Dear sister, I know you’re embarrassed and that’s okay. I’ve experienced embarrassment myself. I’ve felt it when I bled through my shorts, stained the sheets, and the packaging my the pad crackled too loudly in the bathroom. I’ve been afraid to look at the blood that came every month. I’ve been scared that the twinges of pain might be a bursting cyst or something worse. I’ve seen my anatomy and cycle as something to be dryly and meticulously tracked with medical precision. I’ve passed huge clots and dark red blood and I didn’t know it was anything but “normal”. I’ve been pale and fatigued with anemia because I lost too much, but, again, it was “normal”. I’ve long been fascinated with female anatomy, the womb, menstrual cycle, and fetal development, but I didn’t know how amazing it was to L I V E from the womb. But, I’ve learned. 🔻From womb to womb ~ 4 generations 🔻 This summer we travelled to Belgium to present our little girl to my grandmother. (91 years old) Little Rosalinde Madeleine meeting great grandmother Madeleine. Named as a Madeleine, as an honoring of this incredible strong woman, and the lineage she and I come from. Named after Sylvestres grandmother as well, also a Madeleine. Name after the Mary Magdalene cathedral here in Vezelay, where I felt a spirit daughter was on her way. Holding Rosalinde together in our 6 arms & hands felt so precious & magical! Four women, all so connected by blood and bones, yet so different and unique in their own way. The paths we walk so unalike, yet rooted in a connectedness. Like roots of a forest intertwined beneath the soil. A thought that always strikes me is that we as women were already in our grandmothers womb. I was carried in my grandmothers body, as a little egg in the ovaries of the unborn baby that was my mum. So was Rosalinde already (partly) in my mum's womb when I was a baby. A womb within a womb within a womb. Formed by their life experiences, emotions and thoughts. Part of my DNA was formed by what my grandmother experienced during world war II. Part of Rosalindes DNA is influenced by the 60's movement of freedom. Isn't that fascinating? The unravelling of ancestral wisdom, but also trauma that has been passed on from generation to generation is such a deep & rich journey. As much as I honour my ancestral and especially female bloodline, I also feel there is a lot of healing needed. A cutting of cords and breaking of feminine wounds & suppression. A task for every generation of daughters to continue. A web thats never finished weaving. Merriam Webster 1828 defines life as a "state of an organized being, in which its natural functions and motions are performed, or in which its organs are capable of performing their functions." While, Britannica defines life as "any system capable of performing functions such as eating, metabolizing, excreting, breathing, moving, growing, reproducing, and responding to external stimuli." Both these sources support that life begins at conception. By simply 4 weeks of growth in the womb a baby's heart has had over 1 million beats. Becoming the Motherland~ pregnany & birth changes everything. All of a sudden your body doesn't belong only to you anymore. You become the Motherland. For a newborn baby the body of the mother is all there exist. You are their world. You are everything. There isn't any separation. So often people forget that once a baby is born, the union between mother and child is still there. The umbilical cord is cut and physically a mothers body is separated from that of her baby, her body remains the motherland. Imagine again...that for 9 months the sound of your mothers heartbeat, her breathing, her voice is all you hear & feel. We forget how terrifying it must be if all of a sudden all that safety falls away, and you are born in world full of light, sounds, people...Then imagine being put alone in a little crib, in a separate room, without the warmth of a mother. I would be scared and cry. I would feel left alone & abandoned. I would think the world would have extinguished and I would die. Therefore, I keep Rosalinde close. Close to the motherland. Skin to skin, head on my heart. So she can slowly explore the world beyond the motherland, but always return when she needs the comfort of familiar territory. Belonging to this earth requires time & reassurance. I often think that every modern invention to make our life more practical is a forgetting of the closeness we as humans need. And little babies remind us of what we truly need to belong, feel connected and safe. Its presence, closeness and unconditional love. Forget (baby) phones, cribs and formula milk in a bottle.
