I see you learning, growing, and changing in order that you may more effectively parent your kid. I see the assessments, the evaluations, the concerns, and the celebrations over victories that never would have been victories with your other children. ***************************** Oh, Will, I see you. I see you trying so hard. I see the way your brain conspires against you but, also, how it is a brilliant mind beyond compare. I see your heart, your depth, your honesty. You are worth every second I spend learning about how you tick and then fighting for you to be seen and understood. I am not the person I was seven years ago, and I'm certainly not the mom I was. Today is Will’s one year DIAVERSARY!! It has been one whole year since his type 1 diagnosis, and it’s been one heck of a ride!! Looking back over this past year, it seems like a blur. We blinked, and here we are. On the other hand, it’s hard to remember life before this. As Will said, it feels like 5 years!! I know there are days that he wishes he could eat something without having to count carbs or take insulin first, or play sports without paying attention to his blood sugars. We are so proud of his determined and strong willed spirit. He has never questioned why this has happened and just takes it all in stride. He measures out his carbs himself and doses himself with insulin through his pump. He has never let this stop him or hold him back from anything he does, from football to baseball, to swimming and fishing. He came home from the hospital a year ago checking his blood sugars and giving himself injections shortly after, at barely 7. We are so thankful for the technology to be able to track his blood sugars with his Dexcom and his Omnipod that gives him insulin. We know that he can have a wonderful quality of life, but the gravity of it is that it is life or death for him every day. Will has no idea, but he has definitely taught me so much this past year. Life is definitely full of fun and laughter with him in it. We are so thankful for everyone that has helped take care of our sweet boy this past year. We are incredibly thankful for his teachers Mrs. Virgets and Mrs. Hopper for being so patient and caring with him. And we are forever grateful for Megan, Will’s favorite nurse and buddy for going above and beyond for him each day. I walked into the library. Will's class was there and I found him sitting quietly on a small couch, his nose buried in his new book. I sat next to him, put my arm around his shoulders, and laid my cheek on the top of his head. I sat there for a minute, just breathing. I've been working in a behavioral support position. I have a heart for the children who struggle to regulate their emotions and process their feelings. I didn't use to. But God shook up my life and blessed me with a kid who taught me how to see beyond the behaviors and beyond what we call typical. So, I spend many of my subbing days trying to help the ones who maybe need it most. Today was a challenging day. Really, this week has been a bit of a mess. But today, I was operating on a virus that has zapped my energy and a total lack of sleep. It was an exhausting day, and by 11:50 am, I found myself worrying about bursting into tears at an inopertune time. (Read: There's never really an opertune time.) I found my son. The way a child finds her parent for a hug. A momentary role reversal. I knew that seeing his face would give me just the boost I needed to finish the next 2+ hours. Because he's my family. He's my love. In a sea of kids, he's MY kid. It takes all of me to raise him. But pouring all of me into him means that when I'm totally drained, I can give him a squeeze and get a little of me back. Today makes 5 months since our sweet Will’s type 1 diagnosis. The months have flown, but at the same time it feels like an eternity. He has definitely handled this better than I could have ever hoped. He is truly my inspiration. Whenever I get discouraged or overwhelmed by living the type 1 life, he makes me quickly realize that we need to keep going and live each day to the fullest. Today makes one whole month since Will’s type 1 diagnosis. This is something we hoped and prayed would never happen to one of our children, as Eric has been a type 1 since age 11. Well, here we are, and it’s definitely been a whirlwind. But it has not stopped our sweet (and mischievous) Will! "Mom! Can you come rock me?" he called out. "Rock you...how?" I questioned. We don't have a rocking chair. "You know, like when I was little," he replied. When Will was a toddler, he was suffering so much from the effects of his hyperactive brain that, often, he could not be still enough to sleep--especially at nap time. So I "rocked" him. "Rocking" meant that I would hold him TIGHTLY in the pictured position and