Earlier this week, Erin and Wilkes attended the NYS Statewide Preservation Conference in Rochester at the Memorial Art Gallery, including a thought-provoking and engaging keynote presentation by preservation architect Nakita Reed on “Resilient Regeneration: The Importance of Being Historic and Sustainable.” Erin had the honor of participating in a panel discussion about LGBTQ+ heritage conservation, talking about AARCH’s beginning work to uncover LGBTQ+ history in the Adirondack region and place that history in the larger context. Wilkes volunteered in the window glazing session, helping teach conference attendees glazing techniques. We are looking forward to next year’s conference already!

As I sat next to Lewey Lake I wondered how it got its name. So with a little research I discovered it is named after the Abenaki Indian guide Lewis Elijah Benedict. Who is famously known in these neck-of-the woods for discovering and leading David Henderson to the iron ore veins of Tahawus. Lewis’s father, Sabael, was the original settler to the area.

Through steadfast leadership and stewardship, Grace Leach Hudowalski created a larger-than-life legacy in the Adirondack hiking community. In 1937, she became the first woman to summit all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks. Hudowalski helped establish the Adirondack 46ers, serving as the club’s first president and historian for more than 50 years. Following her passing, the hiking community worked for more than a decade to have East Dix officially renamed as Grace Peak in her honor. Maple season’s in full swing in the Adirondacks! 🍁 Let’s kick it off with Sunday trivia! Ever explored Horseshoe-Bog River? Those old foundations? They’re remnants of Horse Shoe Forestry Company, led by A.A. Low. Fun fact: In 1907, they set a record with 20,000 gallons of syrup! And Low? He wasn’t just a businessman; he held patents, including these square glass bottles for water, syrup, and berry preserves. Remarkably, at the time of his passing his patent count was second only to the renowned inventor Thomas Edison. #TupperLake #DiscoverTupper #MapleADK #NYMaple #nymaplesyrup #AdirondackHistory #Adirondacks

Founded in 1967, the Arts Center has a rich, vibrant, and treasured history, which is important to our ALCA supporters, and the Adirondack community and visitors we serve. Much effort and work has been done to preserve this history, and we are seeking to build on these past efforts. Will you help us? We are seeking volunteers to help continue these past efforts in preserving the history of the Arts Center. One goal is to continue to review the “back room” at the Arts Center, which includes photos, articles, publications, and documents; as well as reviewing the downstairs existing library of photos and historical documentation. With interviews, organization, and writing, our intent is to incorporate more of the history and photos of the Arts Center into the ALCA website, our public events, and in our fundraising. We hope you will be interested in helping us with The ALCA History Project, whether it be with an interview, helping to organize, or with your writing skills. Please contact Development General Director Jean-Marie Donohue if you would like to help, or for more information, at [email protected] or 518-352-7715. #ALCA #AdirondackArts #AdirondackHistory #BlueMountainLake

