Before we had two children I was convinced that going from 0-1 was harder. Jack was a high cryer and had colic, reflux- the lot. That coupled together with postnatal depression made having the first child the most challenging time in my life yet. But having two- nothing quite prepared me for the missing my first child, even though he’s in the room, and the split family with the tactic of divide and conquer. With that comes zero breaks- none. Frequently, I'm asked how we instill a sense of remorse in children. I believe remorse is inherent rather than taught. However, we can inadvertently teach shame and guilt, which may resemble remorse but can be psychologically taxing. Demonstrating genuine apologies to children, showing them how to apologize with sincerity and humility when we've wronged someone, is how we guide them in handling feelings of remorse. Children will naturally experience remorse; it's how they interpret and act on those feelings that matters. Do they internalize shame and struggle to express remorse, or do they acknowledge their feelings and offer genuine apologies, allowing for healing and growth? This so-called life - April 28, 2024 A week that started out sunny, then turned rainy, then a solid mix of sun and rain. The trees and flowers are loving it. All the emotions from the kids from happiness, to extreme grumpiness and everything in between. Erin and I got to attend Kai’s assembly at school where he presented in front of a large crowd. He did an amazing job! Then I got out with friends for a much needed happy hour after the ridiculous work week we all had. The weekend started with celebrating Rory’s birthday at a super fun indoor playground, followed by a chaotic and fun lunch. The kids had a blast and were exhausted. Not pictured - Lucy projectile vomiting exorcist-style in the car on the way home 🤮 We got out to OMSI on Sunday for the usual activities there. The dinosaur exhibit is still up and the kids enjoyed that it was moving and growling today. After some rest, I put together Lucy’s new big-girl bed and she is ecstatic about having a pink/purple theme going for it. @responsive_parenting Feeling guilt or shame because you did something hurtful to someone else, is actually a sign that you’re a kind person. Kind people feel guilty and embarrassed and remorseful when they treat someone in a hurtful way. So if you are feeling guilty or shameful about something you’ve done to someone (perhaps your child), know that those feelings, although painful, they have a purpose. They are there to help you align your behaviour with your moral compass. I used to see guilt as a battle but now I see it as an invitation to validate myself and practice self-compassion. I don’t push it away or drown in it. I accept the feeling and thank it for letting me know I was doing something that didn’t align with my true self. I have passed this on to my eldest child. When he feels shame and guilt for something he did (which can be very overwhelming for a child) I remind him that those feelings tell me that he is a kind person because kind people feel bad when they hurt people. Feeling guilt or shame because you did something hurtful to someone else, is actually a sign that you’re a kind person. Kind people feel guilty and embarrassed and remorseful when they treat someone in a hurtful way. So if you are feeling guilty or shameful about something you’ve done to someone (perhaps your child), know that those feelings, although painful, they have a purpose. They are there to help you align your behaviour with your moral compass. I used to see guilt as a battle but now I see it as an invitation to validate myself and practice self-compassion. I don’t push it away or drown in it. I accept the feeling and thank it for letting me know I was doing something that didn’t align with my true self. I have passed this on to my eldest child. When he feels shame and guilt for something he did (which can be very overwhelming for a child) I remind him that those feelings tell me that he is a kind person because kind people feel bad when they hurt people. We bought two of these from #Amazon and audio books and music from #eBay . No FM/AM radio or internet so parents can feel more at ease with allowing children to use unsupervised.
