I have the luxury of looking away - while every single one of the millions of pigs in this disgusting killing and torture machine does not, forced to live this misery every second, without respite or hope. This face is why every single day I work for these animals, so that they may be freed from this life of torture and abuse. And every time the industries that profit off their innocent backs suffer a blow, I rejoice. The behemoth known as Tyson has closed one of their “pork processing plants” aka pig torture chambers in Iowa. Most of the news articles are focusing on the 1,200 workers being laid off. Look, when you’re making your living off of torturing animals, it’s time to find a new job. There’s always a way. And more of these job losses are going to keep coming so the people in these industries need to see the big, red writing on the wall. MAKE A PLAN TO GET OUT! Tyson has cited falling demand for its products as one of the reasons they are closing this place down. HELL YES and HALLELUJAH. The word is getting out about the death and disease surrounding flesh-eating. Keep exposing the brutality! Keep putting pressure on these industries. Keep shutting them the eff down!!! On April 22, 1970 Earth Day began as a protest inspiring 20 million Americans — at the time, 10% of the total population of the United States — to take to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate against the impacts of 150 years of industrial development which had left a growing legacy of serious human health impacts. (earthday.org) Today in 2024 on Earth Day we are filled with marketing and ads of greenwashing with so-called “natural” products by large companies who don’t give a shit about the world around them. They get rich and more powerful by continuing to exploit their workers by placing them in unsafe conditions and paying them unfair wages while simultaneously exploiting all of us through our dependency on getting things fast and shipped for free… and let’s not forget that these products are also often made with unsafe materials (fossil fuels and carcinogenic ingredients) that exploit and cause massive harm to the people who are in direct contact with run off from factories (which are disproportionately placed in communities of color - this is called environmental racism), and simultaneously wreak havoc on animals and the planet. I remember watching FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992) as a child and thinking why would anyone cut down a tree?? Why would humans cut down trees?? Our rainforests throughout the world are being destroyed due to unsustainable farming practices, biodiversity loss, and climate change (which is all at the fault of human hands). Rainforests used to cover 14% of the Earth’s landmass today roughly 6%… at the pace we are going, our remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. The UN estimates that over 100,000 acres of rainforests are destroyed each day - visually that’s close to 100,000 football fields. Big companies aren’t going to make changes any time soon - so it’s up to us as consumers. We must demand change by spending our dollars elsewhere whenever we can. And tell them why you are choosing to do so, tell your lawmakers too - after all they’rw often getting $$$ from said companies so it’s in their interests to listen… (Continued in comments)

Well that’s a wrap on 2023!!! ⚡️ THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for supporting the shop this year! It was a big year for us in the new shop for our first full calendar year, and this community supported every change along the way including a full renovation of our bulk refillery and lots of new additions because of our incredible new shelving and storage thanks to @honeyscustomhomeservices 🤍 This year also brought internal growth of the shop - hiring my first part time payroll team member who I know y’all agree when I say has been a HUGE asset!!! Our TRICK OR TRASH box was a little delayed in shipment, but it has arrived!!!🎃 Did you know that research shows that in the US alone, more than 600 million pounds of candy are purchased each year for Halloween AND the majority of those candy wrappers end up in landfills due to an inability by most curbside recycling programs to recycle them…. yeah, bad huh. But we have some good news for you this year because we are able to help y’all do something about it!!!! ♻️ The shop is participating in Trick or Trash again this year through our @rubicon box so that you don’t have to trash those candy wrappers and doom them to an eternity in a landfill—or, even worse, in our oceans. FOUR YEARS AGO… I flipped the open sign over for the very first time and y’all were patiently waiting outside ready to support the shop and then kept rolling in soo deep that there was a line out the door. I still remember how nervous I was in this exact moment, my hands were shaking uncontrollably for at least the first hour of opening because this was the biggest moment of my life - trusting that Des Moines needed a little sustainable shop with vegan low-waste goods. And damn I was right because here we are FOUR YEARS later in a new shop with more goods including an exponentially larger bulk refillery!!!! We did this together!!!!! This community has continuously showed up through sooo much over the past four years - the uncertain times of 2020 … launching a website in days, doorside shopping, 3 guests in the shop at a time, remember that?!? And then we transitioned again as the shop closed for nearly a month to move into where we are now and then through heartache when I said goodbye to Sophie who we all loved dearly… y’all seriously have been there through it all and have changed my life in soo many ways - you’ve become a part of my family and the joy that you give me when you happily walk into the door smiling for the first time (or the 100th time) will forever hold a special place in my heart and I know it is said a lot, but THANK YOU!!!!! The shop exists because of YOU!!! I hope that when you look at where your life was four years ago to today you see your sustainability and the impact your choices have made in your home! We are all only one person making one decision at a time, but look at how that one decision has multiplied over the course of four years. That is the power of change and no matter how small our changes are they make a difference!!! We’ve got lots of fun things happening this weekend starting with today so make a plan to come through today, tomorrow, Sunday or hell come by every day because we have special guests joining us as well!!
