This colorful and dynamic composition is a trademark of #LibbieMark’s #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePainting work, as is the vertical format. Hard to see in photos, though we try to share detail shots, Mark’s surfaces are multi-layered with paint and tissue paper to create depth and texture that can most be appreciated in person. Between 1963 and 1967, #LibbieMark exhibited in five #Vectors group shows with one of the founding Vectors members, painter #BenWilson (1913-2001). Wilson also exhibited at #KnapikGallery in 1962, the same year the gallery presented Libbie’s only solo show during her lifetime. #MontclairStateUniversity holds a collection of Wilson’s paintings gifted by the Ben and Evelyn Wilson Foundation, a number of which were exhibited in 2017 in a show curated by #JasonRosenfeld at the @Montclairstategalleries. Wilson’s papers are also in the collection of the #ArchivesOfAmericanArt. Here are two paintings by each artist from this time period of the mid-1960s, demonstrating both of the artists’ unique styles of #AbstractExpressionism: 1. In this last week of #WomensARTHistoryMonth, looking back at #LibbieMark’s early history…her first art courses were with another #WomanArtist, #BettyHollidayDeckoff, at the #GreatNeckAdultEducation fine arts program on Long Island. As Libbie’s dedication to her art became more serious, her husband supported, encouraged, and cooperated with her to advance her artistic development by relocating to New York City, so she could enroll at the #ArtStudentsLeague, where she studied from 1956 to 1958. #VaclavVytlacil - who also taught Deckoff (we can assume that Deckoff connected them) - taught Libbie. Vytlacil then supported and encouraged Mark to apply for #HansHofmann’s summer courses in Provincetown, which she did...and the rest is #HerArtHistory. Please see links in bio for email list signup, @BerryCampbell gallery rep, and the Libbie Mark website where you can read more about this important female artist. Continuing the #WomensARTHistoryMonth theme...Around 1959 @LibbieMarkArtist was photographed in her painting studio in New York by another #FemaleArtist who deserves more attention: #DinahRubinstein (known simply as #Dena). Dena also photographed other artists such as #DorothyDehner #WillemDeKooning #RobertMotherwell #LouiseNevelson #JackTworkov and #AndyWarhol. Her #PortraitsOfArtists are in the collections such as the #ArchivesOfAmericanArt and the #ArtInstituteOfChicago.   Environmental portraits like these of #LibbieMark, are so interesting because they give viewers a peek into how and where she worked. They are also the only known images of her working. In the early 1960s Mark rented a studio unit in which to paint, which was located in the 176 East 71st building where she and her husband, Edward, lived in another unit.   Please see links in bio for email list signup, @BerryCampbell gallery rep, and the Libbie Mark website where you can read more about this important female artist. Happy #WomensHistoryMonth! (We call it #WomensARTHistoryMonth around here). #LibbieMark was a member of the New York-based #VectorsArtistGroup, which featured a majority of #FemaleArtists through its existence in the late 1950s to late 1960s — unusual for the times. Notably, seven of the 10 original 1957 members were women, and in 8 of 9 exhibitions documented with listed participants, over 50% were female! Other #WomanArtist #Vectors members were: Sophie Corwin, #HelenGerardia, Mary Heisig, #AnneHelioff, Frances Manacher, Sylvia Rutkoff, #MaryShaier, #RhodaSklar, Ida Somkin, #MiriamSommerburg, #EthelStein, and #EvelynWilson. Mark exhibited this #AbstractPainting in the October 1967 11th Annual Vectors Exhibition. It’s me again, @JenniferUhrhane, curator for the #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund. I am thrilled to announce that #LibbieMark will be having her first solo exhibition at @BerryCampbell gallery this May! On view from May 24–June 22, Libbie’s #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePaintings will be shown in part of #BerryCampbell’s huge gallery space, alongside another important female artist peer. This is another big step forward in my goal, working for the LMPF, to bring more attention to this artist and to place her work in private and public institutions. More details to follow in the coming months. Be informed about upcoming Libbie Mark happenings, like the opening reception, by following @LibbieMarkArtist. You can sign up for our mailing list with the link in her bio. Please share this news! Hard to believe but, it has been a year since the opening reception of “Women and Abstraction: 1741–Now” at @AddisonGalleryOfAmericanArt! #WomenAndAbstraction explored a more nuanced and expansive history of the development of abstraction in America…how women have deployed the visual language and universal formal concerns of abstraction—color, line, form, shape, contrast, pattern, and texture—to create works of art across a wide variety of media. We were thrilled that Addison curator @GordonWilkins included a #LibbieMark #CollagePainting in this exhibition, and acquired it for the Addison’s collection. Did you know that the #AddisonGallery has extensive