The beautiful little houses are to be demolished. Completely incomprehensible to me. Life is not just about profit, commerce and uniform buildings. The wonderful village of Nida on the Curonian Spit is losing more and more of its identity, individuality and character. Where is the free and creative Lithuanian spirit? Unfortunately, Nida is mutating into just another cold and characterless resort for the rich and beautiful. Or those who think they are. Not for me. What a pity. Over the last 25 years, I have spent many wonderful vacations there and have wonderful memories. I'm afraid the next vacation will be the last. It's not too late yet. 🇪🇪🇱🇹🇱🇻 Il 23 agosto rappresenta la 𝗚𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗡𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝗿𝗼, ovvero la Giornata Europea di Commemorazione di tutti i regimi totalitari e autoritari. Nella fattispecie, nell’area baltica indica un momento di sentita denuncia dei crimini perpetrati dal n4zism0 e dal comunismo sovietico, entrambi subiti dalle popolazioni di Estonia, Lituania e Lettonia nel corso del XX secolo. Oltre a ciò, tuttavia, il 23 agosto del 1989 cadeva un’altra ricorrenza piuttosto importante, ovvero il cinquantenario dalla firma del patto Molotov-Ribbentrop, che ha rappresentato un momento di svolta per il continente europeo, all’alba della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. In particolare, una notizia che generò parecchi malumori fu l’ammissione da parte di alcune fonti istituzionali sovietiche dell’esistenza di una clausola segreta, inerente all’occupazione delle tre nazioni baltiche negli anni quaranta. 🪧 Quel giorno dunque Tallin, Vilnius e Riga fremevano per un’agognata indipendenza politica, che di fatto mancava dal periodo pre-bellico. Le tre capitali nordiche, e con esse gli interi territori circostanti, si resero infatti protagoniste di una delle proteste pacifiche più impattanti degli ultimi decenni di storia. Sotto il coordinamento di tre partiti politici locali, centinaia di migliaia di persone si organizzarono all’unisono per realizzare una lunga catena umana, stringendosi le mani per circa 675 km. L’obiettivo era emanciparsi politicamente dall’URSS, lanciando al mondo un messaggio di compattezza sociale al riguardo. L’efficacia performativa della catena umana ebbe i suoi effetti, facendo circolare il messaggio all’estero ed esercitando pressione politica sul Cremlino, che scelse di non rispondere con la repressione. Del resto, l’URSS stava affrontando una delle fasi più complicate dalla sua nascita, facendo uso di ricette economico-politiche non adeguate alle contingenze, quali la glasnost’ e la perestrojka, che anzi contribuirono all’innesco di timide proteste popolari, via via sempre più accese. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning 690 kilometres (430 mi) across the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which at the time were occupied and annexed by the USSR and had a combined population of approximately eight million. There was something magical about stumbling on this hidden tile randomly in #CathedralSquare ✨It just felt - "different" - and so I decided to snatch a quick photo, keep it moving (so much to see), and do a little research back at the hotel that evening.📑👩🏽💻✏️ Turns out that this unassuming and serendipitous stone is a lucky find and most famous for its magical wish-granting properties🧞♂️🌟The stone is said to be #HallowedGround and a piece of inspirational history 🪽🤝🏼The #Stebuklas (Lithuanian for "miracle") stone, represents a momentous day in #LithuanianHistory 🇱🇹 From August 23, 1939 until late 1991, #Lithuania was considered a #Republic under the #SovietUnion, much to the protest of its people. Many saw the integration of Lithuania into the #USSR as a farce, and called it an illegal takeover, a military occupation. Tense relations reigned between the #SovietGovernment and Lithuania for 50 years, until ~1989. At this point, the USSR was on politically shaky ground: the #BerlinWall came down, the Soviet Satellites were restless, and Soviet citizens themselves were outspoken in their unhappiness.