Arizona Wild Horse Pen & Ink on Antique Map The Art of Dan Abernathy In 1971, Congress enacted the Wild Horse Act out of concern that wild horses were disappearing from the American scene. Declaring, wild horses are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West and contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people. This Act for the free roaming horses became known as the Wild Horse Annie Act. Wild horses are integral to the landscape. They are the living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West and have more right to freely roam the high desert than domesticated livestock. Today, all wild horses need human help to survive. As people made more and more demands on the land for livestock and human use, their numbers dwindled. The wild horse population dropped from about two million in 1900, to under 30,000 that remain on public land today. I have combined antique maps that are over 100 year old with my version of stippling into my own creative perspectives. The background for this drawing of a wild horse looking back at you, is on an original map of Arizona, published in 1882 for a Rand McNally Atlas. It is framed with patinaed copper and measures approximately 21 X 30 inches. This piece is available for purchase. An oldie but a goodie, this graphite and Nero pencil drawing has just found a new home with a valued collector through Sanders Galleries in Tucson. I was very fortunate to observe these Groove-Billed Anis in Cabo Pulmo Mexico several years back. With their chunky, parrot-like beaks, long tails, and iridescent black plumage, they are truly weird and wonderful, my favorite combination. I received quite a nice surprise in my Art of the West newsletter yesterday. It contains a splendid promotion article covering the upcoming National Sculpture Society’s 91st Annual Exhibition, which renewed some happy memories for me.  AOTW’s newsletter/article shares three photographs - one of which includes a splendid image of me at the NSS show in 2022, discussing my sculpture, "Visions of Farewell" with a group of attendees at that year’s Closing Ceremonies. (I've also included two closeups of the event that my wife took as well, on the following page) In truth, this article & image encapsulate a wonderful crossing of paths between 3 groups of people that have uniquely played a powerful role in my artistic trajectory. Certainly the National Sculpture Society has been a pivotal organization for me to belong to since my return from Japan. Further, the NSS Annual Awards Exhibitions have led me to The Brookgreen Gardens - the venue at which my name was truly first connected with my work.  My various sculptures have been on display 6 times at Brookgreen prior to this year. Further, The Brookgreen Gardens subsequently honored me with the chance to create the 50th Brookgreen Medal.  Finally, Art of the West Magazine, granted me my first formal Artist Feature Article in their Nov.- Dec. 2022 issue called, “Poignant Moments” - a beautiful 6 page piece, featuring 8 different works written by Mr. Brandon Rosas.   In any case - the coalescence of these various parties all in one unexpectedly splendid newsletter/ promotional announcement made me smile and seemed well-worth sharing. Thank you, National Sculpture Society! Thank you, Brookgreen Gardens! Thank you, Art of the West! Few desert birds are as iconic or charismatic as the Greater Roadrunner. Far removed from the silly-looking cartoon that kept outsmarting the diligent but dim-witted Willie Coyote throughout my childhood, these tough birds are fierce predators. Seeing them hunt about the desert scrub for lizards is a bit like watching the velociraptors from Jurassic Park stalking their prey. I'm very pleased to say that this one is already SOLD. Pre-Selling these cards as they go to press Single cards are $6.00 and a box of 6 of the same card, $26.00 The Wyoming Cutt-Slam The Cut-Slam drawings were born out of the love of being on the waters of Wyoming with a fly rod fishing for native trout. With the hours spent with my ink pen, I’m not only paying tribute to Wyoming fisheries, I am also honoring Ron Remmick, the “Father of the Cutt-Slam.” With Ron being the father of the Cutt-Slam, Pinedale, Wyoming is its birthplace. Ron Remmick was a fisheries biologist for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department in Pinedale, Wyoming from 1978 to 2002, when his service was cut short by cancer. He was a passionate advocate for Cutthroat Trout. Ron’s legacy is the “Cutt-Slam, a 1996 brainchild he developed to, “encourage anglers to learn about