documentation of past exhibitions on their website? You can take a virtual tour, view installation photos, and learn about all of the works in the show here: www.addison.andover.edu/exhibition/women-and-abstraction/ Please swipe for more images, and click link in bio for more info on Libbie Mark, gallery rep @BerryCampbell, and the Addison exhibition page. The #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund has been telling Libbie’s story through this Instagram account as well as her website www.libbiemark.com with the goal that more attention is paid to her and other underrecognized #FemaleArtists. #JenniferUhrhane here, the #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund curator...my husband and I recently spent a chilly artsy long weekend in #Provincetown…this trip was mainly to visit the #ProvincetownArtAssociationAndMuseum to see the recent gifts show featuring a new @LibbieMarkArtist #CollagePainting (!) but I also visited a few galleries that were open off-season. I met with #PAAM CEO #ChrisMcCarthy who spent about an hour with us walking us through all of their shows, pointing out key pieces/artists and telling us about this important institution and its history. This painting has bits of a #CapeCod newspaper collaged into the surface, which is one of the reasons why we chose this piece to go to @paam1914. Chris told me she was thrilled to open the packaging and see how textural the painting was. If you look closely, you can see bits of a tide chart, the phrase “Ptown boys” and a sentence for which you might try helping us fill in the blanks: “...Provincetown around the turn of the century when ... -ing a perch on an unfortunate beached black- ... -ay, with a hand organ and a monkey.” Suggestions, anyone? Please visit “Recent Gifts to the Permanent Collection,” now extended to this Sunday, February 11! It may be small but it packs a VERY colorful punch, holding its own on a big white wall at #BerryCampbellGallery... #LibbieMark’s untitled #CollagePainting is juxtaposed here with another punchy painting, appropriately titled “Wham” by @JudithWhitneyGodwin. Here is another view of Libbie‘s painting with her daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Michael Tanur, along with #ChristineBerry, co-director of @BerryCampbell. On view at Berry Campbell until February 3, this painting is part of “Perseverance,” a curated group exhibition of 29 paintings and works on paper by cross-generational women artists reflecting #BerryCampbell’s steadfast dedication to the rediscovery and advancement of #WomenArtists and centers on the ongoing aesthetic dialogues between contemporary artists and estates represented by the gallery. [text adapted from Berry Campbell’s press release] On a wall opposite the room where Libbie’s painting hangs is a great quote: “It is said that the future is female, and one can only hope. But it is important to remember that the past, through continuous excavation, is becoming more female all the time.” — #RobertaSmith, 2021 If you are in NYC, be sure to stop by Berry Campbell; their hours are Tues -Sat, 10am - 6pm or by appointment. Two years ago this week, the first solo show of #LibbieMark’s work in 60 years opened at the gorgeous @NationalArtsClub in NYC. This posthumous exhibition, “Art of the Abstract Mark: Libbie Mark’s Collage Paintings and Other Works, 1950s–1960s,” featured 27 of the artist’s textural #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePaintings. @RobertSeyffert and @YahnerRobert of the NAC and @JenniferUhrhane curator for the #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund contributed to the full-color 60-page catalogue. It was beautifully designed by #MichaelJBabcock of #InterrobangLetterpress and is still available for purchase from our website (link in bio). #JenniferUhrhane and #JoanMarter did a gallery talk for this show as well (link in bio). #LibbieMark was a member of the New York-based #Vectors, a fascinating but understudied #ArtistsGroup. Vectors featured a majority of #WomenArtists through its 10-year history in the 1950s-1960s. Mark began exhibiting with the group in about 1963. Two other #FemaleArtists in the Vectors are represented among 19 works from the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum’s permanent collection in its upcoming #GeometricAbstraction exhibition! #HelenGerardia was a founding Vectors member, exhibiting in the #ArtistGroup’s first show in 1957. By about 1964 #AnneHelioff was a participating member along with Mark and Gerardia. From the @WAAMArt press release: “While artists of the Woodstock Art Colony are best known for their idyllic landscape paintings, many 20th century artists of the region experimented with new movements in Modern art that began in European cities and evolved in New York. In this exhibition, line, shape and color dominate the frame.” www.woodstockart.org/geometric-abstraction/ Please swipe for images of Helioff’s and Gerardia’s #AbstractPaintings in the #WAAMArt show; the last image is one of four #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePaintings that Mark exhibited in the October 1967 11th Annual Vectors Exhibition. We wanted to share with you highlights from the exhibition brochure