Sister Bridget Waldorf, right, was photographed with Jim Coleman, an actor playing Fr. Augustus Tolton in a recent production of "Tolton: From Slave to Priest" near Dallas, Texas. Fr. Tolton was the first African-American priest in the United States. Born a slave in Missouri, he fled during the Civil War with his mother and siblings to Quincy, Illinois, where he was educated by SSND! The show was put on by @Saint.Luke.Productions , who has been entertaining, inspiring and evangelizing through theater, film, audio productions and other media since 1980. Their productions on the Gospels and the lives of the saints have been seen by millions of people worldwide. #WeAreSSND #VenerableAugustusTolton #Tolton #FromSlaveToPriest #saintlukeproductions @schoolsistersnotredame ssnd

WOW! Thank you to actor Jim Coleman and the whole team for “Tolton: From Slave to Priest” by Saint Luke Productions (www.toltondrama.com)! Seriously, this play is amazing. Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) was the first black priest in the USA and his story is nothing short of heroic. And the production is so well done! It is an artistically innovative combination of song, film and acting that weaves together faith, family, racism, anti-Catholic prejudice, forgiveness, faithfulness and so much more. I was super impressed at how theologically rich it was, and yet it was anything but abstract or theoretical – on the contrary, the art succeeded in letting the theology illumine the story in a “real” and moving way. Honestly, I was at times moved to tears (especially during the scenes when Fr. Tolton or his mother was praying)! It made me excited to be a Catholic, to be a priest and just simply to try my best to live a holy life. The play is in Dallas for just a few more days with shows at St. Michael the Archangel Church (4/21), at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (4/22), and University Catholic Center at UTD (4/26). Do yourself a favor and go see it! You can go to this website to register for tickets: https://dallascatholic.org/event/tolton #tolton #saints

Venerable Fr. John Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) was the first publically known black priest in the United States. He was born into slavery in Missouri and escaped in 1862 with his mother and siblings by crossing the Mississippi River into Illinois. Augustus would later be ordained to the priesthood in Rome in 1886. He was well known for his eloquent sermons and beautiful singing voice. After years of opposition in his assignment in Quincy, Illinois, he was reassigned to Chicago, where he founded St. Monica’s Catholic Church as a black “national parish.” #blackcatholichistorymonth #bchm #november #catholic #venerable #tolton #venerableaugustustolton #augustustolton #ColumbusCatholic

Celebrating Black Catholic History Month! Venerable Father Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) Father Tolton was a former slave raised as a Catholic. He was turned down numerous times during his quest to be a postulate. With assistance from Fathers Peter McGirr and Theodore Wegmann, School Sister of Notre Dame Herlinde Sick, Franciscan Fathers Michael Richardt and Francis Ostrop he would pursue his studies for the priesthood in Rome. After six years of studying, he was ordained a priest in Rome in 1886 at St. John Lateran Basilica and would return to the United States to serve Black Catholics in Quincy, Illinois. He celebrated his first Mass in Quincy at St. Boniface Church on July 18th. He would eventually become pastor of St. Joseph Church in Chicago. Father Tolton was the first publicly acknowledged Black Roman Catholic Priest in the United States. He was granted the title "Venerable" in 2019. https://tolton.archchicago.org/ #FatherAugustusTolton #AugustusTolton #FatherTolton #Tolton #ToltonCatholic #PraytheRosary #BlackCatholics #BlackCatholicHistoryMonth #BlackCatholicHistory #StFrancisofAssisi #StFrancisofAssisiChurch #TheFranciscans #TheJosephites #YearofStJoseph #PraytheRosary #Adoration #PrayforEachOther #BreauxBridge #StMartinParish #LouisianaCatholics #HolyRosary #GiveCatholic #FratelliTutti #iGiveCatholic #GivingTuesday2023

