In Lumi’s case, we’ve been practicing to maintain a tidy home together since she was about 2 years old. 💡 Here are my 5 tips to get your children involved in tidying up: 1. Normalize it. You don’t have to do all the tidying up yourself. No matter what the composition of your household is, get everyone involved. You are a family and this is simply how we do things around here. My top tip for not having to tidy up after people (including partners ;))! 2. Teach them. Do you remember your mother screaming at you to tidy up your room when you were young? And that you didn’t have a clue where to start? Well, let’s avoid that for the next generation, shall we? Apply a system and maintain it. Give clear instructions, for instance: please put your cars back in the box. 3. Start small. Don’t expect any miracles. You can get a 2-year-old to help you sort socks. In the beginning, you’ll have to tidy together. Later on, the child will be able to do it themselves or with their friends. 4. Make it fun. Nobody likes to nag or listen to nagging. Keep spirits positive. You could even make a pre-bedtime ritual of putting on a ‘tidying up song’. If you have a system, you’ll only need a few minutes to get things back in order. 5. Just because you use it doesn't mean you have to keep it... Sounds weird, right? But hear me out! Ask yourself the question of what would you use instead if the item broke or if you lost it. One example would be a particular knife that you use to cut vegetables. If it wasn't there, could you use a different knife that does the job too? Do you really need 10 different knives to cut different things? Probably not. Could you reduce your knife collection by 50% and still get all your veggies, fruit, fish cut etc? I guess the answer would be yes. The same can be applied to paint brushes, mixing bowls, scissors, make up utensils and so on. Especially items with just one intended use like an egg slicer or rice cooker. How does clutter affect your diet? It may not seem the most obvious connection but clutter really can affect your diet. I hear it time and time again from clients, especially when decluttering their kitchens. They tell me how overwhelmed they feel by all the cluttered work surfaces and disorganised cupboards and drawers that are so full that they don't open properly anymore. They don't feel like wanting to cook and trying to spend as little time as possible in their kitchens which results in lots of take aways and ready meals. When decluttering, my clients often discover all those gadgets at the back of their cupboards that they haven't used in ages as there's no room for it or they haven't been able to reach or see it behind all the other clutter. Wouldn't it be much nicer to cook in a clutterfree kitchen where you can access all your gadgets and utensils easily and see all the food you've got? With clear work surfaces and neatly organised drawers and cupboards. And imagine how much quicker and easier tidying up and cleaning would be afterwards.