for #ProvincetownArtAssociationAndMuseum’s current exhibition “Recent Gifts to the Permanent Collection.” #LibbieMark’s newly acquired #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePainting is featured on the cover! On view November 17, 2023 – January 28, 2024, “This exhibition features work that was gifted to the museum throughout 2023 from both first-time and continuing donors. Pieces range in styles and subject matters, from Abstract Expressionism to digital photography to the iconic Provincetown woodblock print. One of the rooms in this exhibition focuses on female artists. Some, such as the work of #AliciaHenry, @mira_schor, and @skypowerart, may look familiar, as they were exhibited in solo shows at PAAM throughout 2023. First-time acquisitions by PAAM include the work of Libbie Mark, an Abstract Expressionist artist who studied with #HansHofmann in Provincetown, and @jesstdugan, a contemporary photographer who explores issues of gender and identity through portraiture... PAAM is proud of the opportunities to acquire and exhibit both historic and contemporary female artists who have made such significant impacts on Provincetown art history.” —@PAAM1914 CEO Chris McCarthy Please follow @LibbieMarkArtist and share the news! #LibbieMark’s first #ArtStudentsLeague session with #VaclavVytlacil began in early December 1956 and lasted through the spring of 1958 (with a 1957 summer hiatus in Provincetown at the #HansHofmannSchoolOfFineArts). It was Mark’s first formal art training in New York City, so Mark and her husband temporarily rented an apartment there so she could take classes at the @AslNyc. They permanently relocated from Great Neck, Long Island to New York to be closer to the city’s art scene by 1958. We recently posted about one of #LibbieMark's #CollagePaintings entering the permanent collection of the #ProvincetownArtAssociationAndMuseum. The artist’s Provincetown experience was pivotal for her work, beginning in the summer of 1957 when she studied with #HansHofmann. No doubt inspired by the creative environment of this important arts colony, Mark painted there every summer until her last in 1971. The #AbstractExpressionist #LibbieMarkPainting shown here is included in @PAAM1914's current exhibition "Recent Gifts to the Permanent Collection" on view through January 28. Please swipe for an exhibition installation view, showing Libbie's work in the company of works by other important female artists (left to right): @SkyPowerArt, #MaudMorgan, #LibbieMarkArtist, #JudithRothschild, and #MaryArmstrong. The exhibition is one of two gift group shows on view at the museum. In addition, on view is a recent gift solo show of #JoSandman's work, and PAAM's members' shows. Libbie previously exhibited with a few of these artists, including @JoSandmanArtist, in recent exhibitions at the @AddisonGalleryofAmericanArt and @RosenbergAndCo. Please visit PAAM, lots to see! image 1: Untitled Collage Painting, 1960s. Acrylic and paper collage on canvas, 30 x 24 in. © Libbie Mark Provincetown Fund, Inv. no. 25J. Today’s post is all about fun and interesting things found in #LibbieMark's archive. Photos of an exhibition, written correspondence, show postcards...all are important clues to an artist's working life, especially if they are no longer with us. In #LibbieMarkArtist's case, she passed away in 1972 so there is only so much we can glean from people who knew her when she was alive. Please swipe to see a selection of archival material held by the #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund and see captions for more details about these items. #ArtistAchives are important! I visited MoMA last week to see the exhibition ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN. Upper case because this show was amazingly good. It’s a 200-work retrospective of Ruscha’s groundbreaking career: the books, the paintings, even the room made of chocolate (and I DO love chocolate). The artist worked in series for decades, often with words and language, and the early large triangular compositions of streamlined and stylized gas stations were outstanding. Don’t miss the show—open until January 13th in New York, then in Los Angeles at LACMA starting April 7th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . @EdRuscha @EdRuschaNowThen @MuseumOfModernArt @MoMA @LACMA #StandardOil #GasStations #PopArt #1960sPainting #ArtAdvisors #The_APAA #SATW

#JenniferUhrhane, LMPF curator here...Sharing exciting news today on behalf of my artist estate client, #LibbieMark! The #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund just donated one of her #CollagePaintings to the #ProvincetownArtAssociationAndMuseum! The artist’s Provincetown experience was pivotal for her work, beginning in 1957 with her time at the #HansHofmannSchool. She painted every summer on Cape Cod from then on, through her last in 1971, less than a year before her death. Her husband Edward always said that their summers in Provincetown were “for her.” Reflecting Libbie’s connection to Provincetown, this piece even has a Cape/Provincetown newspaper collaged into the surface. LMPF has also committed a significant promised gift of another Provincetown piece to #PAAM, the only painting