Mothers Are Special!! We’re reminiscing on Mother’s Day before the end of May. #FranschhoekValleyCommunitySportCentre’s Mother’s Day event was a little bit different this year. This year the coaches wanted to show love and appreciation to the mothers of our sport participants. So they went to the homes of players and gave over 50 mothers a cupcake and a rose 🌹 to show their appreciation! This might sound like a small gesture, but it was delivered with a big smile and a lot of love!!! The CUP YeBoneers work with Grade 3 & 4 learners, assisting them to improve in Numeracy and Literacy. All these sessions are fun and engaging and take place at the learner’s school after school. Yesterday the YearBeyond @HomeLearning YeBoneers did a child protection awareness activity as Child Protection Week is coming up next week. TheYeBoneers did a skit illustrating a Bully and a Kidnapping Scenario for more than 300 learners at Magnolia Primary School. The Main messages were “1. Be vigilant. 2. Seek help from trusting adults and the police. And 3. The U19 and U15 teams from Desmond Tutu High School participated in the Cape Winelands High School Champs on Friday 17 May 2024 at Paarl Girls High School. Something a little different for two of our wheelchair players yesterday. They went across town to Bewsey Lodge Primary School with Wolfie and team Coach Isaac to open the schools new ‘Quiet Zone’. Opportunities like this are great not just for our disability teams to raise awareness of the variations of the sport but also for disability awareness in general. The Cycle to the Seaside bike ride, sponsored by Jacobs, is a great way to challenge yourself, meet new friends and fundraise for the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation. Setting off from the Halliwell Jones Stadium, the route will take you through the Lancashire countryside stopping off at the iconic Blackpool Tower, before saddling back on the bike and returning to Warrington for some well-deserved refreshments in the Kings Head. Last night we were down the road at the Kings Head for our first ‘Meet the Wire’ event with 1st team stars Matty Ashton and Lachlan Fitzgibbon, joined alongside by Foundation General Manger Lee Mitchell, Community RL Development Officer Pete Astley MBE and Team Coach Richard Marshall. The night was a great opportunity for local community club players, parents and coaches to hear first hand from our guest speakers about their experiences in the Rugby League world, the work we do in the local community and what life is like to transition away from playing professionally. We hope this was the first of many events as we look to continue and grow our engagement within the community. #FranschhoekValleyCommunitySportCentre Netball juniors joined the Stellenbosch Netball District League and their first games were during the celebration of Freedom day on the 27th of April 2024. Under 13 & 15 participated and didn't win but gave it their all and coach Sibrina Montle who was a senior player last year and a YeBoneer has been impressed with the discipline and the way this group played. The young boys of the centre became runners up of the under 10 knockout after narrowly loosing the final against Nietvoorbji F.c by 2-1. Onika Dindala has been a top player & top goalscorer for FVCSC F.C in this tournament!! Well done boys for fighting until the finals and yes, next time is always an opportunity to win! Freedom Month Celebration!! The #FranschhoekValleyCommunitySportCentre celebrated Freedom Month in collaboration with Rickety Bridge Estate early in the morning on 20th April 2024. We had over 180 centre participants (girls & boys soccer, netball, football, YeBoneers, aerobics and some parents) take part in a 5 km run on the beautiful Rickety Bridge Estate. Running is such a a great way for participants to experience the reality that in life we must strive no matter how long and difficult the journey is! What really matters is not giving up! The day started with a warm-up aerobics session, followed by the 5km run, and we ended the day with a powerful message from Chanelle Schoeman from Rickety Bridge: "Freedom Day today means fairness, equal opportunities, as well as learning from one another and treating each person with kindness!" From all of us at FVCSC, we thank you very much, Rickety Bridge, for such a wonderful event and opportunity for our participants! #MbekweniCommunitySportCentre weekend sports update: Football, Senior Team: MCSC 3 - 2 Drakenstein Academy MCSC 3 - 1 Cambio FC Volleyball - Goodwill Festival Tournament: 11 MCSC players were selected to represent Cape Winelands teams! The U19 Males lost narrowly 1-2 to Cape Town... And then won 2-1 against West Coast! The U19 Females lost 0-2 against Cape Town and 1-2 against West Coast. And the Male Masters lost narrowly 14-15 against the Cape Winelands Senior Men. But they won 30-22 against Cape Town Male Masters! Celebrating Worker’s Day the FITNESS way! On the 1st of May #MbekweniCommunitySportCentre had their first Aerobics Marathon of the year!! A whole morning of nonstop aerobics! It was such a fun time to connect with everyone! Athletes, coaches, sport participants, fitness fanatics and all our treasured Centre supporters. We had 7 instructors leading - from Franschhoek, Mbekweni YOUTH Centre and MCSC. 68 of our athletes participated too! And we had a member from CPUT Wellington who specialises in fitness run a session, which the participants enjoyed very much! All in all it was a wonderfully successful event!! A BIG thank you to all those who participated, brought cheer, encouraged others and helped us to run this Aerobics Marathon! #SwartlandCommunitySportCentre celebrated Freedom Day in style with a museum inspired Information Session on the History of Freedom Day, followed by music and drama performances by our YearBeyond @HomeLearning, Catch-Up Programme and Little Explorers ECD YeBoneers. Our participants were quite inquisitive about the history of the day and there was great interaction from all! We followed the info session with an indigenous games SCORE for ALL! Plenty of fun was had by all! The IEC also joined us to do an info session on the upcoming National Elections. And finally our coaches wrapped it all up with workshops on 'freedom' and 'responsibility' before our sporting codes came together to do mixed Volleyball, Football and Netball! Lots of information was shared. We all learned something new, and we all had a really fun day!! The importance of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) is becoming more apparent every day. The Foundation’s Full STEAM Ahead project aims to provide creative learning opportunities for young people to enhance their self-confidence and teach skills that will improve future employability. The latest school to attend The Halliwell Jones Stadium was Lymm High School who were supported by Foundation sponsors, Honest Payroll. The students have been working on a career transition project for professional Rugby League players equipping them for life after the sport. Full Steam Ahead After starting the project two months ago, students from a handful of local schools came to the stadium on Thursday to give their final presentation to industry experts on how they would expand the stadium. This was a great opportunity for the students to get a real taste of the architectural industry and explore how the stadium could be used for other uses to boost income. Please note that this is the very first year that FVCSC has had a male netball team and in this short time one of our players has qualified for a federation team!! We asked Tammy about his experience: “The journey has been amazing! With the support from the team and the coach, as well as inspiration from my teammates in the Cape Winelands team (most of whom are from the Mbekweni Community Sport Centre - MCSC!) it has just been a huge privilege to work and play with these amazing people. A huge thank you also goes to Hope Through Action Foundation & SCORE - Changing Lives Through Sport for the opportunity to play netball! ⛳️🏌🏻♀️THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FORE 🏌🏻♀️ ⛳️ Sport Central had the pleasure of touring the @firstnationshealthconsortium through our facility in December of 2023. After a few wonderful conversations around how our organizations work with our respective communities, we turned the conversation to how we could help each other. Sport Central receives a tremendous volume of adult sized golf equipment and golf balls. Since we serve kids ages 4 to 17, we often have a surplus of these items. Fast forward to April 2024: Sport Central is working with the FNHC to get 40 full golf sets to individuals without access. We’re so grateful to connect this equipment to folks who can use it and are excited about furthering our relationship with the FNCH.
