“Nobody’s Journals.” This exhibit by @sjestabrooks at the @ottawaartgallery struck me as I wandered down a hallway in the middle of an event. I could’ve spent hours sifting through these unseen moments of motherhood, scrawled in multiple notebooks, and hung on the wall to be made visible. It made me wonder about how many people share similar experiences behind their respective walls, lacking the spaces or community to relate to one another. I feel like we’re not fully seeing our connections with others (or not have the time and/or money to connect with others, like so many people right now). I’m grateful for mothers’ (many, varied) stories, especially the parts that are hidden from view.

While in Winnipeg I also had the opportunity to explore the historic Red River area that has been a meeting ground for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. It is also the homeland of the Red River Métis community. As I wandered around The Forks, I watched as the winding Red converged with the Assiniboine River. Along the way I read about the historical significance of the land, and I attempted to picture what the landscape would look like 200 years ago when ancestral Métis communities took up roots. I longed for the vast expanse of nature, devoid of tall buildings and noisy, car-clogged streets. Then I traversed the Esplanade Riel across the river to St. Boniface. The small St. Boniface Museum, a former convent for the Grey Nuns that settled in Manitoba in the 19th century, shares the rich history of the Red River Métis and has a wonderful collection of Métis beadwork and embroidery on display. It also recounts the heroism of Métis leaders and community members fighting for their freedom as European-Canadians continued to encroach on their land. Most haunting was the display of celebrated Métis leader Louis Riel’s coffin and paraphernalia used in his execution. After I left the museum, I made sure to stop by the St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery to pay my respects to Riel. I also spent time at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The building’s complex interior architecture, full of zig-zagging marble ramps makes one feel as though they are literally journeying through time. From horrific atrocities and acts of genocide, to resilience and strength, the museum details the complexities of human experience and underscores the belief that ‘all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.’ I spent the most time at the multiple Métis exhibits, complete with artwork by Jennine Krauchi, Christi Belcourt, and Sherry Farrell Racette. Krauchi’s larger-than-life ancestrally inspired tabbed fire bag commands the space and entrances viewers with its vibrant, swirling bead patterns. The names of displaced Métis communities are stitched down the center, emphasizing the devastating consequences of colonialism. (Continued in comments)

Hello! It’s been a while… As I have only a few weeks left of my grant, I wanted to make a post detailing what I’ve been working on for the last 8 months. What started out as a desire to learn more about Indigenous curatorial activism and the continuance of Métis beadwork traditions, blossomed into something so much bigger with potential real-world implications. In January I had to quickly deviate from my original plan of interviewing prominent Métis artists, scholars, and curators due to ethical complications. As I mentioned in a previous post, since there is no overarching governing body for the Métis Nation, unlike First Nations and Inuit peoples, it is difficult to navigate proper protocols for consent and collaboration. While not impossible, at that point in my research journey I did not have enough time to wade through these complex (yet necessary) bureaucratic processes and still maintain a respectful relationship to the community. Instead of speaking directly with Métis individuals in a formal capacity, I created a robust bibliography based on methodology and praxis devised by Canadian-Métis curators. This would serve as a contextual basis on which to evaluate how these Métis-specific curatorial frameworks could be applied south of the Medicine Line—the transnational border between the US and Canada. The purpose of this proposed framework is not to insinuate or distill a particular conception of ‘Métisness,’ rather, it entertains the idea that curatorial strategies steeped in various Métis-centered epistemologies could be a mechanism through which the Métis’ distinct cultural presence is reasserted within art/cultural institutions across boundary lines. I have used the image of a Métis flower to illustrate the components that are essential to Métis-specific curatorial frameworks: Locality, Kinships, Storytelling/Knowledge Transference, and Dialogic Collaboration. Each element signals core components localized to Métis culture and identity and can be translated into curatorial methodology and praxis. (continued in comments)

I just pulled the last of them from the kiln and plunked them on my laundry table, I mean, my slab roller that I never use, and I had to take a quick snap. I've been thinking A LOT about who runs things on the planet and how they continually fail womankind and the animal kingdom, and I had an idea. The world is a hot mess. Do you know it was only 50 years ago that women could get a credit card on their own without their husband or parents co-signing? Banks "could" allow them to get one without, but rarely did. Then, a law was enacted. Anyway. I digress. I imagined a world run by animals. All the mammals, reptiles, birds, fish. These are the first "Assembly of Rational Souls." There will be many more iterations. Many more animals. I couldn't use Parliament because that is exclusive to owls. I couldn't use Congress because that is exclusive to Baboons (appropriate!) 🖼 Art School Confidential: Celebrating 50 Years of the Department of Visual Arts, University of Ottawa @ Ottawa Art Gallery 🖼 Curated by Professor Penny Cousineau-Levine, Art School Confidential is an exhibition that celebrates five decades of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa @ottawaartgallery, representing the work of 50 artists who have taught and studied in the historic building since 1974. That year, artist, educator, administrator, and creator of the Canada Council’s Art Bank Collection, Suzanne Rivard Le Moyne, arrived at the University, where she brought together a formidable team of artists and important art historians, to become the founding faculty members of the Department of Visual Arts. Painting, sculpture, photography, media, installation, performance, and the intersection of these in interdisciplinary practice are all taught in the Department and are reflected in the exhibition. I attended the @ottawaartgallery’s #sci_art Art, Science, and Technology Symposium last weekend, and all of the panelists were wonderful—it was especially nice to hear international perspectives on current topics and issues of the day such as generative AI. As a photographer, of course I was especially drawn to @basilalrawi’s work with the @iraqphotoarchive, a space of representation where authentic images of Iraq life and culture can be shared and celebrated.
