I relate to a Crab Apple. I seem so sweet and friendly to most people, but anyone who knows me well can see that I have grappled with a lot of Demand Avoidance and processing delays that make it hard for me to play games, compete, and perform. Rejection sensitivity has closed doors I never imagined could be closed and made some relationships impossible. It’s my deceptively complicated mind that unique needs that have revealed the loyalties and compassion in some of my friendships but also the cruelty and impatience of others. It’s hard to hang out like a crab apple and know I AM bitter and learning how to stop trying to sweeten myself to be palatable to those who have the wrong idea about me. To recognized that I was told I had to taste like an apple when that would never be possible has been weird. I only need to be sweetened (masked) if I want to be easily consumed. I don’t mean to be either. I am gorgeous, enigmatic, AND bittersweet at best. 😉 So how do you get misjudged? Do you ever get mislabeled or find yourself wondering how you can’t seem to fit your own ideas of how you “should be?” #adhdwomen #audhdwoman #audhder #bipolarawareness #neurodivergent #neurodiverse #neurospicy #neurospicy🌶 #adhdmom #autisticadults #autisticmom #audhdmom

Last Thursday, our CAYRgiver Circle meet-up discussed Autistic Perspectives on variety of topics, including masking and unmasking. We've been thinking about masking a lot since reading Dr. Devon Price's "Unmasking Autism" for our book club last fall. So, here are some tidbits we wanted to share on masking. This appalling Conservative government are hoping that their targeting of the weak and vulnerable will translate into votes come the General Election. Their focus on immigration and disability benefits pander to the inclinations of their support base who suck up a simplistic narrative of blame based not on facts but on callous nationalism. The extremes of language we are seeing now from the Prime Minister and other government ministers were once the preserve of nasty and palpably malevolent Right-Wing political groups. It is truly shocking how far the political goal posts have moved in recent years, not only in the UK but in the US and Europe as well. I truly hope that the Conservatives are trounced at the polls but even if a Labour government is re-elected I fear their own recent policy accommodations of this nationalistic rhetoric may still present an unpleasant challenge to the lives of so many of us. #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #asd #adhd #decolonise #autistic #neurodiverse #decolonize #neurodivergent #autismassessment #autisticmemes #autismlife #autismspectrum #autismsupport #disability #employment #capitalism #exploitation #autismspectrumdisorder #latediagnosedautistic #autismadvocate #adultautism #mentalhealth #actuallyautistic #neurodiversity #poetry #writing #autistic-poetry #poems

I took some time this weekend to choose fabrics for the next dozen Ice Cream Soda blocks. About half of them are basted and some have started to be pieced. I like to piece one half of the centers, then add 2 of the jewel pieces and one crown so I can see what it is going to look like! Then I put all the pieces for one or two blocks into my fabric envelopes to carry along with me. Seems to be working great. Back to basting while I wait for my pain to subside. I swept for 3 minutes so I have to wait about 30 to be able to sweep some more. Pain disorders are so inconvenient. But I will find a good French mystery to watch til my timer goes off, and I make myself get up and hurt again. Stupid pain brain. I need a magic wand. #artoverfibro #crps #neurodiverse #eppeverywhere #icecreamsodaquilt #quiltersofinstagram

Do you find your child needs a bit of extra time to warm to new situations?⁣ ⁣ Shyness is often discussed and labelled as if it’s a personality trait when we should be explaining to our children that it is a feeling in that situation and not who they are.⁣ ⁣ As I always say, every child is different and some are more open to jumping straight into a new situation where as others need a little bit more time and support to build their confidence and security.⁣ ⁣ And that’s totally okay!⁣ ⁣ When we find our child is struggling to get involved or settle into a situation, phrases like these can help them to feel supported and encourage them to open up in their own time.⁣ ⁣ Share this post to help other parents out there navigate this common parenting experience ♥⁣ ⁣ For more hint and tips on phrases to use with your kids, follow @drhayleycrain⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #EmpoweringKids #PositiveParenting #childpsychologist #neurodiverse #parentingtools #childpsychologist #parentingadvice #parentsofig #childhooddevelopment #earlychildhoodeducation #raisingtinyhumans #parentingprobs #positiveparenting ⁣⁣⁣ #mindfulparent #parentingtip #parentinghacks #parentinghelp #settingboundaries #anxietysupport #kidswithanxiety #anxietyinchildren #childrensmentalhealth #kidsmentalhealth #shykids #shychild

