Baseball is a game of DISCIPLINE, strategy, instinct, resilience, AMBITION, and emotional endurance. In the youth baseball years, all training opportunities need to be highly - and truly - developmental. It’s about emphasizing the fundamentals, fostering a deep understanding and LOVE for (the strategy and nuances) of game, building their instincts, and empowering each player to OWN their OWN journey. From the earliest moments they play the game - whatever that age may be - they can learn to understand the game, take responsibility for their development and choices in the sport, and learn daily from both successes and failures. This is true for any sport. For ANY path in life. Today’s team feature is our ‘23 Bronco Gold/Platinum team: the San Francisco Sea Lions. Perhaps you were lucky enough to get yourselves into today’s @sfgiants game and learn the story of the original brave and determined Sea Lions of 1946. If you don’t know their story, here ya go: The SF Sea Lions were members of the West Coast Negro League in 1946. No investors/owners or even the resources to buy uniforms and equipment. They built their team from the grassroots and inherited what they could, including their uniforms from a previous team, the San Francisco Cubs. Hence, the cub on the front and not a sea lion. The Sea Lions only had one season together due to the league collapsing, but they continued on as a barnstorming team. Though short-lived, they were the sole Negro team to play in San Francisco AND arguably their most famous alum: Toni Stone is one of very few women to ever play in the Negro Leagues. ⬆️ this SFYBL team of 4th and 5th graders paid their respects in uniform and in spirit this past Spring…. as the youngest team in their division, they had heads and hearts full of dreams more than twice their size. They left everything on the field week in and week out…. including a fierce battle in the championship game. According to their coaches, they never took a moment of their opportunity and privilege to play this great game for granted 💪🏼 Great season, kids! The Importance of Physical Conditioning. It is an essential part of training so that youth players can develop the necessary strength, endurance, agility and speed to continually improve in the sport, perform at their best on the field, reduce the risk of injury, improve overall health, and it sets them up for long-term athletic success. 1. Improved strength, endurance, speed and agility will have direct benefits on a player‘a level of play in every area: throwing, hitting, catching, pitching, and fielding…. 2. With proper conditioning, players are less likely to suffer from injuries, such as muscle strains or ligament tears. It also helps them recover more quickly from the bumps and bruises and inflammation that inevitably happens along the way, which is especially important for youth athletes who are still growing and developing. 3. Physical conditioning can improve a player's overall health and fitness, which will have benefits beyond baseball. Besides the physical health benefits, physical conditioning is essential to the highest levels of mental health and wellness. 4. Putting in the work to develop good habits around physical conditioning at a young age sets young players up for success in the future no matter what they pursue. By prioritizing fitness and conditioning in youth baseball, players can develop a solid foundation of athleticism that can help them excel in other sports or athletic pursuits as they grow older. The best part about physical conditioning is that it can be done outside of the designated practice times. It can be done inside on a rainy day. It can even be done over zoom as a team. The 2nd installment of our #rulesforsuccess series is focused on PITCHING. The guidelines for pitching are there to protect and preserve the physical & mental well-being of our players in the present AND for their future in the sport ⚾️It is safer not only for their arm but also for their brains and emotions, which both need a rest from the mound as well. Plus, it gives them the chance to focus equally on other aspects of the game to improve everywhere and avoid burnout. If your player/s is involved in more than 1 league or simultaneously playing travel ball, ALL pitches count towards ONE total. Please respect your player/s enough to not exceed these daily limits or shorten rest periods between pitching appearances. If they work with a pitching coach at a high level of training intensity, please incorporate planning for those sessions with the same guidelines in mind. Our 1st installment in our #rulesforsuccess series is about 🥁 🥁 🥁 BATS! This message is for anyone and everyone participating in recreational youth leagues. The rules are not confusing, and the reason to follow them is even more important than the rules. Using a non-conforming or illegal bat in youth baseball is not enhancing performance, it is cheapening it…. It isn’t building one’s future, it is limiting it. The USABat certification standard was put in place to reach a wood-like performance standard across youth baseball. In addition to the obvious impacts on safety, there are important benefits to ensuring a higher quality of play and future for the sport of baseball. And, we can assure you that even if you could fool talent scouts and recruiters with these bat hacks, they aren’t showing up to your local recreational league games or practices. WHAT DOES ENHANCE PERFORMANCE? Growing respect for the game, building strength, good mechanics, work ethic, hustle, resilience, HAVING FUN, and good sportsmanship. Let the results take care of themselves. ✌🏼❤️⚾️ Final note: In any game, an umpire is always right. Their job is to ensure the safety and integrity of the game. Tuesdays are for teaching, and for this first installment we’ve got an important one for our COACHES. To be entrusted with a coaching role in youth sports is a great privilege w/enormous responsibility. You are not only impacting the youth that you coach but also the ones you compete against. Every word you say, every emotion you express, every choice you make…. is an opportunity to shape (or tear down) the character, confidence, and capabilities of every child on that field (gym, court, etc…). The human brain - even for adults - is only capable of focusing on one thing at a time. Sure, some adults get pretty good at multitasking after years of education, experience, and intention-setting, but our children are nowhere close and YOU are part of the village that supports them on that journey. KEEP YOUR COACHING WORDS, EMOTIONS, and CHOICES rooted in a desire to motivate, inspire, and cultivate growth in your players, which should NEVER include tearing down another child. Shouting to your batter negative comments about a pitcher is not helping your batter and is harming another child’s brain as it desperately tries to stay focused on one BIG thing. Use constructive coaching: “You’ve got this, you know the zone; You see a pitch you like, swing hard; Step out, take a practice swing, control the swing with your core; 1 ball, 2 strikes, you’ve gotta battle” It’s extremely simple. Extremely effective. If one of your players makes a mistake, stay constructive: “Next time, charge that ground ball instead of waiting for it to get to you; Remember you’re backing up Jules on a throw to 2nd; Outfielders, keep everything in front of you and make a quick throw to your cut-off” And if you see a child on an opposing team make a great play, strike out the side convincingly, or smash an oppo field double, affirm them…. Let your players see you respecting the game and modeling what integrity and truly great leadership looks like. Lastly, take a page out of this coach’s book ⬆️ and get in there and do the work with your players! Love to see it! #teachingtuesday

Coming in at a strong # 2 in our Top 7 in 7 reasons we LOVE baseball with: BASEBALL REQUIRES (& TEACHES) TEAM CAMARADERIE. Not just teamwork, but total commitment to and respect for each other. If you saw yesterday’s post you know that it’s is a a very unique team sport. Though the team outcome is the only outcome that matters, it is a series of individual performances that gets a team there. Everyone has to do their part, players have to communicate well, know and respect each other’s roles, depend on each other, lift each other up in the harder moments, and BACK EACH OTHER UP! Lots of mistakes and failures happen in baseball…. It’s just that kind of game. And, no one improves without failing and learning from it. BUT, there’s almost always a contingency plan to have in place… when a catcher knows she/he can depend on their outfielders to back up their throw if things go awry, they will try to throw out more runners and the more they get to try, the more they improve. When a pitcher knows she/he can depend on their defense to do it’s best, they can relax and focus on doing their best and improving their skill instead of getting through the inning striking everyone out….. when a SS knows their outfielders will be there to back them up, they’re going to take bigger risks diving for balls and eventually they will get better at it!
