Happy #FreedomDay 🇿🇦 x30 Today is Freedom Day in South Africa. It marks the first post-apartheid elections held in 1994 and the day on which the new constitution was introduced. The elections were the first national elections where everyone of voting age of over 18 from any race group was allowed to vote. The day reminds of the immeasurable sacrifices made by individuals and nations to break away from the chains of segregation. It reminds them of the efforts of their national heroes, particularly Nelson Mandela. He is regarded as a champion of freedom, not just in SA but the entire world. I was 12 when I first saw Mandela with QEII on the Mall in London on his state visit in 1996 (How lucky!) and was always in awe of him. When life was difficult, I thought, it's nothing compared to what he went through and I got on with it. Of course nothing was even close to what he went through. It also shows how times, no matter how horrible, can change when it seems so unlikely. Last December I was so lucky not only to go to SA but with thanks to @satopiatravel and @virginunite to get to meet many of the people around Mandela and learn from them, freedom fighters #AntoinetteSithole and #SethMazibuko both had me crying. I was so lucky to dine at @sanctuarymandela Mandela's primary residence prepared by his personal chef, #XoliswaNdoyiya with fine dining but also at Chez Alina in a Sowetan family home that was so fun and authentic. Special private tours took in Nelson's home during apartheid, Vilakazi Street, Constitution Hill and Constitutional Court. We met many more people (further posts) and it was amazing to see the work #VirginUnite does in #SouthAfrica as well as learn from @richardbranson himself and his relationship with #Mandela and deep feelings for the country. One of the charities supported was the @g_macheltrust who was married to #Madiba where we learned about their support for female entrepreneurs. Caroline @komeyville_1 works with them and just visited London, where I was able to show some of Mandela in London! What a beautiful Country. So thankful to see it and with the amazing people #SatopiaTravel put together. Thank you! 💙

We should always be looking for ways to give back, but right now tends to be the season for giving. I know it can be hard to select one specific nonprofit or cause which is why I think it's absolutely amazing to see what Virgin Unite is doing. My good friend, Suzy Gigante is the Senior Community Manager for Virgin Unite and shared how what started as a family foundation for the Branson family has turned into a first of its kind nonprofit that utilizes entrepreneurial ingenuity to fund multiple causes. Suzy and I not only talked about how we can all do good and work with Virgin Unite but she also shared how her career journey turned out differently than she had originally planned. I adore Suzy and am so lucky that we were able to spend a week together on the gorgeous Necker Island and become friends. When God be for you, no-one can be against you! I remember these pictures like it was yesterday. We were invited to see the amazing work being done by @virginunite in South Africa and spend some time with @richardbranson. Some of these pictures were taken at an event where I admitted to everyone that I was struggling to understand why I was even there. You know when imposter syndrome kicks in. It happens to me all the time. Our task was to give help and advice to entrepreneurs and one of the entrepreneurs on my table was in the mining industry. I sat there thinking, 'oh my gosh, I don't know anything and I can't help him'. Why couldn't he be starting a property business or something in the creative field? All of a sudden I'm in this spiral of fear, doubt and lack of confidence. At the end of the session I was in tears and owned up to the fact that I was really struggling - not only just to help this guy, but to also see my value. I kept thinking 'what am I doing here?'. What was interesting was the amount of people (especially women) who resonated with how I felt. Me sharing my truth allowed them to share theirs. What I've realised is that you have to kick imposter syndrome to the kerb and then recognise when a door is opening for you, have the courage to walk through that door and truly believe that you have everything you need in order to do what you have to do. If you've been following me for a while you'll know that I have favour over my life - especially in the areas of property and connections. Doors open for me (literally) that no man can shut. I was in South Africa and had a seat at the table for a reason no matter how I felt. So be encouraged and know that you are exactly where you're supposed to be. Don't let anyone tell you different. And if you're not where you want to be, get ready, a door is about to open for you! ❤️

