"Appointments were relentless and the narrative was all about what Elliott couldnโt do, or what he wouldnโt do. The wonderful thing about Kids was they met him where he was at." โ Sharon, Elliottโs mother Elliott was diagnosed with Downโs Syndrome during pregnancy. Sharon said, โWhat hit me next was the huge lack of information. All the support pointed towards a termination, which wasnโt on the cards for us. There isnโt a specific care pathway if you โdecide to continue the pregnancyโ and the information we wanted just wasnโt there.โ Sharon was eventually signposted to support services by her friend, who has a daughter with Downโs Syndrome. She said, โAt the beginning Elliott went to Kidsโ sensory sessions where I met other parents in similar situations. I was supported with his Disability Living Allowance application and we talked about other groups and opportunities. Every Friday, David heads to the men's shed in Northbridge to participate in woodworking to create things under the guidance of a supervisor. ๐ชต During each session, David selects what he wants to create, crafting items like remote control holders, doorstops, coffee tables, side tables, trays, and more. He has gifted his creations to friends and family, including a special table he made for his sister. The array of tools and equipment at the shed fascinate David, and he enjoys experimenting with them to produce a variety of unique items. ๐คฉ David cherishes these sessions for the opportunity to practice a craft he loves and engage with fellow attendees.
