Ever wonder why this mythical Griffin creature is guarding the historic structures along Scott Ave?! Today’s Children’s Museum was originally our Tucson Carnegie Library designed by the famous architect Henry Trost in 1901. The building originally had Griffins on the upper corners of the building. Historically Griffins were placed on buildings such as libraries to stand watch over valuables. The Griffins are said to have been destroyed in a fire that damaged the library on February 2, 1941….however it is believed one of the creatures, named Toby, escaped the fire, its tracks visible in the concrete sidewalk! Today Toby stands watch over the historic structures along Scott Avenue. A Griffin is a mythological mammal with the torso, back legs and tail of a lion, plus wings, front legs and head of an eagle - part lion part eagle.