The Hotel Iroquois, an iconic structure that stood at the present site of Stewart’s at the junction of Routes 3 & 30 in Tupper Lake. This is a postcard that I recently added to my personal collection. Prior to being lost in the Big Fire in 1899, the Commercial House occupied the same lot as the Hotel Iroquois. In 1902, the Hotel Iroquois was built by Frederick H. Laduke. Over the years it was operated by many different people, including Thomas L. Weir, who is known for having built the Hotel Altamont in 1890 and owned the Tupper Lake Bottling Works from the 1890s until 1907. [1] In the 1920s, the Hotel Iroquois housed Tupper Lake’s first radio station, WHDL. Later, in 1927, the hotel was remodeled to include the fourth story that is shown on this postcard. At that point, the hotel had a total of 56 rooms. [1] In the 1930s, Lillian Phillips of Faust and A.W. Stewart of Oneida, NY managed the hotel, and it was purchased by Mrs. Elmer LeBoeuf in 1934. It was sold again to Edward J. Turo of Syracuse and operated under hotel lease after 1937. [1] Aldona Oberlander purchased the Iroquois in 1958 and refurbished the interior, especially the bar and dining rooms- making it one of the most exquisite hotel facilities in the Tri-Lakes. She sold the hotel to Mrs. Ralph Isabella in 1965, the then owner of the Hotel Alpine in Saranac Lake. [1] The Iroquois began to lose business see a decline in structural condition in the 1960s. It was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Matthew DiTraappani in 1967, and they ran it until its closure in 1973. It was sold at auction for only $2,000, with $10,000 accumulated in backed taxes. [1] The Iroquois met its fate when it was claimed by fire in 1976. The landmark hotel was no more. Stewart’s gas station was constructed on the empty lot sometime in the 1980s. Source: 1. A super early postcard depicting a family at a camp on Pitchfork Pond in Tupper Lake! This hand-colored postcard was published by EJ McNeely of Tupper Lake, and most likely originated from 1907-1910. I don’t know a lot of the history about this one, but I know Tupper Lake was and still is a very popular hunting destination. There are many postcards similar to this that exist from the 1900s. A 1920s lithograph postcard of a horse team hauling logs during the winter logging season in Tupper Lake. In the old days before advanced machinery was readily available, loggers used horses and mules to haul logs through miles of wilderness in Tupper Lake before they were shipped out by railroad or dumped into the water to float up to Raquette Pond where many of the sawmills stood. Logging originated in the area prior to the Civil War. The Pomeroy Logging Company became active in Tupper Lake in the 1850s. Later in 1870, the first dam at Setting Pole was built on the Raquette River, flooding Raquette Pond for logging purposes. Logs were shipped from Tupper Lake to Potsdam where sawmills processed the lumber, but not before they were arduous transported through rapids and a thousand-foot descent over the distance between the two towns. [1] The construction of the original Setting Pole Dam led to the desolation shown in the third photo. A Seneca Ray Stoddard photo taken in 1888, “The Drowned Lands of the Lower Raquette” exposed the destruction caused by logging practices in the early days of Tupper Lake. [2] Despite this, Raquette Pond now exists as a flourishing ecosystem for fish, birds, deer, and other animals that frequent the marshes along the causeway to Moody. As stated in one of my previous posts, John Hurd purchased 60,000 acres of timber in 1883- and his actions earned him the title as one of Tupper Lake’s most influential early lumbermen. Hurd’s Mill, also known as “The Big Mill” or the Santa Clara Lumber Mill opened on the shores of Raquette Pond in 1890 and closed in 1930. The sawmill was known for having the LONGEST BANDSAW IN THE WORLD at the time and having broken the WORLD RECORD for board feet of lumber produced in one day TWO TIMES in its history- over 1,000,000 board feet. [1] Shown in the 4th photo is the historical marker that was placed at the mill site by Business & Professional Women, Lions and Rotary Clubs of Tupper Lake. Sources: 1. A 1930s view of Little Wolf Beach in Tupper Lake Junction. This is a printed postcard from my personal collection. Little Wolf Beach has been a popular summer hangout for locals and tourists for over 100 years. If you look closely, you can see a bus from the school in Tupper Lake JCT at what is now the Moose Lodge! In the background of the photo, you can see a dock loaded with people in the water, and hundreds of people on the beach where the modern pavilion now stands. In the 1900s, the shores of Little Wolf Beach were cleared where the current campsite and pavilions stand. Many locals frequented the site and Holy Name Church even held summer outings there annually. [1] On July 1, 1921 - this day 102 years ago, the Coney Beach (Little Wolf Beach) Pavilion opened to the public as a resort. It had 11 hotel rooms, a dance pavilion, and 28 bathhouses. [1] An orchestra group from Utica was contracted to perform for the first season, and many people turned out daily for the entertainment. However, the success of Coney Beach’s resort was short-lived. One night that same August, a devastating fire broke out and burnt the building to the ground. Only one cash register was saved. [1] Little Wolf Beach remained popular among locals despite the hardships faced in 1921. This photo is from about a decade after the fire, and it’s evident that people still loved to head to Little Wolf Pond on hot summer days. To this day, the campsite has had no trouble selling out for the summer season. Along with Fish Creek and Rollins Pond, Little Wolf is a popular destination for tourists and locals who love to spend their summers on the water. Sources 1. Mostly Spruce & Hemlock - Louis J. Here’s a recent illustration project for @adirondacklifemagazine’s September/October issue. It will accompany an excerpt from author Amy Godine’s book, The Black Woods. “The Black Woods chronicles the history of Black pioneers in New York's northern wilderness.” After reading the excerpt, I was inspired by the tenacity and bravery of these often forgotten folks (freed men and women, and abolitionists). Be sure to check out the Adirondack Life article this fall, and preorder Amy’s book here: https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501771682/the-black-woods/ #bookTabs=1 Check out my stories for a peek at my process, including notes, thumbnails, and color sketch.

