This wednesday at the #zengulfcafe we created some renaissance zen buttons , experimenting from Lesson 7 of the Primer that how reticula and fragments are " good examples of shared structure and similar results from different approaches that happen in Zentangle art." from the Primer - Vol 1. 2 years ago, just prior to heading over to Sydney to see #patmetheny I was saddened by the news of the death of his long time collaborator, #jazzkeyboardist #lylemays. Having had the good fortune to see the #patmethenygroup several times, it was always an amazing combination when they played together. I was always struck by his amazing fingers which seemed so long and slender. It was mesmerizing to watch. The last time we saw #lyle was in #newyork where we managed to go to the same restaurant, pre show. Lyle’s solo albums are some of our favorites and are perfect for a #roadtrip. A musician is lucky enough to have his music live on. I wanted to do this portrait a couple of years ago but am too soft to draw someone recently departed. A slow build up of pencil sketch, pen, watercolour, pen and coloured pencil. I tried to work loose and quickly compared with some of the other portraits in this challenge. In a typical drawing, when we draw on a light surface with a dark medium (graphite, charcoal, or sepia, etc.), we start with the darkest areas and gradually approach the lightest lights, in other words we go from dark to light. Drawing on a dark surface requires a complete opposite and reversed approach, as we start with the lightest areas first, and as I like to say, pull the lights out of the dark. This is a great exercise for strengthening the vision of tonal values, and has always been part of the curriculum practiced in acclaimed traditional academies of art. Here’s a portrait I drew! I created this piece on Strathmore toned gray paper, a mechanical pencil for the sketch, the Prismacolor graphite drawing set to shade the face and neck, as well as the Raffiné charcoal pencils for the base layer of the hair, and to add dark shading. For highlights, I used the Koh-I-Noor white chalk pencil for the base layer of the face and neck, General’s white chalk for the bright highlights, mostly in the hair, as well as part of the background, and the Uniball Signo white gel pen for the highlights in the eyes.
