With outdoor tech getting lighter and lighter, electronic items are finding their way onto more and more kit lists. Their additional (light) weight often is considered insignificant given the benefit they bring. Therefore, you may have noticed some solar power banks on this year's TGO Kit List! Team member Chris recently ran the @silvaglobal Moors Traverse, an 80km section of the 2024 Silva Northern Traverse, with a top 5 finish 👏 This running event follows Wainwright's 300 km Coast to Coast route beginning in St Bees, covering three National Parks in the north of England before finishing in Robin Hoods Bay, completed over 5 days. Running simultaneously are three single-day events, one for each national park; The Lakes, Dales and Moors Traverse. Chris went armed with kit from Silva to give it a thorough try-out, including running vest, head torch and running poles. I decided to go light weight for the latest trip to Dartmoor bagging all 52 tors over 500m over 63 bog slogging miles. The tent was ditched in favour of a Tarp, the sleeping bag replaced with a @thermarest Vesper quilt, the campermat a @thermarest NeoAir xlite and the pillow @seatosummituk Aeros ultralight available from @valleyandpeakuk No stove for this trip! I think this was potentially the lightest set up I’ve hiked with but needs were a must! Having said that I’m still debating if ditching the stove and ready prepared dehydrated meals was the way forward. The amount of nuts, sweets, energy bars i carried stacked up. Convenient and quick to eat on the move! I was knackered at the end of each day so i think cooking was out and I played it right??-thoughts… Thanks to all who have dropped a little donation into the @dartmoorpreservation #savedartmoor crowd funder. Slight change to my kit for the Robin Hood Way on Monday. I've decided to go stoveless. I've had a closer look at the trail route, and there's going to be ample places to stock up on food. I can't justify taking a stove for this one. I'm taking 3,000kcals per day for two days as I plan to hopefully do it in less than 3 days. I can just supplement my calories if needed at a cafe or shop. Plus, I'd rather spend the time hiking than having to stop for lunch and boil water for a meal, and it will also lighten my pack a little.

I've used Oakleys for many years. They have always been my go-to pair of sunglasses. After losing a pair on the South Downs Way, I've been in search of a pair of sunglasses for hiking, thru-hiking, and everything in between. @ultralightoutdoorgear approached me asking if I'd be interested in trying the @ombraz sunglasses out. I was aware of the sunglasses after watching Darwin on the Trail, and JupiterHikes wear them over in the US. Two guys I have huge admiration for in the ultralight backpacking world. Two thru-hikers at the top of their game. Of course, the answer was yes!! These sunnies are unique to your more regular sunglasses. They are armless sunglasses that use built-in, V2 Japanese nylon cord made from recycled fishing nets, which are also anti-microbial. The cord is tightened by two toggles until the sunglasses fit snuggly on your face. They come with a lifetime warranty on the frames and cord which is always a good thing with sunglasses. They are insanely comfortable, secure, and ultra lightweight. Weighing in at 23g. The sunglasses don't fall down your nose, don't fall off your head and won't break if you accidentally sit on them. Obviously, I'll need to test them out fully this summer. I've reviewed and tested a lot of gear over the years, and I've always found negatives with products. Low supply warning for the Kakwa 55 in Ultra 200X. The interest in these packs has really surprised us, as our main batch of “2024” packs that went on sale in October ended up selling out before 2024 even started. We added a larger production run that arrives shortly but is on track to sell out in some sizes before it’s here. The medium packs are going to sell out shortly (e.g. today) while the S and L sizes will sell out in a few weeks. I think the reason the Kakwa packs are resonating with a lot of people is that they incorporate better comfort and support than typically found in a UL pack, yet the weight is still really light at sub-2 lbs. The Kakwa packs have an inverted U frame, load lifters, S shaped shoulder straps, and a dual strap/reverse pull hipbelt with 2:1 leverage. Aside from load carrying features that are rare in this weight class, the Kakwa also is very durable with Ultra 200X fabric, non-stretch meshes, and protected elastics, plus comes fully loaded with shoulder strap pockets, hipbelt pockets, unique side zippered pocket and more. We're delighted to be stocking the new MSR Hubba Hubba 1 and 2 person Bikepacking tents! The main characteristics of bikepacking tents are the pole length and portability by bike. These have 29cm ‘short’ poles that can fit between narrower drop/flared handlebars or fit into panniers or a frame bag. The inner and outer tent comes in a roll top, waterproof bag with a separate pole bag (that attaches to the outside of the main bag). The bag is fixed to the handlebars with 2 soft rubber stoppers that are tightened and secured with webbing and clips. One small but highly effective cord wraps around the headtube and stops the bag from swaying even over rough ground. These nifty features paired with the usual high quality of MSR tents make these new Bikepacking models very enticing. Back in September 2022, our COO Dan Pearson set off to hike the GR221, a 140km (87 mile) long-distance trail through northwestern Mallorca. The planned route was over 8 days, staying in refuges and hostels. Dan's Trip Report makes a great read, and importantly covers his experience of heatstroke on Day 6, resulting in rescue.
