Had some questions on the weekend about how I’m controlling the new PS1 as a CD player without a game controller. And here’s how: a PS2 DVD/Playstation remote with IR module. At first I thought all I could do was control play and pause/stop, but messing around I’ve found I can skip tracks ahead with the R1 button, backward with the L1 button, and fast forward with R2. Was pretty ecstatic when #VenusRecords started releasing double-record sets of some of their previously hard-to-find catalogue last year. Snagged Speak Low immediately, and just put an order in for #TsuyoshiYamamoto’s “Live At Jazz Is” set, which came out as two single albums in 2020 (Misty and Look Of Love) and will now be a single, two-disker called Misty. This will be his 3rd or 4th “Misty” record, named for both the club where he got his start, and his signature tune. Starting the day with this terrific recording by Russell Malone. Malone is a little younger than Frisell or Scofield but older than Lage, for example. And a terrific player. He falls a little closer to the tradition of Wes or Grant Green than do those players. But as he shows here he can play straight out bop and move inside and out with the best of em. I’ve seen Malone a few times and always enjoyed his playing. Special mention to his solos on the title track here.
