Since the tightened COVID measures in 2020, my family bought glass food containers to bring our food home. Yes, they are heavy and we need to wash them, but we have contributed less to the waste that would have otherwise been generated over the last four years. How many times do you dabao (do take aways) a week? Multiply that by 52 and you'll get your amount of plastic waste. The recent weather patterns are just one of many consequences we reap from our insatiable consumption and the subsequent mountains of waste. *Salvage is not a dirty word* A couple of weeks ago, I went to a music studio that was shutting its doors, to pick up a tool they were giving away, that I had always wanted. I took the train and walked from the station, some 800m _in_the_scorching_SG_sun. NGL, it was painful. Sometimes I wonder why I bother. But the person giving away the items was nice and said I could take anything I was interested in. I ended up taking the tool that I came for, a working non-stream iron which I gave @thesustainabilityproject_ for their beeswax wrap workshops, and two cutting mats that I passed to the @HVlittlelibrary sewing group. The person giving the items away and I chatted as I was recovering from the heat, and after learning about the Tinkerbox, she offered me some fabric remnants that I said yes to. I have three new pretty prints 😍 I was willing to invest the time to do this but it takes so much effort and energy that sometimes, I wonder if it's worth it. A few days ago, I saw someone salvaging LEGO dumped outside the recycling bin; she felt compelled to explain her actions to me like she was embarrassed but I think salvaging something you deem to have value is a positive thing, whether it's fabric someone's giving away or LEGO someone doesn't want anymore. The Tinkerbox is proud to use #foundfabric in products and sew-your-own workshops. And since I keep salvaging stuff, I guess I find it worthwhile beyond capitalist calculations of value. Spent two hours harvesting compost made within garden mesh, grow bags, and everyday containers (including a baby's pool). The compost has been made by librarians and volunteers at Jurong Regional Library. I have been training / mentoring them since July last year. The compost heaps have been left untouched for some weeks and were quite dry. It was amazing to see the dark crumbly compost inside the heaps, and the many soil organisms living with them! We saw earthworms, sowbugs, millipedes, and garden roaches. Some of the harvested compost looked like little dark balls, and others looked more like large chunks of cake or brownie. We harvested enough to fill 3/4 of a tall grow bag. Some of the compost were used to grow shallots, and transplant stem cuttings. --- p/s: If you are interested in a customised training for your family, friends or colleagues, I conduct workshops via @foodcitizensg, an educational venture that I co-create with Chingwei and Miriam. A new limited collection from @sundaybedding bedlinen remnants Hey guys! This post has been a long time in the making so I'm pleased to announce I'm launching a limited collection of reusable snack baggies and soap keepers made from Sunday Bedding's French Linen remnants at @castlerysg this weekend, 12-14 April. The snack baggies will come in 7 colourways – Dusty Plum, Sand Shell, Cloud Grey, Misty Blue, Sage Green, Olive Green and Nautical Blue – and the soap keepers are made with coordinating remnants from the remnants. I also have some scrappie scrunchies made from incredibly soft Sunday Bedding bamboo rayon. In line with the minimalist aesthetic and clean simplicity of both Sunday Bedding and Castlery, I decided that this range needed its own display. Yesterday, I shopped my studio supply and made a free-standing display stand from two pegboards and an old hinge. I'm a big fan of Sunday Bedding and I use their linen range of bedlinen at home because I love the relaxed, slouchy look that somehow still looks put-together even if the bed isn't made to hotel standards. The Tinkerbox snack baggies are made from a pretty printed cotton exterior and a certified food-safe polyurethane interior. It is waterproof and greaseproof so you can take awy snacks and enjoy them on-the-go without single-use cling wrap, plastic bags, or aluminium foil. It can be used with hot and cold food, and placed in the fridge or freezer. You can even use it to take cut watermelon with you and the juices will stay contained inside. After conducting workshops at preschools, Food Citizens are delighted to return to secondary schools to teach one of our most-requested topics: composting unconsumed food! We are glad to revisit one school for the third consecutive year. This time, some of the students will be diving into research projects, and they specifically asked to learn about compost microbial life. Co-creator Chingwei (@thursdaylang) has been training to be a certified soil food web consultant, and she spent many hours peering at microbial life in soil and compost under the microscope. At the school workshop, she shared fascinating examples of microbial life that she observed in locally-made compost. One notable discovery was how there was lots of microbial life in what appeared to be only partially composted material that we collected from a school. It was heartwarming to witness educators learning alongside their students. *The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step* A couple of weeks ago, I unearthed my old camera, charged it, and found that the LCD had deteriorated. A quick Google brought up a video of someone replacing the screen and I figured why not and bought a replacement LCD. After all, the warranty had run out, it wasn't functional, and @panasonicsg said my camera was too old (Dec 2013) and they didn't carry parts anymore. I watched the video tutorial a few times, opened it up and replaced the screen. Long story short, the screen remained unconnected