Cultural Vibe is a pseudonym of the lesser-known producer Winston Jones, who alongside the more familiar name of Paul Simpson, would formulate a new sound post the disco era. The pair first worked together on “Use Me, Lose Me”, a 1982 Paradise Garage favourite credited to the Paul Simpson Connection. The track was released on @arthurhbaker’s Streetwise Records, is a post-disco classic and widely considered an early blueprint for the “garage sound”. By 1984, Simpson and Jones had discovered a new love for synthesizers and drum machines. They began to push the boundaries of electrofunk, making their productions increasingly dubbed-out and reverb heavy. This lead to the creation of Serious Intention’s “You Don’t Know”, a benchmark in proto-garage, and some would argue, proto-house. (Also check out their 1984 release - Pushé’s “Don’t Take Your Love Away”.) “Ma Foom Bey” personifies this sound, with its electronic drum pattern, vibraphone solos, and that distinctive chant, expertly edited by Humphries. Recently reworked very nicely by @djmichaelgrayofficial.