Wyoming’s cutthroat trout and develop an appreciation for the habitat needs and management programs necessary to maintain these species.” The Cutt-Slam Series was created with my version of pen & ink stippling. One of the animals I immediately fell in love with upon exploring the Sonoran Desert is our native Desert Tortoise. I've been privileged to see them in the wild on a few occasions, but this fellow is an over 30-year-old specimen that lives in my neighbor's garden. Tortoises hibernate for much of the year, and even when they are active they can be very hard to see due to their great camouflage, hence this particular tortoise's name, Waldo. I get asked to donate to many foundations every year.. And I wish, more than anything, that I could contribute to every single one of them.🙏🏻❤️However, I AM proud to say that I’ve been able to contribute to this very special one for the past few years, as it hits close to home for me in many ways.🔥 The Wildland Firefighter Foundation supports a great cause, & is full of wonderful people who are making a big impact on the lives of many. ✨ Living in Montana most of my life, I’ve seen the devastation caused by wildfires firsthand, unfortunately. My family has had to do emergency evacuations & has been displaced for weeks in past years.. & (along with so many others) has had to worry about these disasters every single fire season (which has very much become a “season” for us in the West). It is a real, ongoing fear for me, & I am so deeply grateful for all of these brave men & women who risk their lives to protect us all.👨‍🚒 And although it is only an annual “season” for most of us, it impacts many of these people & their families forever. 💔 THANK YOU to all of our brave & resilient firefighters, to their families who often endure much more than we know, & to this wonderful organization for ALL that you do. 🙏🏻❤️ @flatheadwff This was a fun (& eye-opening) evening, & I look forward to returning again next year! Sable and Baobab by @bradbestelink.art.film Two Okavango icons. Sable antelope are associated with Baobab Trees due to their adaptation to semi-arid landscapes where Baobabs thrive. The Sable is one of the iconic species in the Kalahari-Okavango system, with its striking long curved horns and dark coat. They are symbols of adaption and resilience to due to their ability to survive in their habitat near the fringes of the Kalahari desert, where water and vegetation is the most sparse. In this fragile ecosystem they play a crucial role in maintaining the balance and structure of the landscape and distribution of predators. There are intensive conservation efforts to protect their populations and habitat due to the sables interconnectedness and role they play in the health of arid ecosystems. As the heat reaches its peak in summer, the Okavango Delta holds its breath in anticipation of the summer rains. Its vast expanse of sky becomes an epic visual stage for the buildup of dramatic storm clouds horizon to horizon. Nestled within the Kalahari, the Okavango Delta depends on these dramatic summer rainfalls for its very existence. The annual rainfall not only quenches the thirst of the land but also sets in motion its cycle of renewal. As the rains come, the dry landscape transforms into an oasis, allowing wildlife to roam more freely in search of sustenance beyond the confines of its waterways. In this land of contrasts, summer heralds the arrival of the thunderstorms, which is @bradbestelink.art.film favourite season. They have been lost in the romantic vision of the West and have become the unseen ones. Each year, millions of burros and donkeys are being slaughtered for the production of ejiao, a medicinal gelatin that is made from boiling the skins of the animals. The burro and donkey skin trade is now decimating the global populace. Donkey-hide glue is a key ingredient in traditional Chinese remedies. It is derived from the gelatin found in burro and donkey hides. Perhaps no animal has given as much to humans as the gentle burro and donkey. As packers and all-around great companions, their light footprint and capacity for giving is unsurpassed. Burros and donkeys contributed to the opening of the West. They deserve our respect and to have a home on the range. This piece is available for purchase. da’ donkeys Pen & Ink on Panel This Pen & Ink drawing is on cold pressed watercolor paper using my version of stippling. The watercolor paper is adhered to a wooden panel then coated with archival beeswax. This contemporary finish protects the art while elevating the traditional glass covering.
