I’m prepping for my online draw club session tomorrow morning on the topic of embracing mistakes. So, I gathered these memories of a fully documented moment in early 2020 when I had an accidental ink spill that led me to resolve this piece in my Shape Of Time series differently than I intended. Originally, I had wanted to have a lot of negative space above mine and my daughter’s head and then one or two “thought clouds” that implied the serenity slash exhaustion of early parenting…instead this drip took me on a roller coaster ride that ended up somewhere in my original ball park, but I still think one or two highly contrasting clouds in negative space would have worked better. But that’s not what happened and that’s fine. The art knows what it’s doing sometimes more than you do, and you just have to trust it…
Lately, I have been trying to work on my line quality, so I started with off-hand flourishing samples to help me improve while also practicing my arm movement. After a long writing break, I am not where I want to be, but showing up every day will take me there. This design belongs to Romont. It's 24 hours now and they seem secure. Drawing trees . I had my first run of April yesterday, out along the Mawddach Estuary towards the George III pub. It’s been too wet to bother lately, but the sun was shining and I was briefly ahead on some drawings. I ran past this tree and remembered I’d made an ink sketch of it a few years back after returning from Sarah Simblet’s brilliant tree drawing course at West Dean. It was drawn in home-made walnut ink & gouache on a moleskine paper that was large unsuited to the wet medium, but enjoyable to work with nonetheless. I’ll be running an online introduction to drawing trees in a few weeks time, linked to the #inspiredbyknepp exhibition at @kneppwilding - there are more details in the link in my bio. I’ll also be sharing some more details of the work I’ll be showing in the exhibition over the next week as we get closer to the opening date. The longer strokes are harder to make, but get easier the more I do them. I’m going to need a lot more practice before these letters actually look good, but not bad at all for a first try. As promised, here is a straight on view of the piece in my previous image. I am always surprised at how these panels speak to one another in most any arrangement. I’d love to see them find a home in a more public space. Each panel is about 20 x 20 x 1 inches. They are Japanese, and Korean paper, marked with Sumi, acrylic a walnut ink I make myself, and collaged over BFK Rives paper and vintage mining maps on cradled board.