😡🇷🇺 However, the loudest and the clearest display of dissent was perhaps the quietest and most peaceful. On August 20, 2023, over 100 people gathered on Black Ribbon Day in a demonstration of solidarity to commemorate the victims of totalitarian regimes, and also to join hands—literally—in a visible and meaningful show of support for the people of Ukraine. For the second year in a row, this event was co-organized by the Baltic communities in Vancouver together with the Polish and Ukrainian communities, and the Central and Eastern European Council in Canada (CEEC). The one-hour program was highlighted by a speech from Dr. Nataliia Ivchyk, visiting scholar UBC, and Adrian Petriw, co-founder of the Ukrainian-Canadian Advocacy group. Algis Jaugelis, President of the Lithuanian Community of British Columbia, spoke about the 1989 Baltic Way and how it has continued to inspire peoples who seek national independence and democratic reform. He finished by inviting participants to take part in the joined-hands human chain that would conclude the event. Community singers sang "The Baltics are waking up!”, a trilingual song composed by Boriss Rezniks sung in Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian which was composed for the Baltic Way, and became an anthem of resistance and a unified call for the independence of the Baltic States. Mariia Hahalovska (accompanied by Aarne Tork on guitar) sang "Oi u luzi chervona kalyna"—a Ukrainian patriotic march which has become a symbol of Ukrainian identity and resistance during the 2022 invasion. 우리 눈엔 다 똑같아 보이지만 리투아니아는 동유럽과 러시아 다수 민족인 슬라브족과 다른, 발틱족이 대부분이다. 그러니까 러시아랑 역사도 민족도 공유할 게 없던 나라였는데, 아무래도 약소국이다보니 슬라브족들인 폴란드, 러시아에게 지배를 많이 받았다. 2차 대전 직전, 수도 빌뉴스를 두고 폴란드와 다투던 리투아니아는 수도를 되찾기 위해 소련의 힘을 빌렸고, 그 뒤 자연스레 소비에트 연방의 일원이 됐다.(여우 피하려다 호랑이 만난 꼴) 하지만 100년 넘는 러시아 지배기간 동안에도 국가 정체성을 잃지 않았던 사람들이 연고도 혈연도 없는 소련 한집 살이가 쉬웠을리 없다. 결국 1988년, 소련 병합 50주년을 맞이해 기가막힌 독립 요구 퍼포먼스를 선보였는데, 그게 바로 '발트의 길' Baltic's Way이라 불리는 인간띠였다. 리투아니아-라트비아-에스토니아 국경 650km를 따라 3국의 2백만 국민이 길에 나와 손에 손을 잡은 것. 물론 퍼포먼스가 독립의 비결은 아녔겠지만, 마침 고르바쵸프의 개혁개방 선언이 있었고, 소련 연방의 구심력도 약해져가는 타이밍을 잘 포착했다고 할 수 있겠다. 올드 타운의 게디미나스 탑 Gediminas Tower은 당시 인간띠의 시작점으로 리투아니아 독립의 상징적 스팟이다. 역사가 이러니 이들이 우크라이나와 함께 싸울 수밖에. #balticway #baltic #poland #russia #ussr #independent #supportukraine #lithuania

Baltic Way 🇱🇹🇱🇻🇪🇪 On Saturday, the 26th of August, 2023, people from the three Baltic States gathered together to commemorate this symbolic act together with dignitaries from the three countries, as well as Switzerland. We also celebrated 75th anniversary of the Swiss-Baltic Committee that was helping the Baltic States since all those years. We are very grateful for all their work and a tremendous support. 🇨🇭❤️ It was a beautiful event, with an amazing energy and sharing between 300 people during the whole day! Singing, dancing together and sharing traditional meals. 💞 Even the weather decided to be on our side: it stopped raining when we went outside to make a human chain around the French Church. As the Cold War professed and it became apparent that the Soviet Bloc would no longer be stable, many countries began to demand independence. For the Baltic states, this included the Rahvarinne of Estonia, the Tautas fronte of Latvia, and Sąjūdis of Lithuania. The three groups organized together to demonstrate solidarity with one another. The three groups wished to commemorate the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, where Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union collaborated to split Eastern Europe between themselves. The main form of protest was to create a large human chain across the Baltic states. Approximately two million people formed a chain that spanned 690 kilometers (430 miles). It is important to note that the Baltic states at the time had a combined population of eight million. The Soviets responded with strong rhetoric to denounce the protests, but did not forcibly end the human chain. Thirty-four years ago today in 1989 the Baltic States Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania formed a human chain in protest of Soviet occupation. Yearning to be independent again the three countries sent a message to Moscow. Being fed up with Soviet occupation and years of oppression activists came up with a non-violent protest to mark the anniversary of