that we are aware of directly referencing Libbie’s summer course with #HansHofmann. It is dated “1957-HH” on verso. A striking figurative abstract work, it was exhibited last year in "Art of the Abstract Mark: Libbie Mark’s Collage Paintings and Other Works" at the @NationalArtsClub in New York. Please swipe to see both works. Mark's newly donated #AbstractExpressionist collage painting (first image) will also be included in @PAAM1914's exhibition "Recent Gifts to the Permanent Collection" featuring work by important female artists. On view November 17, 2023 – January 28, 2024, the public opening reception is Friday, November 17 at 6:00 pm. It is thrilling to have Libbie represented at this amazing museum! Thank you to PAAM CEO #ChrisMcCarthy and the board for understanding the importance of these works for their collection! Please follow @LibbieMarkArtist and share the news! A dark and moody #LibbieMark painting on this first week of winter daylight saving time. Are you pro or con abolishing "spring forward, fall back"? This oil on canvas (unusually: not acrylic and not a #CollagePainting!) was painted sometime between 1958-1962, a period of great production and experimentation for the artist. Even though this piece does not feature any collage elements, it has great #SurfaceTexture due to her utilizing some additional tools beyond her brush to move the media around on the canvas...scraping and pulling the thick paint to create this sketchy quality. A preview of her signature collage paintings to come, perhaps. Please swipe for details plus the verso (because it is always interesting to see what's on the back!) In the late 1950s-early 1960s #LibbieMark created a handful of small #AbstractExpressionist ink and acrylic works, mostly on paper. They seem to be influenced by artists such as #FranzKline, #RobertMotherwell, or #JacksonPollock at a time when she would have been looking at other artists’ techniques, taking courses at the #ArtStudentsLeague and with #HansHofmann, and still developing her own visual voice. They are small but beautiful! Please see links in bio for website where you can view many more #LibbieMarkArtist works, sign up for our email list, and please visit gallery rep @BerryCampbell. #LibbieMark was a member of the #Vectors, a remarkably understudied but fascinating New York #ArtistsGroup. So far, research shows a membership list spanning 10 years and consisting of 23 artists, including 2married couples. Despite turnover, the group featured strong female representation. Notably, 7 of the original 1957 roster of 10 were women, and in 8 of 9 exhibitions documented with listed participants, over 50% were female! This is especially meaningful at a time when women were not as recognized or given as much exposure as men (a recurring problem). To date, we have confirmed that Libbie participated in 5 Vectors shows between Jan 1963 and Oct 1967. Her archive, held by the #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund, contains an announcement for their 1964 “8th Annual Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture” held at #NewYorkUniversity; this was the first documentation found of #LibbieMarkArtist’s membership in the group. We also have records of the #AbstractExpressionist paintings included in the Vectors 1967 “Eleventh Annual Exhibition.” Please swipe to view the 1957, 1964 and 1967 exhibition postcards and one of her #CollagePainting s from the ’67 show, recently placed in a private collection by gallery rep @BerryCampbell. This beautiful work is one of over thirty #AbstractExpressionist #CollagePaintings that #LibbieMark exhibited in her solo show "Libbie Mark: Paintings and Collages" at the former #KnapikGallery in NYC in May-June 1962. An atypical #AbstractPainting for the artist, but no less strong or striking, it is a rare horizontal format and features a softer palette than many of her works. This piece is supported by significant archival info. It has a 1962 Knapik Gallery solo exhibition number label on its original wood strip frame, and artist and work info labels on verso. It is also shown in surviving installation photos and the pricelist for the show. For further reading, her website libbiemark.com has an essay about this solo show. Tomorrow, on September 13, Libbie Mark, née Berman, was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1905. While living in Great Neck, NY, Mark enrolled in courses at the #GreatNeckAdultEducation fine arts program, known for its significant artist faculty such as #NellBlaine, @HelenFrankenthalerFoundation, #GraceHartigan, @Louise.Nevelson, #FairfieldPorter, and @LarryRiversFoundation. In the mid-late 1950s once her kids were off to college, #LibbieMarkArtist and her husband Edward relocated to NYC where she studied with #VaclavVytlacil at the @AslNyc #ArtStudentsLeague. Vytlacil encouraged her to study with #HansHofmann in Provincetown in 1957. #LibbieMark continued to paint in her NY studio and spend summers in Provincetown until 1971. She painted until her death in 1972 at age 66. Mark created an important body of innovative paintings with her own unique take on #AbstractExpressionism and collage. Also this week: your last chance to see Libbie Mark's collage