Student Veteran Organization on campus beaches staff and faculty on campus as their fundraiser. The students determine staff or faculty members who they believe will be good sports about being beached. The money raised goes to sponsor veterans to attend the annual Student Veterans of America conference. The SVA conference connects veterans to employers, veteran networks, and provides training to help them transition into the civilian job market. Part of the proceeds have been donated to the Afghanistan-Iraq Veterans War Memorial Fund which is building a monument in Danbury to honor those who served in the Post 9/11 wars. #beached

. D A Y 2 - A R E W E B E A C H E D . . . ? ? Continued from last post… We worried a lot about getting off the river bank but we had to wait until the sun was up to assess the situation. Would we be able to reverse the boat ourselves, or would we have to make an SOS call to Bazza? Given there was no phone signal, we decided that if we had to stay in that spot for all 3 nights, then so be it! We consulted the trusty manual and it seems there’s a wriggle manouver that consists of chucking the boat into reverse (with high revs), whilst doing a series of left hand / right hand turns on the wheel to wriggle off the river bank. The rest of the crew had to stand at the back so I had the wheel house all to myself (no pressure). It took about 25 wriggles to float free and i’ll never forget the intense screaming from the girls when we finally floated free. But f&%k, now we would have to park it again 🤦🏻♀️ We learnt so much that first day and we were lucky to end up with a picture perfect landing (fourth attempt) on day two. Our gangplanks actually reached the river bank and the sun was shining which was a huge help. Video 1: How the boat was moored overnight. Video 2: The girls tying us to the trees. Over the past few weeks, I’ve done some digging into marine protected areas (MPA) around the world. Unfortunately, as it stands, many of these ‘protected areas’ are actually void of any meaningful levels of protection at all. It seems they have been created without sound policy and little to no enforcement to support what measures actually are in place. As MPAs increase in number around the world, as I hope they do, we must remain vigilant to the protection and enforcement measures they actually guarantee. We must hold governments to account so these conservation ‘efforts’ do not become a bandaid over a bullet hole.