We were in NYC earlier this week for the launch of the Planetary Guardians. It was very sobering to hear that the world is now beyond the "safe operating space for humanity" in six of the nine Planetary Boundaries. BUT it was inspiring a) to be reminded of success (with the ozone layer now on track for full recovery after the world paid attention and worked together to ban CFCs) and b) to be shown a path forward in relation to the nine Boundaries in an annual health check plan and c) to hear optimism. We know what the solutions are; we now 'just' need to implement them. 🌊 World Mangrove Day | A good date to salute Necker Island’s mangrove conservation work — as celebrated by Juliet Kinsman when she contributed to their book, Natural Necker, published by Master Storytellers for Richard Branson. When you get to know these tropical shoreline shrubs, you understand why environmentalists consider them among the most deserving of protection when it comes to climate solutions. These clusters of seawater-growing greens are seriously important. Not only is this tropical vegetation many times more effective than human-manufactured flood protection, these mean greens sequester and store carbon while providing precious habitat for fish and crustacea. Around 70% of mangroves have been wiped out globally. Mostly due to coastal property development, or mass-market shrimp farming, but in the British Virgin Islands, it's because of Hurricane Irma. Necker Island marks World Mangrove Day today with the launch of a new Mangrove Conservation Tour 🍃 Be a part of the incredible mangrove conservation efforts in the British Virgin Islands with this immersive tour, where you will paddle or kayak through indigenous mangroves, learn about the work that goes into their rehabilitation and preservation before getting hands-on with planting mangrove propagules. LOVED spending more time in New York! I used to hate New York and my friend asked me what it was about the city that had changed.. “Nothing”, I said… “I changed” This particular trip was an invitation from @virginunite to learn about and discuss how to redefine leadership for mental well-being and create positive organizational change. Virgin brought together 100 ceos and leaders to think together on how to integrate mental and health and well-being as a priority at board level and throughout the workplace - and the conversations were 🔥 As well as this we had a Michelin chef prepared us lunch and all the snacks which were 😍 AND I made time (daily) to see my friends at @remedyplace for lymphatic compression, sauna, ice bath & cryo… my second home in LA - and now in New York 😝 I’ve been involved with @virginstartup + Virgin Unite for the last 10+ years and when my bestie @nataliemacneil showcased their latest projects for us on Necker Island this 100% human at work project was a full yes for me to support with. And my favorite thing about all things Virgin… is definitely THE PEOPLE… And even if we took the essence of this through our own businesses and work places, with the intention of creating more positive relationships at work, I’m sure we’d see a rise in the experience of great days at work too. Dear Dad, For the first time, I didn’t post on your actual birthday (June 21st), but that’s because I always like writing out my feelings day of, not beforehand. And because this year, on your birthday I got to attend (and facilitate a conversation!) at @virginunite’s 100% Human At Work Conference. This intimate, invite-only gathering brings together the most forward thinking, people-first minds from every industry, across the world. For more than half a decade, it’s consistently my most favorite room to be in. So, Dad, your present this year is to know that you’re the reason I get to be in rooms like that, sharing BRAVE with some of the most influential, impactful, intentional people in companies around our world. I didn’t write, not because I didn’t have time, I didn’t write because I didn’t have words. I didn’t even know how to describe how happy, proud, grateful, excited (I could go on) I am to be at the forefront of building The Future of the Workplace with some really wonderful humans. And to think, it all started #overcoffee. So, happy birthday, Dad, a day doesn’t pass that I don’t wish you were here, but days like the 21st (and the ones that followed) really remind me of how much I’d give to tell you all about my day and hear your proud “woooooow” and the smile in your voice even just one more time. I found myself surrounded by an awe-inspiring group of 40 people - entrepreneurs, thought leaders, humanists, scientists, artists, even a Michelin-starred chef. Each one successful and sharp-minded, and all with a generous spirit that created an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie unlike any I've known. I found myself welcomed into an extraordinary circle of individuals. For five incredible days, sleep was the last thing on my mind. Every moment was a chance to learn, grow, and connect. Each conversation felt like a gift, and I wanted to absorb as much as possible. So, a heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. I left Necker Island transformed by the experience and the people.
