Alpha Juno [1985] The Roland Alpha Juno series, launched in late 1985, consists of two models: the Alpha Juno 1 and Alpha Juno 2. Both share the same sound engine but the Alpha Juno 2 offers extra performance features.The Alpha Junos were a departure from their predecessor, the Roland Juno-106, as they replaced the dedicated controls with soft touch buttons and a single dial for programming sounds. During this era, Roland, along with other synthesizer manufacturers, began adopting the more minimalist interface approach that Yamaha’s successful designs popularized, moving away from the hands-on, tweakable front panel controls. The Alpha Juno exemplified this trend, eschewing panel controls in favor of a streamlined design featuring DX-style membrane buttons and the ‘Alpha Dial.’ This dial was central to navigating and adjusting a wide array of sound parameters, including DCO, LFO, pitch bend, envelope controls, pulse width, waveforms, noise generation, pulse width modulation, high pass filtering, the versatile VCF (with controls for frequency, envelope, resonance, LFO modulation, and keyboard tracking), VCA envelope shaping, and chorus effects. These synths feature a multi-stage envelope design that include eight parameters, encompassing four timing settings, three levels, and a key follow function. A Yamaha DX7-style envelope chart is prominently displayed on the right-hand side of its control panel, which helps guide users through the complex envelope stages For those desiring more immediate control over these parameters, Roland offered the option of an external programmer, the PG-300, which provided direct access to each parameter through a dedicated slider or switch, enhancing the user’s ability to shape sounds on the fly. The Alpha Juno series was offered in two models: the four-octave Juno 1 and the five-octave Juno 2, which featured pressure and velocity sensitivity and included a cartridge slot for patch storage. One of the factory presets, nicknamed ‘hoover sound’, became a staple in jungle and rave music. Just arrived! A £142 find on eBay. Only seen the 101 model in the flesh before. The 3000 is a heavy beast. I feel like I am pretty able to program it straight after plugging it in. Im super excited to dig into this thing. This is the first time i ever owned a hardware instrument based on phase distortion synthesis. I am also tempted to make a YouTube series on vintage synths under £200 that seem to have had less hype than others. Most of them are anonymous boring looking things with a distinct lack of sliders and knobs.