People with ASD have skills, talents, and strengths they contribute to their work or community. Fostering these qualities after high school requires planning before they graduate. To help students with ASD have a successful post-high school transition, consider: - Coaching them on how to advocate for themselves. Have discussions about how their diagnosis impacts how they think and work, and what they need to be successful in tasks. - Informing families about the extent of their student’s IEP, and discussing how they can get accommodations in college. - Exploring all education and career options with the student, highlighting their strengths and interests. -Discussing and practicing socially appropriate behaviors with the students, so they can better prepare for college or the workplace. #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness #Neurodiverse #DiverseLearners

Still over here with a few meals the girls will eat 👋🏻😄it's a difficult one, would I like them to eat a more varied diet, yes. Would I like them to eat more fruit and vegetables?, also yes. However are they eating?, yes. Are they healthy? I would say also yes.  Ava chooses to have school dinners even after giving her the option of packed lunch, this is massive! She pushes herself out of her comfort during the week so will always have food she is comfortable with at home. Lilah probably has the most restricted diet, I'm hoping when she starts reception and tries school dinners with her friends it will open up more foods for her. Are your children more likely to eat and try foods with their friends? I definitely feel this is the case for Ava.

Homework! To a lot of our kids with ADHD, the thought of homework triggers anxiety and emotional dysregulation. They have worked to maintain their focus for an entire day of school. Once they get home, there is nothing left. Try reframing homework time. Sometimes we need to create positive reinforcers to get through difficult times. When it is time for homework, turn on some background music and have crunchy snacks on hand. Set a designated area for homework; let your child decorate it and pick out fun supplies. Having everything you need within reach eliminates the need to search for items while doing homework. Be sure to set a timer for scheduled breaks. You have to figure out what works for your child. Some kids can only work in 15 minute blocks before needing a 5 minute movement break. www.newagendarva.com #ADHD #ASD #Autism #Autismspectrumdisorder #Attentiondeficithyperactivitydisorder #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #executivefunction #executivedysfunction #lifeskills #Specialeducation #intellectualdisabilities #learningdisabilities #organization #timemanagement #EF #goodvibes #homework

🩷💜 𝗡 𝗘 𝗨 𝗥 𝗢 𝗗 𝗜 𝗩 𝗘 𝗥 𝗦 𝗜 𝗧 𝗬 💜🩷 Today I’m joining in with the theme set by Esther @mrsbrownsbookbox #8brilliantbooks to help gain a better understanding of neurodiversity. This word is explained brilliantly by Abigail Balfe in her book 𝘼 𝘿𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙎𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙡 see photo 4. I highly recommend reading this one! I’ll repeat the words I wrote two years ago about this theme as they seem still pertinent. ‘As a teacher and a parent I have a better understanding than ever before of how people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; that there is no one ‘correct’ or ‘normal’ way of thinking, learning, and behaving. Rather than making such differences a thing that divides us; this diversity of interaction and experience to me is something we should celebrate.’ The books I’ve chosen are either about neurodiverse characters or real life individuals or have been written by authors who have lived experience of neurodiversity themselves for example; Louise Gooding, Joe Wells, Dara McAnulty Abigail Balfe, or through their child; Emily Snape, Kate Power and Kathy Iwanczak Forsyth. Two of these books were from the library, two sent for review and the rest bought for our bookshelves. 🩷 Looking forward to what else is shared this week for this important theme 💜 #8brilliantbooks2024 #8brilliantbooks2024_neurodivergence #neurodiverse #diversifyyourshelves #windowsandmirrors #readforempathy #walkinsomeoneelsesshoes #booksaboutneurodivergence #andrearecommendsbooks #wirralbusiness #wirralmums #educa8wirral

Understanding Predominantly Inattentive ADHD 🌟 Hi everyone! Did you know that struggling with organization, getting easily distracted, or constantly procrastinating might be signs of predominantly inattentive ADHD? It’s a less discussed subtype of ADHD, which doesn’t include the obvious hyperactivity but affects attention and task management. As someone on my own journey of understanding ADHD, I’m driven to share insights that I wish I had known earlier. Recognizing these subtle signs can be a crucial step towards seeking help and managing symptoms more effectively. If you find yourself often forgetting appointments, feeling overwhelmed by starting tasks, or making small mistakes despite your best efforts, it might be time to explore this further with a professional. Have these traits resonated with you? Tell me in the comments!—your story could be the insight someone else needs!💙 . . . . #adhd #add #adhdawareness #adhdmemes #adhdwomen #adhdsupport #adhdadults #asd #autism #autismmom #autismmemes #autismfamily #adhdexplained #mentalhealth #selfhelp #adhdtraits #inattentiveadhd #neurodivergent #neurodiverse #npf

