And that's a wrap on April's training! 2,268 miles, almost 62 hours behind the wheel, 7 nights at 5 different Premier Inns and many, many lead pellets fired. The month began with the British Shooting Air Series Grand Final, which I was really pleased to have qualified for. I shot a dreadful mixed pairs match in the morning but redeemed myself with another MCS in my qualification match in the afternoon. The following weekend I drove through torrential rain to Aberdeen for a Scottish Target Shooting training camp - so nice to be back on the line with the team and lots of good work done. Back to Aldersley the following weekend for British Shooting Talent training weekend and finished the month back in Aberdeen with STS! I'm so grateful for all the amazing training I'm receiving and the camaraderie and support from the other athletes on both programmes. And of course I couldn't do any of this without a supportive family at home. May is looking a lot quieter on the travel front as I put the work preparing for the WSPS European Championships at the end of the month. #10mAirPistol #DisabilitySport #ShootingParaSport

Here they are! The newest recruits to our Inclusive Activity Leader (IAL) course. IAL trains disabled and non-disabled people side-by-side to become qualified sports coaches. The course has started off in the classroom with a Safeguarding workshop. Our 2023 course launched the careers of Temi, who has cerebral palsy and Jacob, who is neurodiverse. They are both now members of our coaching team. Where will IAL take our 2024 recruits? Follow their journey here! #inclusive #sportforall #disabilitysport

Our very own Mason Hindley of Villa Rockets Lions was awarded the top goal scorer in the West Midlands Midlands regional championship league. Mason has been a key part of the Lions team this season not only scoring goals but supporting and encouraging his teammates. Well done Mason for this fantastic achievement! #PowerchairFootball #powerchairsoccer #disabilitysport #AstonVilla #villarockets #football #topgoalscorer

#ThisGirlCan A big shout out to Millie Partridge‼️ Millie is relatively new to wheelchair rugby and she played outstandingly well in the Allied Mobility Wheelchair Rugby: Fours - Division One for the Bulls this season. Millie took the 3.5 best in class award in Plymouth, which is an amazing achievement for a fifteen year old. I was so caught up in the joy of this that I forgot to post! I got my running leg!! It’s so cool and I am so excited and I cannot wait to boss this (tho I already am, the physio had no notes 😏 except to keep using it). I was SO sore for 3 days after this, as I was using muscles I haven’t used in over two years 😳 but it was a good sore, I was grateful for the reminder of how lucky I am to have received this. I’m looking a little limpy in this firstly because of course I’m getting used to it and I was a bit sore, but they also made it a bit longer after the video as I was sinking in too much when I put my weight on it (like a big spring- but the goal is to have my hips level when I have equal weight on my legs). Now I need to build up tolerance and strength, and I’m keeping an eye on my knee as my muscles there are completely wasted. Expect to see many more photos!! (especially from France!) 🦿🤍 #amputee #disabled #disability #prostheticleg #instagood #runningblade #disabilitysport #learningtorun

April is Autism Awareness Month and Invacare community blogger, @meanderingpark says she wants acceptance, not awareness. -- As an Autistic person, I’m calling for Autism acceptance, not awareness in April. Why? Because awareness - “Be aware! Here be Autistics!” - makes us out to be creatures to be avoided. Whereas accepting Autism – “Rejoice! Here be Autistics!” – requires understanding and inclusion. How do we achieve Autism acceptance? First is understanding what Autism is (it's a type of brain), how it influences functioning (thinking, feelings, sensations, movement), and what the needs of Autistic people are (low sensory environments, visual supports, brain and movement breaks, literal communication, patience with question-asking, etc). For a deeper dive, check out @reframing_autism and @yellowladybugs_autism. Next, acceptance that the Autistic brain is different to the neurotypical brain. This sounds obvious. However, when I tell people that I’m Autistic, a common response is – “we’re all a little bit Autistic” or “we are all somewhere on the spectrum”. No! You can’t have a little bit of an Autistic brain any more than you can be a little bit pregnant. The Autistic brain is wired differently from the neurotypical brain. The hardest thing for most people to accept is that Autistic adults have Autistic access needs that are real and valid. An online troll has asked me if I expect “special treatment?” While I don’t expect a red carpet, I know that the standard neurotypical treatment doesn’t allow me to fully participate in the community. That’s unfair. For example, I requested that a local swimming pool stop playing loud pop music all the time, everywhere. My request was denied because “staff enjoy the party atmosphere”, as if I was a party-pooper. However, their loud music was so draining and disruptive to my Autistic brain that I had to stop using the pool. I need people to accept that my Autistic need for low-sensory environments is just as vital to my participation as my need for ramps when I’m using my mobility scooter. For Autism Acceptance Month, I ask you to understand, respect and include Autistic-me.