the 1939 non-aggression Molotov Ribbentrop pact. Within seven months of the protest Lithuania was the first to declare independence and in 1991 the independence was recognized by most countries. If history has taught us anything about communism is that it destroys countries and cultures and represses ethnic groups in their own lands and go as far to kill existing group of people and to replace them with another group to cause ethnic tensions in the future. We must not forget the bravery of the Baltic states in taking back and rebuilding their country and restoring its culture from imperialist occupiers. Like some events today some countries don’t want to let go of the past and seek to take what they think is theirs by invading and killing people in attempt to take land to expand their country. The struggle of freedom comes with a price that few are willing to pay. We must not forget those who sacrifice their lives so that future generations can have freedom. But people are defiant in wanting to stay independent and have no desire to go back to being ruled by one group in their land. Dziś mija 34 rocznica Bałtyckiego Łańcucha (🇱🇹🇱 Baltijos kelias, 🇱🇻 Baltijas ceļš, 🇪🇪 Balti kett). Od kilku lat w ten dzień zawsze piszę te same słowa. Bałtycki Łańcuch jest dla mnie bardzo ważnym wydarzeniem i co roku na swoim profilu przypominam te kilka zdań, jakie kiedyś napisałam. Co roku przypominam co tak niesamowitego się wydarzyło 23 sierpnia 1989 roku w Litwie, Łotwie i Estonii, wtedy jeszcze będącymi częścią ZSRR. Pozwolę sobie je tu też wkleić: Krótka lekcja historii (która jest ciągle pomijana w wielu środkach masowego przekazu): nie każdy protest czy rewolucja musi przynosić zniszczenie i pochłonąć miliony ofiar. Można zaprotestować spokojnie, a stanowczo. Jak Litwini, Łotysze i Estończycy, którzy 34 lata temu stworzyli żywy łańcuch (zwany Bałtyckim Łańcuchem), ciągnący się przez ich trzy kraje. Normally, I'm just interested in the photos themselves, but this time, I was curious about the photographer. How did he/she manage to take a photo like this, especially 30 years ago, when there were no drones at all? The photo seemed famous, so I thought it'd be easy to find the photographer, but I'm still searching. Yesterday, I discovered a color photo, taken by the 🇱🇹 photographer V. Usinavičius-Augulis, similar to this, and I was surprised. It's because a year ago, I read "30 Years Ago: How A Photographer Captured The 'Baltic Chain' From Above" written by @amos.chapple on RFERL, and since then, I'd assumed the 🇱🇻 photographer Aivars Liepiņš took it. "Who took this photo?" still seems a mysterious question, but this cool article about the photographer Liepiņš, answered my question about how photographers took aerial photos back then. Long story short, he took them from a helicopter. Others might have used different vehicles. However, I'm able to tell all the photographers felt similar emotions on August 23, 1989, no matter what methods they used. Even I can feel them now, 30 years later and far away from there. This photo has definitely pulled at my heartstrings. What's sad about it is that this is not just history. During the ongoing war, we've formed a chain again. Not visible like this, but a chain connecting the world to support 🇺🇦. Not physically connected hand to hand, but heart to heart! Today, on August 23rd, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Baltic Way, which are important for the history of 🇱🇹Lithuanian statehood. ▪️August 23 is commemorated globally as Black Ribbon Day to remember and honour the victims of Communism and Nazism in Europe. This date is associated with August 23, 1939, when the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed, an agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, the secret protocols of which led to the occupation and devastation of entire European nations. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact on August 23, 1989, approximately two million residents of 🇱🇹 #Lithuania, 🇱🇻 #Latvia and 🇪🇪 #Estonia joined their hands in a human chain known as the Baltic Way, leading to the independence of these states. The #BalticWay proved to the whole world that brave people who fight for freedom live here 🤝.