Unpopular Opinion: Medical Gaslighting Begins with Medical Terminology: Neurodiverse, SIDS, Autoimmune? 😖 . That language sets up the perfect COVER-STORY to avoid taking responsibility for INJURING BABIES - and instead blaming the victim as being born “defective.” . Because unpopular opinions trigger human brains to act like lizards, I ask you to RESPOND VS REACT in the comments. Bad behavior and disrespectful discussion will be deleted. . Healthcare Professionals may really dislike this POV. I suggest the brainwashing to normalize brain damage and neurological deficit has swung so far it reminds me of the “Glorification of Obesity” we are seeing as well. . Normalizing and even praising damaged/unhealthy structure - function (SIDS, Autism, ADHD, Autoimmune) is a dangerous concept that has taken over modern “healthcare” in the name of never offending anyone and never getting caught as the guy that caused it. (I’m looking at you, Rockefeller.) . What comes up for you on the complicated topic? 👇🏽👇🏽 Let’s discuss thoughtfully with ❤️ for each other and our children #neurodiversity #autism #neurodivergent #adhd #neurodiverse #mentalhealth #specialneeds #anxiety #adhdawareness #adhdlife #sensoryprocessingdisorder

My son started reception this year and he has come home with not only different behaviours, but also different regional dialects. It’s mad! But they’re sponges and they’re curious. Don’t panic, but remind them who they are. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⁣ . . . By type A task I’m referring to those high effort tasks that we tend to complete just before their deadline. It’s the type of task you know you should be working on but you’re not 😂 Point of this video: you’re not lazy, when you procrastinate, your body is in a state of freeze, your sympathetic NS is activated and you’re avoiding facing the uncomfortable. This doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about this. To unfreeze your body, focus on bottom up practices such as deep breathing, bilateral stimulation or even pressing your palm against your heart. You can slowly move towards simpler tasks to build up momentum. ➡️ you can now book your first consultation with me via link in my bio during which I can help you work through this and learn how to strive healthily #adhd #add #adhdcoaching #adhdtips #adhdproblems #adhdawareness #fyp #explorepage #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #adultadhd

When I first started homeschooling, I thought it would be easy for me to transition from years in the classroom to homeschooling one child. I was so wrong. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I didn’t expect my child to say no to an assignment or activity. Students don’t get to say “no” to the teacher, right? My child’s resistance took many forms. Sometimes it was a super polite, “No thank you, Mommy.” Other times it was crashing to the floor while screaming and crying, turning over chairs, or – on a really bad day – kicking and hitting me. It was intense and awful some days. I didn’t want to tell anyone what was happening. No one supported our decision to homeschool and I didn’t want to share my child’s worst behavior with friends and family. I reached a point where I felt trapped and I had to do something. I gave myself time to reflect on what was happening and use what I knew about child development, learning, and psychology to piece together what my unique child’s learning needs were and how to create learning experiences that set them up to engage and thrive. I wish that I had had a coach to turn to for support. And I wish that I had known other families struggling with homeschooling and learning a different approach. ❤️ I would have benefited a lot from hearing about their experiences and their homeschooling wins. It would have made me feel a lot more confident in my ability to turn things around sooner. I became a homeschooling coach because I don’t want any parent to struggle on their own to figure out how to homeschool their neurodivergent child without resistance, power struggles, and meltdowns getting in the way. ❤️❤️ And I started my group coaching program so parents just like you can have even more support, community, and learn the Communicate. Plan. Connect Framework at a slower pace and at an accessible price point. ❤️❤️ If this sounds like the kind of support you’re looking for, schedule a free consultation call and see if you’re a good fit for my group coaching program. Do you have a neurodiverse family that has one or more members with a learning disability, mental illness, developmental issue or physical neurological challenge like epilepsy? If so, does your family need help? Here’s a reminder to anyone living in the San Francisco Bay Area that on Tues., April 30, in Campbell, CA, I’ll be doing a reading from BLISS ROAD, my memoir about being the daughter of an undiagnosed autistic dad. That will be followed by a conversation with Lisa Sinclair, a certified ADHD and dyslexia coach, and Jen Kuhn, a child psychologist and neurodiversity researcher. We’ll talk about how to help neurodiverse families thrive through such services as family coaching. There will be a Pacific Autism Center for Education (PACE) representative in attendance to hand out information and answer questions. If you don’t live nearby, please connect! I’ve had online meetups with the adult children of neurodiverse parents; in-person conversations with neurodiverse parents and educators; and podcast discussions with therapists unfamiliar with the particular challenges that face neurodiverse families. If you have questions, I’ll be happy to talk to you, too! All families deserve to be happy. Some just need a little more help than others. RSVP at MarthaEngber (dot) com. "Confirmation bias" occurs when we pay closer attention to details or information that supports and reinforces what we already think or believe. All of us have beliefs about ourselves and our relationships that get reinforced every day. Take note of the root beliefs you have, and recognize which ones are the loudest voices in your head. You will pay more attention to everything that reinforces what those voices are saying. Even if those voices are wrong! 🌐 Visit me online at JodiCarlton.com to learn more. 📱 FOLLOW ME: Facebook, Instagram and TikTok: @thejodicarlton LinkedIn: Jodi Carlton #autistics #autisticadults #asd #autismlove #autism #adultautism #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergence #communication #relationships #jodicarlton

