All these tiny little bird prints, there are thousands of them, & I thought it made the prettiest little scene! I caught it before I added my footprints to the snow - which gave me something to ponder during my snow walk… All these steps we take, the animals take, all just trying to do the next right thing. Get out of bed, get food, get the kids from school, go to work, find the right materials for a nest, etc. We’re all connected, all going somewhere, even if we feel like we are stuck. And sometimes we are, sometimes you don’t know how you’re going to get through something. I can’t tell you how many times we have said over the past almost 2 years, “How are we going to do this?”. One foot in front of the other. That’s all you can do. And that is enough. I’ll tell you what I’ve learned the most - in walking this path & in my barefoot walks in the snow. The first step isn’t the hardest. It’s the steps after you get out of the snow that are. The steps that you take after you have been through your own tragedy. The steps you have to take to keep going after you have been through so much. Those are the hardest. And you don’t know where your steps will lead you - you just have to keep going & have faith. So be deliberate about your steps, about your path, about your presence. Are you looking down trying not to spill your spoon full of oil? Or are you noticing the blooms, the rocks, the way the light shines through the trees? Kids are constantly learning and continually messing up. It's just how they learn. It's how you learned, how I learned, and even how my kids learn. All four of my kids have ADHD. And let me tell you, they are a handful at times. All things have them distracted, and it is a challenge at times. When I started to meet them with grace, our home became more peaceful. When they spilled the milk, the response wasn't, "Why are you so clumsy? You need to be more careful. Clean up your mess." It changed to, "Oh no! That's okay. Let's clean up the mess." My kids started to be more aware of how they were acting and began to make the corrections themselves. Now, when the milk is too full, the youngest still asks for help so she doesn't have a mess to clean up. I don't always respond gracefully. I still yell from time to time, but I apologize when I mess up—just like I want them to apologize to me. Every now and then we can find ourselves in a place of focusing too much on outward circumstances to be the thing that fulfills us, that brings us joy, which keeps us trapped and powerless. Yes, your environment is key to creating a joyful and aligned life, however when we focus on "'I'll be happy when...., I'll find joy once...xyz' " - we are in danger. A lot of the joy we feel is a mindset, it is us CHOOSING a different perspective of the same situation and then choosing to take action on what we desire. If things aren't as you hope for right now, ask yourself where is the greatest resistance? Where are your fears? What would feel like stepping outside your comfort zone? Focus on those elements and then take action toward them, create a plan, and see your current situation as a stepping stone, as a catalyst for positive change that your soul has been asking for. When we are in a place that we don't like or feel burdened by we know what our job is, it is to create a plan of action internally through our true values and desires, as well as letting go what doesn't serve us and walking through those fears. That is our job, to create the life that feels exciting and joyful. When we depend on outward circumstances to be the reason we feel joy, we are giving away our power. Feeling like you have control over what happens in your work day (aka, autonomy) is one of the biggest predictors of satisfaction (and success!) at work. If you don't feel like you have much control at work, check in with yourself to see if you're unwittingly giving away your power in these five ways: 1. You volunteer for or accept unpaid work. This could be in the form of office party planning or heading up unpaid internal committees, but the bottom line is that if you are not being compensated or given sufficient additional time/bandwidth to perform these tasks, accepting this type of work will undermine your success--not accelerate it. 2. Your boundaries are permeable. When you set and KEEP your boundaries as sacred, you keep your power and demonstrate respect for yourself. Others will follow suit. 3. Your schedule dictates your life. If you attend every meeting or social engagement you're invited to, you feel powerless over your schedule. Politely decline meetings you're not critical to, and if you don't want to go to a social engagement, a "so sorry I can't make it this time!" goes a long way. 4. You're a slave to your inbox. Constantly monitoring your email inbox is taking away your ability to deeply focus. Pause incoming messages or only check it 1-2 times per day, and watch your productivity--and sense of control--skyrocket! 5. You say "yes" more than you say "no." Saying "yes" as a default will leave less space in your schedule/life for the JUICY yeses. Saying "no" opens up that space, and gives you power over your own time.