but thanks to the amazing community that is @hvlittlelibrary, we connected the LCD, saved my camera from becoming wasted e-waste, and I learnt how to correctly insert flex cables from @jackyamthemidnightgardener who has way more experience than me. I was so chuffed that I grabbed the custom order of onigiri pantyliners on my sewing table and started shooting; the shots turned out great even though they were taken at night! When I decided to replace my camera's LCD myself, I knew there'd be a chance it wouldn't work but the possibility of using my camera again outweighed the fear of 🤬ing it up. It's simpler to live with "this is the way I've always done it" than try something unknown but sometimes amazing things happen, though sometimes they don't happen immediately. If you've been wondering (and perhaps also worried) about reusable cloth period products, it's something you just have to try for yourself. There is no judgment if you decide it's not for you, or if you want to use reusables only on certain days or if you want to go with another brand. Special mention also to @keepsgclean for setting up CleanPods where we could borrow beach cleanup tools for our event, and @stridyapp which we used to log data on marine litter :) Did you know? @msesingapore and @nea_sg have designated 2024 as the Year of Public Hygiene, highlighting the collective effort that is required to keep Singapore clean and green. Over the past year, I've visited cutting-edge research facilities pushing the boundaries in sustainability - from extracting valuable materials from e-waste like lithium batteries to advancing water recycling technologies that transform wastewater into valuable resources for the F&B and chemical industries. Facilities like TuasNexus also exemplifies innovation, where the co-location and integration of solid waste and used water treatment enable more efficient and space-saving resource recovery. As we mark the International Day of Zero Waste today, we must remember that the drive towards zero waste is not just about advanced R&D, it is a collective responsibility. One that calls on each of us to adopt a mindset of reduction and reuse, and use more green products. On this International Day of Zero Waste, we're reminded of the global call to action to rethink our consumption and production patterns. In Singapore, our ambitious waste reduction targets aim for a 70% overall recycling rate and a 30% reduction in the per capita daily waste sent to our landfill by 2030. What does the waste-to-landfill target mean for each individual? Currently, each person disposes of 800g of waste per day. To meet our 30% reduction target, we need to decrease our daily waste to 640g per person by 2030. This is equivalent to reducing our waste by about 30 bananas or 15 glass bottles per month! To reduce waste, we can start by recycling items like glass bottles, using reusable containers and bags, and avoiding single-use plastics. Composting food waste and donating items we no longer need are also great ways to minimise our landfill contribution. What are your tips for reducing waste? Over the last decade, food waste in Singapore has increased by 20%, and it makes up about half of the average 1.5kg of waste produced by each household daily. Backed by the National Youth Council, social enterprise @mono.foods was started by a team of young co-founders that hopes to inspire all Singaporeans to adopt more responsible practices in reducing food waste. The team is dedicated to raising awareness among consumers about the safety and usability of food items beyond their best-before dates, and they actively salvage surplus edible food and redirect it to underserved communities. If you want to play a part in promoting food sustainability, you can join them as a volunteer by supporting the operations at their physical store, participating in public events to educate on food wastage, or even helping out at their food donation drives. We’ve been tweaking our diet to incorporate more vegetarian food - for both health and sustainability reasons. A few weeks ago, our barbecue consisted of 2 grills, and we dedicated one of them just for veges. There are so many delicious options - zucchini, capsicums, mushrooms, corn, sweet potatoes, asparagus, pumpkins. 🎃🥒🍠🌽 They’re already a feast on their own! The added convenience of minimal prep - just slice before you put them on the grill - is definitely extra sweet! We still had meat skewers on the other grill - but it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. If I am unable to be a full vegetarian now, changing the ratio of plant-based foods to meat is still a good start. Both for moderating cholesterol and reducing carbon footprint. 😋

Buying and selling pre-loved stuff is one of the ways we can cut down our carbon footprint. Today, we met another couple who is into sustainability, and bought a loft bed from us. They set out on the challenging task of moving the bed frame, and after lots of Chinese puzzle-style dismantling and Tetris-style maneuvering, they very successfully fit it all into a van! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for effort! It was really heartwarming to meet like-minded and positive people through the sale of our bed. I hope the bed will bring their daughter as much joy as ours had in it!
Happy to chance meet Nas and her three older children at my estate's community garden this morning! Although we have been in touch via FB and IG, and via my neighbours who helped to transport used tea dust from her home, our last in-person meeting was before the pandemic... It was nice to see her children so excited to see the flowers, butterflies and all. Thankful that they got to meet with my neighbour Steven, who's our resident butterfly enthusiast. He single-handedly identified ~90 butterfly species in the community garden, and ~100 butterfly species in the estate! The tea dust that Nas brings is very fragrant.
