Listening "Story Of Wind Behind Left = 風の遺した物語" by Masahiko Togashi (1975, Columbia – YQ-7515-N). My copy is the 2023 vinyl by Cinedelic Records (2023, CNLP68, On Records Japan). Recorded on September 2, 3 and 5, 1975 at Nippon Columbia 1st Studio. According to the OBI, this version released by Cinedelic Records comes from the original master tapes, and is licensed by Nippon Columbia. It is also available on bandcamp, and in regular stores. Many important names from the Japanese free jazz scene have been part of the session. Under the leadership of Togashi, we find for example well-known figures like Mototeru Takagi and Sabu Toyozumi. The original linernotes are translated into English. The album has been recorded just after "Song For Myself" and "Spiritual Nature" on East Wind, is in line with these works, and retraces the unique journey of the percussionist. Free jazz album that seems less easily available than the albums mentioned previously. Those who appreciate "Song For Myself" or "Spiritual Nature" will appreciate "Story Of Wind Behind Left" as much. The album is available on YouTube. Listening "WaJazz: Japanese Jazz Spectacle, Volume II - Deep, Heavy and Beautiful Jazz from Japan 1962-1985 - The King Records Masters - Selected by Yusuke Ogawa (Universounds)". Excerpts are on bandcamp, but due to copyrights, no digital download is available. The second volume in this series was highly anticipated, and is currently sold out on bandcamp (wajazz.bandcamp.com). Here, Japanese jazz expert Yusuke Ogawa-san @univerogawa continues the WaJazz exploration with a collection of Japanese jazz music. The first volume explored the catalog of Nippon Columbia. On this second volume, we are invited to listen to the King Records label, founded in 1931, with two 180g LPs, featuring "the works of some of the leading jazz musicians who created the foundations of the Japanese jazz scene". Another fantastic production, with linernotes written in English and Japanese. We learn about the outstanding contributions of the King Records label, as well as a description of important works. Artists include Toshiaki Yokota and The Beat Generation, Tadao Sawai, Toshiyuki Miyama & New Yerd, Akira Miyazawa, Masahiko Togashi with Isao Suzuki, Takeru Muraoka, Yasuaki Shimizu, George Otsuka, etc. Overall, in this Wajazz Series, twelve tracks were selected. Personally, I only knew about a half of the titles on this compilation, and Japanese jazz aficionados will recognize "Loving You George" by the George Otsuka Quintet, or even the fabulous "Yamame" by Akira Miyazawa. Horace Silver's "Sayonara Blues", played by Hideo Shiraki, taken from "plays Bossa Nova", another strong moment. On this album, Sugimoto bridges the post-bop and fusion divide. 2022 has been a year of Japanese records and musicians— hearing this album back in April/May of this year definitely made me start appreciating post-bop and jazz-rock/funk to fusion. Had another listen to this Japanese post-bop classic earlier this week. This is the leader debut for prolific Japanese tenor Takeru Muraoka, at this point already well known from his sideman work for Terumasa Hino and Akira Ishikawa's Count Buffaloes. The keywords here are spareness and interplay, with the quartet exhibiting tantalizing restraint and mutual respect, ready to turn on a dime even during the most frenetic moments. Take Easy Ridin', buoyed by Yoshio Ikeda's insistent bass ostinato, over which Muraoka blows skeletal tenor phrases, with aptly timed punctuations from pianist Masabumi Kikuchi and drummer George Otsuka. There's also a killer version of Electric Zoo here, which Muraoka debutted in a rocking rendition on Terumasa Hino's landmark Hi-Nology the year before. Here it's equally driving but a bit more stripped back, haunting, pregnant with possibility - not unlike the work of Miles' second great quintet. Yoshio Ikeda Quintet - Sketches of My Life (Seven Seas - SKS-3002(s)) - Killer modal workout with Ikeda on bass, Motohiko Hino on drums, Ali Takase on piano, Suetoshi Shimizu on sax, and Ichiko Hashimoto with ghostly vocals. Whispering Weeds is a killer track very much in the vein of spiritual jazz, but even more propulsive than most thanks to a very forward rhythm section. Rapids has some great moments of wild improvisation. The recording is also top notch. Masahiko Togashi Quartet - Speed & Space (Union UPS-2014-J) - One of three powerful free jazz recordings Togashi made in 1969, Speed & Space is an intense landmark in Japanese jazz. A year later Togashi had a car accident and had to quit music until a special drum set was built for him. Not for the faint of heart. The sound is great, in part because of the use of the Neumann Sx68 cutterhead.
