I visited Cape Charles this past weekend with my kids and my goodness, it’s the cutest little beach town! It’s been on my travel list for years and I’m so glad I finally checked it out. James Monroe’s Highland is less than a 10-minute drive from Monticello. We decided to visit after Monticello because… well, why not? It is so close! I admit I knew little to nothing about James Monroe before this visit. I had no idea he was a soldier, governor, and international diplomat before serving as the 5th president of the United States. It was easy to walk up and buy a ticket on the day of our visit. However, tickets are $1 cheaper if you buy them online. If we had more time, I would have liked to hike one or two trails. There are 4 trails: three are easy, and one is moderate due to steep inclines. Did you know the oldest definitive depiction of astronomical phenomena was discovered in Germany? 🇩🇪🌙 The beautiful bronze Nebra Sky Disc, or “Himmelsscheibe von Nebra”, was discovered in 1999 in the Ziegelroda Forest, around 37 miles west of Leipzig. The Ziegelroda Forest was occupied in the Neolithic era and attributed to Bronze Age culture, dated by archaeologists to c. 1800–1600 BCE. Familiar older earthworks depicting the yearly course of the sun, such as Stonehenge, display early astronomical observations in early settlements. The Nebra disc, 12 inches diameter and weighing 4.9 pounds, is the first example of this type of astronomical knowledge in portable form! The symbols on the disc are interpreted as the Sun or full moon, a lunar crescent, and stars - the cluster of seven stars, representing the Pleiades. The angle between the solstices can be viewed through the two golden arcs. At the top of this roller coaster, I screamed, “no! Nononononononono! About 35x in rapid succession and Lily grabbed my hand and said, “it’ll be ok mom!” In my defense, rollercoasters are not my thing and I was riding this for the kids… but talk about a humbling role reversal 🤣❤️🥹 6. Only spent $80 to learn how impossible it is to win fair prizes… and left even more determined. Awesome. So nothing learned. We’ll probably do it again 😎 7. These swings were scarier than I thought they’d be! Overall great success ❤️

If you're looking for a place to stay overnight in historic @downtownfredericksburg this centrally located @airbnb is perfect! There are two bedrooms, but (if you have a middle schooler who snores 🙋🏼♀️🥴) the living room sofa downstairs can be converted to a bed, and there are three full bathrooms. This reasonably-priced, well-appointed home has an easy-to-use security system, a beautiful outdoor space, and the host, Carley, was very responsive. When I asked if the trains ran overnight (or more to the point, if they blew their horns overnight 🥴🤣), she personally brought two white noise machines for us to use. (I'm a country mouse who lives on a farm with no noise! 🥴😆). I loved that the primary bedroom had a huge en-suite bathroom and a massive walk-in shower with two shower heads, and the kiddos loved the massive bean bag in the second bedroom. Osan Japanese Restaurant, just across the street from the Fredericksburg Visitors Center, was nothing short of incredible! There is no kids' menu per se, but the Yakitori is basically grilled chicken on a stick with teriyaki sauce (that my kids were trying - unsuccessfully- to alternatively eat off the plate with a fork 🍴or chopsticks 🥢🤣). I highly recommend the family-friendly Downtown Trolley Tour by Trolley Tours of Fredericksburg. Even though it's a little chilly today, we asked the driver to open the windows so we could take pictures.
