De blauwe moskee 🕌 Een bezoek aan de blauwe moskee (Sultan Ahmed Moskee) mag je niet missen wanneer je in Istanbul bent. We hebben genoten van deze mooie grote imposante moskee, en van binnen is hij echt nog mooier! Eerst spelen we nog even tikkertje zodat de nodige energie eruit is, want in een moskee moet je stil zijn en dat is soms best een uitdaging voor de jongens. Schoenen uit, hoofddoek om en een lange broek aan! We zien de mannen voorin de moskee bidden, de vrouwen zitten achterin. Eenmaal buiten klinkt het gebed en gezang van de muezzin, en ook vanuit de verschillende moskeeën in de omgeving horen we de oproep tot gebed. Indrukwekkend en hard ook. Het lijkt wel een wedstrijd! It’s a long quote… but meaty! This has been a regular topic of conversation of late. Sailing is a niche culture, just like RV’ing, motorbikes, Disney Vacation Club and so many others. As a sailing couple we have chosen a lifestyle that is full of wonder and challenges. The highest of highs and yes the lowest of lows. It’s that eternal ying and yang pull. Sailing friendships can be established quickly. “Your people” are easy to spot. You just CLICK! Those friendships are fortified over shared encounters, shared sailing tales… and drinks! Do NOT forget the drinks! We were siting with some new friends last night talking about the comfort of traveling in a pack on long passages. It doesn’t mean you have to travel the exact same path or at the same speed, it just means that someone else is out there within earshot on the VHF radio who knows your travel plan, is aware if you don’t show and would help in a time of need. Sometimes that voice on the radio is just checking on you to see if you are ok, to warn you of pangas ahead (small fishing boats), fish traps, whales, telling you to look up for the rainbow or to check out the southern cross in the night sky. Sometimes, it is to tell you a joke while on that 3am night watch. Friendships forged on saltwater and with shared dreams. My absolute favorite thing about freelancing? The freedom to do things that bring me joy. Things like traveling. Things like setting my own schedule. And increasingly, spending more time with family! My older brother came to visit me in Ecuador in late 2021 and it was incredible to be able to show him around the country I lived in for so long (I rode out the pandemic in Quito)… My brother and I haven’t been particularly close over the years. I’m one of 7 kids and moved away from Ohio soon after I graduated college. We just sorta went separate ways and got caught up living separate lives. We hadn’t spent a week together since we were teenagers!! Without freelancing I never would’ve had the ability to take a week off work no stress and enjoy his visit. To be able to just move my schedule around and drop everything to go touristing for the week. To not worry about money be able to say, “You came all the way here, this is all my treat!” It was particularly special because we were each going through rough patches in our lives. So to be able to reconnect, to get to know each other as grownups, to talk and share our experiences with each other, and on top of that to be able to show him a country I love… it was really special. And you know I bent his ear about picking up some freelancing work on the side so he can come visit me all over the world more often! 🤣 I’m telling you… I preach the gospel of freelance to everyone. The polar plunge! As soon as I saw this on YouTube pre-trip I knew I had to do it. Unfortunately, when the time came I was exhausted. It was right after the crazy night spent camping in Antarctica (photos on that coming soon!). There’d just been time to come back, have breakfast, and fall into an actual bed for about 2 hours. But in Antarctica you’ve got to be ready for things to happen when they happen. There is no set schedule and flexibility is the key work you’ll hear daily. We were supposed to have a morning expedition but the weather wasn’t allowing us to make a landing. So the crew readied themselves for the plunge… When the weather is too crazy to actually reach land why not jump in the water eh? I groaned at the announcement as it woke me up, knowing I wanted to do it but knowing there went my sleep for the day. Having done some cold water wild swimming in the early mornings in England over the summer I knew that the rush is like no other, waking you up from your inside out. Once over that initial groaning and getting out of bed though all was well. There were party vibes below decks as the crew got us excited for the icy plunge and with a shot of vodka after and an immediate trip to the sauna it was so much fun. I’d have done it each day on board to be honest! Biggest surprise… the water wasn’t THAT cold considering you’re in and out. I believe a crew member mentioned -1C. Urriðavatn lake in Iceland felt colder when I took a dip there one year in October so I was expecting that level of frigid here as well. Safety is a very important priority for the polar plunges. The crew set up a tether around you in case of you not being able to get yourself back to the landing. There’s also a zodiac and the ship’s medical staff at the ready in case of any issues. I heard a lot of mixed opinions on whether this was safe or healthy or not but as in most things, I think it is better left up to each person to decide. Several people who didn’t want to do it stayed strong and didn’t let themselves be peer pressured into doing it when they didn’t feel comfortable for whatever personal/health reasons and I thought that was very positive.

Vysoké hory s ledovci, kolmé kilometrové skalní stěny a hluboká zelená údolí tu nabízí nepřeberné možnosti pro horolezce a příznivce bigwallového lezení. 🏞 My si tyhle skalní stěny prohlídnem hezky zespodu během 120 kilometrů dlouhého treku mezi pětitisícovými skalními velikány. ☃️ Je mínus pětadvacet, rozbalujem stany a snažíme se z kartuší dostat plyn pro uvaření čaje a večeře. 6 lidí ze skupiny podlehlo pokušení a vydalo se nocovat do nedalekýho baráku. To ale neni vůbec dobrodružství! 💪 Zachumlávám se teda do spacáku, nandavám péřový papuče a balim foťák s termoskou do bundy. Teplo mě dneska asi nečeká. World mental health day 💙 Today is a day I hold very dearly ❤️ If you have the time, please read! 10th of October each year we acknowledge that mental health issues are a real deal. For some, it's a word easily thrown around. For me, it's something that almost consumed me during my teenage years, for some this will come as a surprise and it might be very hard to imagine when you look at my smiling face nowadays. Depression isn't always visible, and it's not something one can just shrug off. It's hard work, it's painful & the scariest part is not when you're in it, but on your way out of it. When you have no idea who you are without the pain, without the darkness. Now, we all have darkness within us, that I'm positive off. But I like to think that I'm more light than dark these days and I'm always finding new ways to improve myself & my mental health 💙 Today it feels like a memory that's faded enough that I sometimes believe it was only a bad dream, but I'll forever wear the scars that tell me otherwise, and that's okay. Ps. If you're currently struggling, I want you to know that you're not alone. Sending out all my love to those who still struggles today, your fight is valid and I see you 💙 #mentalhealthawareness

Možná si vylezeš svojí první čtyřtisícovku. Možná zkusíš, jak se žije v poušti. Vykoupeš se pod vodopádem? Zažiješ tuhou severskou zimu? 🧐 Na spoustě cest se něco pokazí, co úplně změní průběh akce. A právě tyhle nenadálé změny mají často za následek super zážitky, které překonají to, co týdny dopředu plánuješ a na co se těšíš. A právě tohle je důvod, proč tě chci pozvat na tuhle akci - nemusíš totiž plánovat vůbec nic.
