I was broke, heartbroken, many dreams had been shattered (or so it seemed) and I had taken a job I wasn't too thrilled with, at a large medical laboratory -- practically the only job I could find quickly at the time, to begin paying a credit card debt to the bank. The company paid my boarding for the first month -- after that, I'd be on my own, in a city where I didn't know a Soul, with a shoe string budget and doing a job I wasn't particularly excited about. Plus, it was summertime, and it was HOT... The hotel wasn't a Howard Johnson back then -- I believe it was called Mansión de la Calle Real. It was nice to explore the premises almost 28 years later... When Jesus says “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” He is echoing humanity’s blindness to the goodness of God. We know this to be true because just days before His death on the cross, Jesus says, “I am not alone, for the Father is with me” (Jn 16:32). Jesus is also quoting the first verse of Psalm 22, and in doing so is referencing the whole psalm. Later in Psalm 22:24, David writes, “He has NOT hidden his face from Him but has listened to his cry for help.” Jesus is God’s cry on behalf of humanity. He is the great echo of our pain and the deep healing of that pain. By His wounds we are made whole. The cruciform love of God is our healing. God hanging on the cross is our restoration. It is God breaking into the darkness of our understanding and shining His light there. It is God revealing Himself fully to us, destroying every false and idolotrous idea that we have ever had of Him. God has always looked like Jesus. We just didn’t always see this. The cross is the great deconstruction of every lie we have ever believed about God. Jesus is the truth that sets us free. May you discover complete freedom and healing in Christ’s love for you today. He will absolutely never abandon you. He is with you in your darkness night and has absolutely nothing against you. For most who have experienced a life-changing loss, a grief that big is also an occasion to wrestle with our faith. What do we believe? Why do we believe that? It has been a quiet week in my writing. I have found it hard to connect and to hear from God. I know He has not left me, but these are dry moments where life has become hectic and the noise of the day shuts out the quiet whispers in my soul. Jesus, overwhelmed on the cross, felt deeply this silence from God. More so than I'm at this time. He allowed the feelings of forsakenness to crush him in those hours where His love for us kept Him nailed to that cross. Yet, in these times where we feel so abandoned and separated, we can be confident and know the Lord is here, present with us. Allow these moments to be and do not fear that God has turned from you. Two days ago, I was remembering when I used to sing in the choir during Holy Week. There was a Good Friday song that I really liked when I was little and I remember two older girls called Trish and Yvette from my church who used to sing the solo for it. I was hit with inspiration and I thought to myself, "I want to do it too." Apparently Trish and Yvette made up the solo, so I couldn't find any versions of it, but I did find the sheet music for the choral part. At 2am, I decided to learn the soprano, alto, tenor and bass part and record them myself. I didn't use any voice alteration for the male parts, I just sang lower. Then I used my audio software to add reverb and ambience. Even if you're not Catholic, give it a listen anyway.