What a delight it was to have Jim Coleman present his multi-media one-man show on the life of Fr. Augustus Tolton, America’s first black American priest. It’s a moving story, well told – and we were moved, too, in seeing how much it meant to Jim Coleman to have His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory, America’s first black American Cardinal, in attendance. We were proud to co-sponsor the event along with the Sr. Thea Bowman Committee, The Office of the President, The Busch School of Business, The Rome School of Music, Drama, and Art, Campus Ministry, the Office of Alumni Relations, The Center for Cultural Engagement, The Napa Institute, Glorybell and Juan Jose Daboub and Shelli and Andreas Widmer. Celebrate Tolton's Triumph 👇 https://www.etsy.com/listing/1558876920 Father Augustus Tolton, America's first Roman Catholic priest, was a true icon whose legacy still pulses with energy in the vibrant streets of Quincy, Illinois, and far beyond. Born into the crucible of slavery in Missouri in 1854, Father Tolton blazed an extraordinary trail in the realm of the Catholic Church and the civil rights movement in the United States. Father Tolton's journey to the priesthood was a raw, gritty tale of resilience. He faced relentless prejudice and was barred from U.S. seminaries due to his race. But he didn't back down. He defied the odds by venturing all the way to Rome, where he honed his priestly skills, and in 1886, he was ordained as a priest. When he returned to America, it was nothing short of historic – he became the very first African American priest in the nation. In Quincy, Illinois, Father Tolton's presence was electric, crackling with energy and purpose. He took the reins as the pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a multicultural congregation where racial lines blurred in a time of searing segregation. His message of love, unity, and justice transcended color, setting hearts ablaze with his compelling vision. Father Tolton's Quincy legacy is palpable, pulsating through the very streets he once trod. St. Joseph Church, his former parish, stands as a testament to his enduring influence. It's a place where visitors flock to absorb the aura of his life and mission. Father Tolton's ripple effect extends beyond Quincy, fueling the ongoing struggle for racial equality and social justice across the nation. Today, Father Augustus Tolton's spirit thrives in Quincy, igniting the urban landscape with a vivacious, unrelenting energy. His memory is a beacon of faith, fortitude, and the relentless pursuit of a fairer world, inspiring all who follow in his footsteps. His legacy pulses with the rhythm of urban life, a powerful reminder that the fight for justice and unity is a force that knows no bounds. #QuincyProud #quincy #illinois #quincyil #catholic #saint #tolton #history

On this Juneteenth, let us not forget that three of the six African American Canonization Candidates were once enslaved. Gaining freedom by emancipation proclamation, manumission, or in a daring escape to freedom, all three lived lives of devout spirituality, love of Christ, love of neighbor, and devotion to the Eucharist. Can we say the same about those that enslaved them? For the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. 1 Sam16:7 1. Fr. Augustus Tolton was born enslaved near Hannibal, MO. His courageous mother escaped slavery with Augustus and his siblings, crossing the Mississippi into Illinois with Confederate soldiers closely pursuing them. They began a new life in Quincy, IL, where young Augustus impressed his pastor with his piety and faith. Augustus served as an altar server before following the call to the priesthood. At the time, no seminary in the United States would accept Tolton because he was Black. He attended seminary, and was ordained, in Rome at St. John Lateran Church. After ordination, he pastored a parish in Chicago, where his inspirational homilies drew Catholics from across the city, both Black and white. Sadly, he died as a young man from heat exhaustion. His holiness and devotion to Jesus serve as an example of serving our Lord completely. Please pray for the canonization cause of Venerable Augustus Tolton. www.BlackCatholicHistory.com #tolton #priesthood #saints #blackcatholichistorymonth #catholic

So y’all know the connection between St. John Lateran Archbasilica (who dedication feast day is celebrated today by the Church) and Ven. Augustus Tolton? St. John Lateran was the first Catholic Church dedicated by Constantine in the 4th century. It was the papal seat until the mid 1800’s, and holds primacy of place among Rome’s basilicas (No small feat!). It also was the location of Augustus Tolton’s ordination! No American seminary would admit or ordain the future saint, so he went to Rome for seminary and ordination. St. John Lateran was the perfect church for this holy man of God’s ordination. More later in the month on Tolton (we promise), but we couldn’t miss the opportunity to point out the greatness of God in times of adversity. When American Catholics said no, God made a way out of (what seemed like) no way…. Cause God don’t play y’all!

Appropriate as we head into #MothersDay weekend, the latest #CatholicMissourian highlights the faith and life of Martha Jane Chisley Tolton. You can read the full story at cathmo.com. "Many Catholics have heard of Martha Jane’s youngest son, Venerable Father Augustus Tolton, the nation’s first self-identified Black priest and one of six African Americans currently under consideration for a declaration of sainthood in the Catholic Church. . However, there would be no Fr. Tolton without the devout faithfulness, extraordinary courage and spiritual leadership of “Mother Tolton." ... While many narrations of Fr. Tolton’s fiercely contested journey into the Catholic Priesthood center on the few white nuns and priests who formally educated him, the surviving record is clear: Martha Jane was her son’s first and most dedicated champion. . Martha Jane not only nurtured and supported her son’s religious vocation, but also that of a young woman who eventually joined the historically Black Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore. ... Martha Jane lived with her son, assisted in his evangelization work, which brought over 600 Black people into the faith, and eventually served as the sacristan at St. Monica, the city’s first Black Catholic parish." ... Tolton: From Slave to Priest is a live theatrical one-man drama. The play is based on the life of Fr. Augustus Tolton, the first African American priest. It is a compelling true story of courage, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Tolton was born a slave on a Missouri farm in 1854. His mother risked everything to reach freedom with her three small children. They settled in the town of Quincy, Illinois. Tolton desired to become a Catholic priest, but every seminary in the United States rejected him. He persisted and was finally ordained in Rome. Then he began his ministry and worked tirelessly to serve people of all races, especially former slaves. Tolton died at age 43 when he collapsed from heat exhaustion in Chicago. The play will be held Saturday, May 14, 2022, at 2:00pm, at Holy Spirit Parish Center at 37588 Fremont Boulevard, Fremont, CA. $20/ticket. You know how sometimes you can have a perfectly uneventful, unexciting ride on a route you've done a million times before, in pretty mediocre weather, and yet somehow it still manages to feel like the best ride ever because you're just out hanging with your best mate, speaking the same language and they're doing their absolute best to give you what you are asking of them and it's just the best feeling in the world? Yeah, well, that 😊 This little horse is just such a wee cracker. #icelandichorse #horsesoficeland #horsesofinstagram #shetlandislands #tolton #myhappyplace #getoutside #twohearts