Outdoor #camping began to take root in the area starting in the early 1900s. Setting up camp on the AuSable River about 1920, these three men are readying to prepare a meal over a campfire. 📷 Courtesy of Suzanne Underwood Field #adkcamping #adirondackhistory #oldphoto #adkhistory

Thank you so much to Marian Crossman & Janet Munger Crossman who stopped at Woodcraft today to bring us a camp keepsake from Marian's husband and from Janet's father. Check out the beautiful penmanship and artwork on this shelf fungus used to commemorate the Cayuga I cabin members from 1944! (We need to get back to this art!!) David Crossman was the son of Ray & Hughena Crossman. Together they supervised the stockade during many summers in the 30s and 40s. Ray was the head counselor at Woodcraft and Hughena was camp nurse. David grew up at camp from the time he was a baby. Marian and Janet remember his stories of Woodcraft very fondly and know that he eventually became a bugler at camp and was involved in leading activities that involved theater. David was a professor at the University of Pittsburg and continued to love & enjoy the wilderness well after his Woodcraft years. Visiting with alumni & their families always reminds us of the depth and importance of the Woodcraft experience 💛🌲💛 #summercamp #adirondackhistory #adirondacks #adklife #adklifemag #localadk #oldforgeny #summercamps #history #historyintheadirondacks

This is the fire tower that started it all for me! At an altitude of 2,170 feet, built in 1917, the steel Poke-O-Moonshine firetower stands tall on the summit and offers brilliant views of Lake Champlain, Burlington, Vermont, and the hills of Vermont off to the east. High Peaks stand to the South, and the Adirondack Northway (I-87)is plainly visible in the valley below. #firetower #firedetection #nydec #adirondacks #Adirondackhistory #adirondackmountains #hikeny #getoutside

We went on a hike today to find a big rock, and we were not disappointed. This "big rock" is actually called an erratic, and you can find them all over the Adirondacks. While geographically speaking the Adirondacks are mountains, geologically speaking, the Adirondack Mountains are quite unique. Most mountain ranges are formed from tectonic activity, but the Adirondacks were once a giant dome. Glaciers came through and tore the rock dome apart, shaping the mountains that we see today and leaving glacial erratics everywhere- this is why you'll find these big boulders at really high elevation here! The dome continues to rise today, growing at the rate of about a foot per century. As if that wasn't cool enough, the bedrock that makes up the Adirondacks is some of the oldest rock on the planet, some of dating back over 1 BILLION YEARS! #adirondacks #adk #adventure #adirondackhistory #erratics #explore #glaciers #geology #insidetheblueline #naturalhistory #wilderness

Seneca Ray Stoddard was known for his photography for the magic lantern. Some of the slides were even hand tinted. He's also noted for being an author, a poet, and even a cartographer. His work popularized the 'dacks, sort of like some of the insta influencers of today. . . . . #senecaraystoddard #adirondacks #adk #adks #adkhistory #adirondackhistory #paddleadk #adkflyfishing #adirondackmountains #adkmountains #adkvibes #adklife #adirondacklife #adirondackexplorer #pureadk #visitadks #escapebrooklyn #thisisupstate #adklegends #adirondackart #thisisnotreal #cecinestpasunepipe

Life pro tip: If Nick Stoner has knocked a couple back, it's a bad time to admit to killing his father. Mitchell Sabattis, also legendary for agricultural pursuits, including maple sugaring. Figure around this time of year he and his family would've been hauling a lot of sap buckets. He's on the record for producing 80lbs of maple syrup one year, that's about 1.6 tons of sap. And that's just what he told the tax man. . . . . #adirondacks #adk #adks #adirondacklife #mitchellsabattis #adklife #saranaclakeny #saranaclake #pureadk #adkhistory #adirondackhistory #adirondackguide #maplesyrup #sugarshack #maplesugaring #nyloveswinter #visitadks #adirondackexplorer #adkart #adirondackart #adkvibes #adklegends #cecinestpasunepipe #thisisnotreal
