🖌 Meet the Teacher 🖌 This week we are pleased to introduce you to Bonface Beti. Bonface is an international artist-peacebuilder and educator who applies theatre-based interventions with individuals and communities to create a story of peace. He integrates and applies embodied expressive tools into larger social justice issues as a language for social justice, decolonization, and structural transformation. He completed his undergraduate psychological counseling and theatre studies in Kenya and holds a MA degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Manitoba, Canada, and is currently working on his PhD at the same University. Bonface teaches within our arts-based Equity, Diversity and Inclusion program called Weaving Braids of Belonging. He also offers support in the development of expressive arts programming for social change and peacebuilding. 🖌 Meet the Teacher 🖌 This week we are pleased to introduce you to Maria Riccardi. Maria is an art therapist, guidance counselor, and psychotherapist. She founded a clinic in Montreal based on the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC), which offers therapeutic, educational, and career guidance for children and families. She has collaborated in the development of community-based programs for individuals who are marginalized due to mental and physical health issues, as well as for people living with immigration and poverty-related challenges. She is a part-time professor at the Université du Québec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue and a faculty member with us at WHEAT Institute. She is registered by The American Art Therapy Association (ATR) and certified by The Art Therapy Credential Board (ATR-BC). She is a member and past president of the Quebec Art Therapy Association (AATQ). Her research includes media properties and their role in evaluation. I wanted to make a series of ravens and hawks because both are surrounded with magic and insight. They are also inextricably linked with death for me. I have had many many people die in my life and admired many many humans that have passed on and left behind great beauty. I have looked for ways to remember my dead with calm and love rather than painfully. I also grew up loving a graphic artist called Edward Gorey who’s hilarious graveyard/gallows humour never ceases to bring me joy, and his birds and his words despite being dire do dramatic transformations of pain into hilarious absurdity. These are definitely an ode to him and his hilarity as well. Raven & hawk, those who see it all and remind you of how powerful it is to be aware of life’s magic as well as pain. I have always wanted to make wee totems for all my dead, loving them in the magic of raven and hawk and bound with a musical dedication to make it a song of love and joy for having had them on my journey. I have a sister who lived in the middle east and came home with a falcon hood, I was awed by its beauty. I asked her to get me some from the souk so I could use them in my sculptural investigations. The idea for me of having the hoods is to embrace the power of hawk but also have the power to limit my exposure to seeing everything, knowing everything, feeling everything. So the ability to take the hood on and off is ever present, it also reminds us that some things are meant to be obscured, accepting not seeing/knowing everything. This felt like an opportune moment to include my face on my feed AND express the power of witnessing and vulnerability. 👀 Witnessing 👀 art in art therapy is incredibly valuable. While it took me awhile into my training to understand this, because I personally struggle with having my art witnessed, I have seen this opportunity have incredible value for my clients. Why is it valuable? Because it gives clients an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings without necessarily having to use words. 🎨 All the emotions. The happy ones. 😊 The sad ones. 😔 The angry ones. 😠 The lonely ones. 🥺 Some of the experts in the art therapy field, like Bruce Moon, talk about how making art can help us communicate things we might not even be aware of ourselves. Melanie Klein, another influential thinker, suggests that art can show us what's going on deep down in our minds 🧠 , even if we're not consciously aware of it. When therapists (much like I will be very soon!) observe and discuss the art their clients make, it helps them understand what their clients are going through on a 🤿 deeper level. This is why creating a safe space where healing and growth can happen, even if it's hard to put everything into words, is what is so important to what we do as art therapists. Having had a playful and transformative learning journey through our Expressive Arts Certificate, Janine had a heartfelt desire to help the institute. To this end, she devised a very unique and special way to contribute to the WHEAT Students Scholarship Fund so that we may provide small scholarships in perpetuity to diploma students. Janine first launched the Playing with Archetypes: Fairy Tales - Our Tales game kit, followed by Little Calf's Journey. By 2021 Janine had introduced the Animal Teachings: Circle of Life game kit and Bon Voyage book series in support of our Maria Campbell Indigenous Healing Arts Publishing Fund. 🎉 Celebrating 10 years of learning to listen in colour with WHEAT Institute 🎉 In 2018-2019 WHEAT collaborated with the Youth Poverty Reduction Strategy in Sioux Lookout, Ontario to provide training for school and community-based staff in the therapeutic use of the expressive arts. WHEAT Founding Director, Darci Adam and sessional instructors Linda Manitowabi, Tanja Woloshen, Marg Janick-Grayston, Di Brandt, Csilla Przibislawsky, Victoria McIntosh, Kate Donohue, and Karen Wallace traveled to Sioux Lookout to facilitate a series of expressive arts classes exploring theory and practice, movement, art making as mindfulness, poetry, creative drama, Indigenous ways of knowing through the arts, working with trauma, and focus centred art therapy. This was the first time our training had been offered outside of Winnipeg! We are able to provide a program to your rural or remote community that caters to the specific healing and wellness needs of your community. His body centered approach includes the body of the earth in the teaching of this healing practice. While much of his work is in creating healing in communities, he has also been a practicing expressive arts therapist consistently since 1986.