paintings and other works by great #WomenArtists in "Collage: Selections from Post-War Women," a gorgeous show at @RosenbergAndCo that closes on Friday, September 15. @JenniferUhrhane here, curator for the #LibbieMarkProvincetownFund...What is your favorite #LibbieMark painting and why? I am featuring one of my favorites today. It is one of Mark's smallest at 6 x 4 inches(!) but still packs a significant color punch. This is likely from the late 50s, perhaps after completing her studies with #HansHofmann in Provincetown and #VaclavVytlacil at the #ArtStudentsLeague. Still feeling her way around, Mark seemed to be experimenting with others’ styles, and hadn’t yet settled on her own signature #CollagePainting technique. This is one of the few surviving Mark works on paper. Like a few others from the late 50s, it has a bit of a #JacksonPollock #DripPainting quality. But it also hints at the #LibbieMarkArtist of the future, with its heavily vertical format, sophisticated sense of color (that tiny pop of green at the top!!), and layers of texture...in this case achieved purely by the application of shapes and lines in paint - nothing else is worked into the surface. What is your favorite Mark painting and why? Please message us, and we will feature the work in a future post along with some fascinating tidbits about it. @RosenbergAndCo shared with us some installation views of #LibbieMark's paintings in "Collage: Selections from Post-War Women," an important show on view until September 15. Here shown with a few of her better-known peers, Mark's recognition is growing as an innovative member of New York’s #AbstractExpressionist art world. From the press release: "Through the work of these seminal artists, the exhibition examines the nature of collage as a medium and asserts the technique's role in the disruptive dialogues that occurred in post-war art...the exhibition celebrates the technique’s edifying potential and recognizes the artists that utilized the medium while contributing to the social, and artistic, developments of the post war period." My girl , @vintagejitterbug , introduced me to this little Downey gem not too long ago and I was so in love with the interior. You know that I’m a total Italia-boo and it was sooo cute in there. I was especially in love with all the paintings ! 🖼️👩🏻‍🎨 So since they are closing down after being in business since 1964, they were selling the paintings !! I snagged the last good one (in my opinion) and I’m so happy! These were original to the restaurant since 1964 ❤️ I feel very grateful to own a little piece of Frantone’s history… now I can stare at The Pantheon from the comfort of my own home 🇮🇹 #frantones #frantonespizza #frantonesdowney #frantonespizzaandspaghettivilla #1960s #1960spainting

Reposting @RosenbergCo's lovely #LibbieMark Insta story profile from last week: Libbie Mark (1905-1972) was an American #AbstractExpressionist artist, best known for incorporating collage within her paintings, exemplifying a mastery of texture and composition. Libbie Berman was born in 1905 in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1927, she married Edward Mark, and the couple resided in her hometown before relocating to Great Neck, New York in 1939. Throughout her artistic education, Mark painted in a variety of styles, however, by the mid-1950s, Mark had firmly shifted to working in an Abstract Expressionist manner. In the later half of the 1950’s, Mark attended #VaclavVytlacil’s classes at the #ArtStudentsLeague, a summer course with #HansHofmann in Provincetown, MA, and relocated to New York City to further her artistic career. A singular, but positively reviewed, solo exhibition of Mark’s work was held during her lifetime in 1962. The exhibition took place at the #KnapikGallery, in which Mark debuted the collage painting technique that ultimately became her signature style. By the mid-1960s, Mark worked almost exclusively in her #CollagePainting style, in which she incorporated paper and other materials into acrylic paint, applied to paper, masonite, or canvas to create heavily textured surfaces. In the years following her solo exhibition, Mark continued to cultivate her unique style and participated in a number of group shows with the #Vectors—an #ArtistGroup that featured majority female membership. Despite being largely unacknowledged during her lifetime, Mark’s innovative use of collage provides a landmark in examining the development of the technique within #AbstractExpressionism. Works by Libbie Mark are available to view in our current exhibition, "Collage: Selections From Post-War Women Artists." Through the work of these seminal artists, the exhibition examines the nature of collage as a medium and asserts the technique's role in the disruptive dialogues that occurred in post-war art...Several art movements are highlighted, in particular, #AbstractExpressionism, which makes a case for the connection between collage and abstraction, while emphasizing the devalued role of women artists within the movement...the exhibition celebrates the technique’s edifying potential and recognizes the artists that utilized the medium while contributing to the social, and artistic, developments of the post war period."
