The Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum’s new board president Maria Stats is brimming with ideas on how to help the museum thrive. She’s emphasizing strong ties with community organizations and activating Vallejo’s youth, both as visitors and volunteers. Stats is also co-founder of On the Fringe Visual and Performing Arts, where for the last nine years she has sought to provide education in theater to Vallejo students and put on plays for adults that highlight marginalized or underrepresented people. On the Fringe has long used the museum as a venue, and now Stats has stepped down from the theater board to focus on her new role. She joins the museum as it faces several challenges, including leadership turnover and building maintenance issues. But she’s used to conquering hurdles. Protesters lined the sidewalk near California Forever’s Vallejo office during last week’s Second Friday Art Walk, tabling with art, signs, leaflets and zines describing their objections to the company’s proposal for a new city in Solano County open space and farmland. The “Women’s History Month Artist Showcase” sponsored by California Forever was intended to feature a fashion show, three live musicians, artwork by four women artists, and food by four local food producers. An estimated 15 to 20 protesters, young and old, from both Vallejo and remote parts of Solano County, stationed themselves nearby to talk to Art Walk patrons. They distributed information from the Coalition of Artists Against Billionaires, Solano Together, the Sierra Club Redwood Chapter and the Greenbelt Alliance. They painted a large “Stop Tech City” banner and used a cardboard stencil to write the same words in chalk on the sidewalk in several places. “I wouldn’t even call it a protest,” said Aiden Maywood, a founding member of the group Solano Together. “It was more of a “taking back” of Art Walk and countering the politicization of it by California Forever.” He estimated that they spoke to between 200 to 300 community members during the event. Sean MacCracken, a Vallejo resident who had a table at the protest, said that a lot of community members from across diverse social and political lines came together, not to antagonize artists or community members, but to tell the other side of the story. “I would call it a celebration, the attitude was really one of jubilation,” he said. California Forever – the company that has been buying up land in rural Solano County with the intention of building a new city – announced in February that it would open its offices in downtown Vallejo for an artist showcase during the city’s 100th second Friday Art Walk. It invited the public to stop by to “learn more about our project and our support for the local arts community. There will be music, local art installations and food!” During the next Art Walk this week, the company plans to hold a Women's Artist Showcase. California Forever’s involvement in Art Walk is being received by the community with a mixture of surprise, joy, confusion and protest. Some welcome the support and infusion of money into the local arts scene. Others accuse the company of “artwashing” and of manipulating the community to support their project. Art Walk has been a fixture of Vallejo’s downtown since 2014. Local artists and crafters display their wares on Vallejo's downtown sidewalks, as restaurants, shops and galleries stay open late. Musicians and performance artists contribute to the ambiance. Art Walk’s grassroots approach to revitalizing Vallejo’s downtown would seem to be an odd fit for California Forever, a group of Silicon Valley investors that plans to build a new city on agricultural land and open space between Travis Air Force Base and Rio Vista. But their first step is to get an initiative on the November ballot to lift the land use restrictions of Solano County’s Orderly Growth Initiative, so the group is looking to make inroads in the community. In a ground floor shop just below the Legacy at Sonoma apartments in downtown Vallejo, shelves overflow with art supplies in a riot of color, surrounding the large work tables in the center of the room. Need to patch those jeans but don’t have the right fabric? Interested in taking up crochet? Perhaps you want to get into painting, but don’t have the funds to invest in canvas, paint and brushes – @creativereuseofvallejo, located at 531 Capitol St. is the place to go. Kristin Woods opened the nonprofit Creative Reuse of Vallejo in September 2022 to provide low cost art supplies, a workspace, and make creativity more accessible to the people of Vallejo. She said there’s no need to go out and buy a glue gun, card stock and a set of colored pencils when you want to make one greeting card. Creative Reuse of Vallejo has it all. Woods was inspired by the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse in Oakland, which opened in 1979 to provide space for artists, educators and community members to receive low cost supplies while making their lives simpler and more sustainable. Woods said her goal is to provide a place for people to be creative and share things. She’s planning on offering more free workshops and holding future events like an ugly sweater making workshop and an upcycle fashion show.