twist back and forth quickly WHILE pacing around the room until he fell asleep. The routine had to be precise or it DID NOT work. As he got bigger and heavier, it got harder. But he NEEDED that sleep. I needed him to have that sleep. I can remember my arms screaming in exhaustion as I rocked and swayed and paced under his weight for sometimes close to an hour. I begged God to just help my child fall asleep or help my arms endure another minute. I hated those long, long "rocking" sessions. And I loved them. Eventually he would fall asleep (usually) and I would stare down at my child and just breathe him in. Those were eye of the storm moments. The rare calm. He grew much too big for me to rock like that awhile ago. But tonight, when he asked, I accepted--for a few minutes. He's all limbs and lank and pounds now. As I rocked, I thought about those long hours, wondering why he couldn't sleep, worrying, sometimes crying in frustration, needing respite and being met, instead, with only another day of perseverance. I want to go back to that version of me and whisper, "This too shall pass. And sometimes, you will even miss it." Just a boy in his bunker. Today, when I picked him up from children's church, I was told that he, "was excellent." Excellent. That was the word she used. I'm not sure that word has ever been used to describe Will's behavior. Ever. And so I'm putting that in a special box in my mind. The weeks and months ebb and flow. Seasons come and go. You know the part in the Incredibles 2 where Baby Jack Jack gets ALL THE POWERS and he's basically going through walls and levitating and whatnot? So that's Will. I mean, he essentially has superpowers without having superpowers. If you're the parent of a neurodiverse child you don't need me to explain myself. There is so much energy that it's a wonder this child did not explode upon entry. So when I saw the cartoon version of him (courtesy of the #violaapp ), I just instantly had an entire film flash before my eyes. It's like Dennis the Menace except that under all that curiosity and mischief is the sweetest soul who longs to please everyone--right up until the moment his "disorder" takes over. Right up until the moment he realizes he can't. But what if we stopped calling it a disorder? Maybe the "disability" is a trade off for the brain that learns over 90 high frequency words in a handful of days? What if all the hyper is in exchange for his ability to learn and remember the most random facts about reticulated pythons and Australia? What if he needed the rapid fire brain that cannot regulate emotions in order to learn to ride a bike without training wheels at barely three and slug a baseball without a tee that same year? What if we could see the world the way he sees it? What if we just simply HAD to cut a hole in the wall because we just simply HAD to know if there were snakes living in there? What if there was a show or a movie that taught kids (and adults, especially adults) with typical brains how to be kind and gentle and patient with kids like Will? If there was, I think the protagonist would look exactly like this. **The eye color changes are weird. July 2020, the Peace Committee collaborated with our friends @thetalladegacollege in Alabama to tell the story of William Luke, a local Preacher who went down to Alabama from Artemesia in the 1860s to educate in the Black Community. He, along with seven of his Black students were lynched by the Ku Klux Klan. This event was live streamed to thousands of people. People in Grey Highlands and Talladega told the story so that it would not be forgotten. The event demonstrated that, even when We don’t know just what to do or say about something so heinous, we can at least share humanity and decency and connection. Super thankful that today's echocardiogram revealed only an innocent aortic flow murmur. For a second there we thought it could have been something scary. . . Some of the questions were hilarious. Does he seem to have energy? Is he often lethargic? Can he keep up with other kids his age? Yeah, buddy. He runs circles around them. . . This was requested by his PCP and came out of left field for us. We're praising God for a good outcome. And I'm praising God that Will was an absolute champion angel patient today. No extra energy. The neighbor girl has 1,000,002 costumes. As they played together, he came out dressed as Rapunzel, minus the hair. It was adorable and hysterical. He twirled and asked if he was a dancing girl. . . When he first walked out, my breath caught somewhere before it reached my lungs. He's stunningly beautiful. I always imagine that Kate would have looked exactly like Will, just with longer curls. Turns out, if Will puts on a dress, it's so easy to see. . . For a split second, I almost cried. I miss her.