Join CTU's Augustus Tolton Pastoral Ministry Program on Monday, February 28 for our annual Tolton Lecture. This year, Dr. Nat Samuel will present a talk entitled, "Philoctete’s Wound: Black Caribbean Religious Art and the (Re)presentation of a Catholic Mysticism." Dr. Samuel expands the canon of sources for liberative theologies by examining the artwork of leading Caribbean muralist Sir Dunstan St. Omer. In conjunction with his close friend – Nobel Laureate Sir Derek Walcott – St. Omer pioneered a form of artistic expression which he used to great and imaginative effect as counter-narrative to dehumanizing colonial myth. Dr. Samuel will examine two of the artist’s best-known murals, discuss their significance in the arc of Caribbean religiosity, and extrapolate critical insight for a contemporary Black Catholic mysticism. Venerable Father Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) Father Tolton was a former slave raised as a Catholic. He was turned down numerous times during his quest to be a postulate, however, Father Peter McGirr would help him to study in Rome. He was ordained a priest in Rome in 1886 and would return to the United States to serve Black Catholics. Father Tolton was the first Black Roman Catholic Priest in the United States. He was granted the title "Venerable" in 2019. https://tolton.archchicago.org/ #Venerable  #FatherAugustusTolton  #AugustusTolton  #FatherTolton  #Tolton #BlackCatholics #BlackCatholicHistory  #BlackHistoryMonth  #StFrancisofAssisi  #StFrancisofAssisiChurch  #TheJosephites  #SaintJoseph  #DivineWord   #FratelliTutti  #BreauxBridge  #StMartinParish  #LouisianaCatholics  #ClosetheGivingGap  #PraytheRosary  #Adoration  #Mass  #CatholicInstagram #PrayforEachOther

🎥 Michael Porter Jr. Born To Play | A Basketball Documentary “Basketball for me is more than just a game, it’s something that I really love to do.” - MPJ Michael Porter Jr. is one of the more exciting young players in the NBA. When he arrived in the NBA he came with a lot of hype as he was ranked as one of the top prospects in the class of 2017. This documentary examines MPJ’s high school career and the hype that followed. MPJ attended Father Tolton Regional Catholic High School in Columbia, Missouri. In his junior season at Father Tolton, he led the team to the 2A State Championship. In the 2016 summer, MPJ joined Mokan Elite in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) averaging 26.2 pts and 11.5 rebs per game, leading them to the Nike EYBL Peach Jam championship and was named Co-MVP alongside teammate and future NBA player Trae Young. “He’s not high school good, like, he’s a pro!” - Coach Brandon Roy He then transferred to Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington, for his senior year. His Dad, Michael Porter Sr., was hired by the University of Washington to be an assistant coach. Fortunately, former NBA player Brandon Roy was the coach of Nathan Hale's basketball team, it was a match made in heaven. Coach Roy was a new coach and he needed a leader to build the team around. The team had a dismal 3-18 record the previous season and in MPJ, he had landed a star player, and a leader. In his senior season, MPJ averaged 36.2 pts and 13.6 rebs as he helped Nathan Hale to a perfect 29–0 record, winning the Washington Class 3A State Championship. After his heroics, MPJ was rated as a five-star recruit and ranked as one of the top overall recruits in his class by Rivals.com and ESPN. “Ever since I can remember, the NBA was my dream. I wanna be the best player to ever do this thing.” In 2018 he was drafted 14th overall by the Denver Nuggets but he wouldn’t make his official debut until October 31st 2019 due to injury. During the season in the bubble, he had a breakout season. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, earning himself a rookie max extension contract worth $172 million. I guess it's safe to say, the hype is surely real.