“Neurodiversity” is a popular term that’s used to describe differences in the way people’s brains work. The idea is that there’s no “correct” way for the brain to work. Instead, there is a wide range of ways that people perceive and respond to the world, and these differences are to be embraced and encouraged. Neurodiversity was coined in the 1990s to fight stigma against people with autism, as well as ADHD and learning disorders like dyslexia. It’s grown into a movement to support people who are neurodivergent — outside of the mainstream in the way their brains work — and to focus on developing their strengths and talents. Just finalising the last few details on my new book which will be released in the Summer. Published by the brilliant @penteractpress ‘Small gestures of endurance’ is a volume of accumulated fragments which might be considered an archive of associations, a layering of domestic histories, an insolent but smitten reading of Virginia Woolf’s ‘To the Lighthouse’ An almost imperceptible act of resistance Text blocks act as rooms to drift through accompanied by abstracted drawings based on the experience of folding and unfolding domestic textiles #VirginiaWoolf #artistsbook #books #pages #rooms #domestic #feminist #folding #unfolding #tablecloth #textiles #text #drawing #vispo #memory #resistance #multivocal #meandering #neurodiverse #hyperfocus

Being #autistic and #adhd and parenting a #neurodivergent child is not easy but I have found so much healing in it. The more I learn about neurodivergence the more I can advocate and accommodate my son’s unique brain and then can use those same tools for myself. The reparenting I have done for my self has made a huge impact in my daily life. I am better able to understand my needs and ask for help, accommodations and grace. What type of accommodations do you ask for? #neurodivergent #accomadation #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neuroscience #neurodivergentmemes #adhd #audhd #neurodivergentmom

“He’s a bad girl!” (All humans are assigned “he” as a pronoun from Reese who doesn’t understand pronouns). This is what Reese told me about a child at school. Reese is wild but also the sweetest boy with the most innocent mind but he’s taking in a lot as he enters a new and much bigger school. He went to a very small play preschool where lessons were kid led. Now it’s adult led and rules, rewards and consequences are now a thing. He’s been quite obsessed with the reward system at school and tells me daily who got a success award and who got a time out and why. He’s the most detailed child. So the other day when he told me about a child I really leaned in and listen. He told me a girl stole his sand toys. “He is very bad. He doesn’t even talk! When the bell rings he never lines up and just stays on the playground!” Has anyone figured out where this is going??? I’m listening as my little boy describes a child who is likely neurodiverse (guessing by his clues) as “bad.” His sister is also neurodiverse. We read a lot of books and have many conversations about differences but when the kid looks the same, sometimes their differences in behavior is viewed as “bad”. I’m a mother who doesn’t even believe there is such thing as a “bad” kid, just bad circumstances or like his sister a child functioning in a world designed without her in mind and taking longer to figure out how things work. So we chatted. We discussed how if this girl can’t talk yet, she probably doesn’t know how to share yet and doesn’t know the rules on the playground yet. Now he’s on a mission to help her. He understands she’s not being bad, she’s still learning. This was a lesson to me that we still have a lot of work to do. I bought some additional books on autism and my hope is that these books can be added to our school library so all the kids can begin to understand that not everyone functions in the world the same way. Let’s teach our kids to get in the sandbox with a child who is different, ask their name even if they can’t respond and begin to see that everyone is unique and everyone wants and deserves to belong. #raisethemkind #bethedifference #neurodiverse #specialneedssiblings

What a beautiful day of walking and music 💚 Apologies for the massive recruitment drive for today's gig, but Simon Wells is one of those people you've got to hear. I spent a large proportion of my teenage years listening to his guitar tone on various punk records, so dragging him up from London to perform was a bit of a moment for me. Thank you to those that came out and made it great, including the amazing team at the Priory Hotel. You guys smashed it once again #neurodiverse #love
