki Ililonga was born in the year of 1949 in Zambezi in what is now known as Valo Valley. In the years of his youth Rikki described it as sheltered, and though one’s soul may feel that’s way it didn’t stop Rikki from growing his roots as a musician, as a young boy Rikki’s influences began with Makishi music for it was there that he began to have a passion for the rhythmic drumming and dancing that Makishi music produced, but it didn’t go that way at first. In his adult teen years Rikki attended Syracuse University here in the US through a program called UNIP where he took courses on political leadership and even was part of “The Zambia Youth Services” a precursor to what was “The Zambia National Services”. Though the the path Rikki had paved for himself showed nothing but successful certainty he took a choice to let it go for what was his true passion. Upon his return to Zambia Rikki met with musicians Ndara Mbao, Aliki Kunda, Siliya Lungu, and John Bobby Otieno to form the band that what we know as “Musi O Tunya”. Following the release of “Wings Of Africa” Rikki took his leave from “Musi O Tunya” to release his solo geographically named album “Zambia” which included the hit “Shebeen Queen”, the album was based much around the psych of zamrock and the touch of folk and the traditional African tempo. Fast forward a year later Rikki goes on to win and accept “The Makumbi Song Festival Award” in the year of 1976. It is said that Rikki now spends his days within his his homes in the counties of Denmark and of course Zambia. It is without saying that Zamrock wouldn’t be the genre it is now without its true pioneers, the musicians who built it from the ground up. For it is Rikki Ililonga that we have to thank for his presence in the Zambian Music Scene.
THE FUNKEES The Funkees were a Nigerian Afro-rock group started in the late 1960s. After the Nigerian Civil War, they relocated to London in 1973 where they became popular amongst the West African and Caribbean community. Their songs, with lyrics in Igbo and English, were amongst the upbeat music produced by young Nigerians in response to the horrors of the civil war. The Group released two albums; “Point of No Return” (1974) and “Now I'm A Man” (1976). Members of the band included Harry Mosco, Chyke Madu, Sonny Akpabio, Jake N. Sollo, Danny Heibs, Tony Mallett, Mohammed Ahidjo and Roli Paterson. After performing at FESTAC’77, the Group embarked on a Nigerian tour, after which they disbanded. Lead singer, Harry Mosco went on to be a solo artiste, releasing five albums.
