#DidYouKnow that April is Flooding Awareness Month? Residents of the Potomac River region have been subject to increasingly extreme weather events and rising water levels. This impacts everything from the safety of our drinking water to coastal habitats for endangered species (and our homes, too). We’re already seeing glimpses of flood mitigation efforts in our area, with construction launching on the Potomac River Tunnel and the recent announcement that over 150 cherry trees in the Tidal Basin will be removed to make way for a new sea wall. At Potomac Conservancy, we’re particularly concerned about how regular flooding threatens the positive progress we’ve fought for in the Potomac River. Every uncontrolled flooding event causes urban runoff to dump pollutants and bacteria into our waters. This takes us further from our goal of a swimmable, fishable Potomac for all people. A global study led by Dr. Tony Walker and a team of international researchers has identified 56 companies as the primary contributors to half of the world's plastic pollution, with Coca-Cola being the largest offender, accounting for 11% of branded plastic waste worldwide. The study, which was recently released, highlights a direct relationship between a company's production of plastic and the amount of branded plastic waste found in the environment. This revelation has sparked discussions on potential measures, such as taxation, to combat plastic pollution, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address this global issue. The study conducted by researchers from Dalhousie University and a dozen different universities in the United States, Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Estonia, Chile, Sweden, and the UK found that 56 global companies are responsible for more than half of all branded plastic pollution. Soft drink manufacturers Coca-Cola and Pepsi account for a sixth of the world’s branded plastic waste. Additionally, Nestle, Danone, and Altria are among the top contributors to plastic pollution. Notably, Coca-Cola is identified as the largest contributor, accounting for 11% of the identified plastic waste. The study also highlights that the largest chemical company in the world, Dow, and China’s oil and gas enterprise, Sinopec, are significant contributors to plastic waste. ExxonMobil is the largest single-use plastic waste polluter globally, contributing 5.9 million tonnes. (CNN) — The death toll due to floods in Kenya has risen to 76, with 29 people injured and 19 still missing, a government spokesperson said as authorities ordered more evacuations of people from at-risk areas due to ongoing heavy rainfall. “Nairobi is currently experiencing the highest impact, with a significant death toll of 32 and 16,909 households displaced,” Isaac Maigua Mwaura said in a statement, adding that 24,196 households had been displaced – comprising about 131,450 people. Government and humanitarian agencies have erected 50 camps across the country to house those displaced, Mwaura said. Earlier Friday, a truck carrying people in Makueni County, southern Kenya, “was swept away by raging waters,” according to the Kenyan Red Cross, which described it as “a distressing incident.” The Red Cross has rescued more than 300 people since the onset of the heavy rain in March. Everything should be in some kind of container, plastic storage tote with snap on lid, AIRTIGHT buckets with lid. There will be much MOISTURE in the atmosphere that will make many sick. And the moisture will ruin alot of our supplies. Just ONE Bucket filled with #NavyBeans would last you a great long while. It could probably feed two people, eating once a day, and only eating Navy Beans, probably a little longer than a month. And that is eating nothing but Navy Beans. Imagine When you have a bucket filled with lentils, another filled with rice another filled with some of your other favorite foods. It does not take much to fill these buckets with good foods that will keep us alive during the dark period that we have entered. If your children love cereal, get some buckets and fill them with the cereal they like. Do you drink coffee, tea, fill a bucket with your favorite coffee, sweetener, and creamer. We can eat the same things after a disaster that we eat today IF we prepare today and Stock up on it. Take another bucket and fill it with deodorant, soap, hygiene supplies. Fill another bucket with batteries. What's in your #FirstAid kit? Is it in a waterproof container? Try another bucket. Get one of those huge Sharpe Markers and write what is in each bucket. Write it on all sides and the lid so in a hurry you can just look, from any angle, and see what's in that bucket. This is not to last forever, just to get us THROUGH what is about to happen. It has been reported that 60 companies are responsible for half of all plastics worldwide, of which a handful of big brands have been found to be the original source of a quarter of all plastic pollution globally. Coca-Cola tops the list of these companies. Hey everyone, Emma here 👋 Did you know that due to accelerated global warming, whole islands are being swallowed up by the sea? Slides 2 and 3 show the Solomon Islands, where kilometres of land are being lost to the ocean, and it is our fault. Sea level rise occurs for two reasons: eustatic change and isostatic change. 🌊 Eustatic change is what people tend to think of regarding sea level and climate change; when the sea level itself rises, due to land ice melting and increasing the volume of the water, and also thermal expansion, which occurs when the water temperature increases, causing the molecules to vibrate more and therefore increase the volume of the sea. 🌊 Isostatic change is when the land itself moves, causing the sea level to 'move' relative to the land (even though it doesn't move at all). There are a few categories of isostatic change: isostatic uplifting, downwarping, subsidence, and accretion. 🌊 Uplifting and downwarping occur when a great mass, such as land ice from the last ice age, is removed from the land, causing it to rise upwards as it no longer has any weight on it. This is uplifting, and Scotland, as well as many other places in the world, is experiencing this process. Uplifting in one place causes downwarping in another, where the land opposite to the uplifting area consequently begins to sink. This is happening in the south of England, along with other areas of the world. 🌊 Isostatic subsidence is what the ice, for example, causes, where the land sinks due to matter piled on top of it, which is called isostatic accretion. Climate change causes these eventualities by increasing the temperature of the water and melting land ice. This is part 1 of 2 posts on this matter.
