Today was beach day! Loved loved loved spending all day just hanging with my MW. She’s so precious to me and every moment is so special. I’m so thankful for her. Yes, I have two pairs of glasses on. Thanks to being over 40 I can’t see anything on my phone without my readers and it was too sunny to not have sunglasses. So, I wore two glasses to see the picture I was taking! #beachday #beach #beachlife #carlsbad #carlsbadbeach #llbff #gettingold #cantsee

SEQUENCES ARTISTS Alma Heikkilä and Antti Laitinen Alma Heikkilä lives and works in Helsinki. She is a founding member of Mustarinda, a multidisciplinary collective located in the old-growth forests of northern Finland, that hosts residencies at the intersection between art and ecology. Heikkilä is fascinated by the collective activities of soil creatures, from nematodes to fungi, spores to mycelium. Finding form in sculpture and large-scale painting, she strives to create a space for humans to imagine an up-close encounter or experience with the invisible processes that occur in the soil, often at the microscopic level. Antti Laitinen lives and works in Somero, Finland. He uses photography, sculpture, video, performance, installation, and conceptual objects as his media. He draws inspiration from his everyday environment by deconstructing it – collecting, cutting, bending, digging, and rearranging. Requiring hours of physical effort and activity to create, his works inspire contemplation of our relationship with the environment. The artist often uses wood that grows or is found from his surroundings in the Finnish countryside, making this an easy material to manipulate with loads of possibilities. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia klingogbang

SEQUENCES EXHIBITION VENUES The Sequences XI group exhibition will be divided into four chapters between four local institutions, which will provide a glimpse into the spaces that cannot usually be perceived by the human eye. THE LIVING ART MUSEUM – SUBTERRAIN This is the subterranean underworld – the layers of terrestrial Earth revealing themselves. It is an environment where the processes of growth start and where they ultimately diffuse. As a mole, we dig ourselves through the pitch black tunnels, smelling the earth, decay and sulphurous compounds. Here is the huge dark Core of the Earth, slowly breathing and moving in its own rhythm; an altar for the underworld, made of clay; a painting born out of silt, gathered from a recent human-led catastrophe. The ground remembers, but it also absorbs, digests and finally loses all traces of what's ever been. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia nylistasafnid

SEQUENCES ARTISTS Anna Líndal and Daiga Grantina Anna Líndal works and lives in Reykjavik, Iceland. Her practice focuses on questions related to how the world is measured and quantified, physically and theoretically, and realises works that deal with questions such as how colliding human and geological time scales manifest in objects and environments. The artist has taken part in research expeditions to Surtsey and the works were made possible by the kind permission of the science team that contributed to the SUSTAIN drilling project on Surtsey in 2017. Daiga Grantina is an artist born in Latvia, who lives and works in Paris. She creates large-scale sculptural assemblages that emulate the natural world, often resembling terrariums and vegetation. Her laboured configurations employ synthetic materials and incorporate conflicting physical qualities: soft and hard, transparent and opaque, mobile and static, strong and weak. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia nylistasafnid

SEQUENCES ARTISTS Monika Czyżyk and Jussi Kivi Monika Czyżyk is a visual artist based in Helsinki. She works primarily with the moving image in the context of experimental documentaries and socially engaged projects. For sequences her work is a set of 10 window paintings painted using scavenged clay. Using her hands and different tools on the wet clay, the resulting series of drawings and paintings are inspired by the volcanic landscape, energy portals, legends and myths, and spiritual encounters, rhythmically composed using the material of clay. Jussi Kivi is a Finnish artist who lives and works in Helsinki. Over the past two decades, Kivi’s work has revolved around his explorations of wastelands and remote and often neglected underground locations in both Finland and other countries. He mainly uses photographs, drawings and installations. In his works for Sequences, Jussi Kivi points out structures that are often out of view for the average person but which actually underpin our entire civilisation. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia nylistasafnid

SEQUENCES ARTISTS Hrund Atladóttir and Katja Novitskova Reflecting on Iceland’s traditions and folklore, Hrund Atladottir, will project a new video work which will be based on the old practice of útisetur, spending time dwelling in and connecting to nature. Different dimensions collide together including real landscapes, dreams, subconscious drawings and artificial intelligence to form a whole in a space that is a type of portal, a space somewhere in the in-between. Katja Novitskova is an artist from Estonia, based in Berlin. In her works she raises the question of how an entirely technologized future might look. Novitskova’s oeuvre is situated at the intersection of visual culture and science fiction, inducing discomfort and estrangement by blending futuristic fantasy with everyday reality. The artist often shows the visual world produced by machines that can access places not possible for the human eye to see. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia klingogbang nordichouseiceland

THE NORDIC HOUSE – WATER Deep ocean surrounds the island and a soggy swamp surrounds the exhibition house. Massive waves and an endless abyss create visions of mythical creatures swimming around abandoned infrastructures, left there from an unknown time. The water moves towards the shore, carrying layers of time and ruins of the past. The heavy darkness of the depths of the ocean hides many secrets, and legends tell of monsters, terrifying when woken from their eternal sleep. When wandering in the swampy grounds, the sounds of those whose voices have not been heard are by their side. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter nylistasafnid klingogbang ccaestonia nordichouseiceland

SEQUENCES ARTISTS Anna Niskanen and Naima Neidre Anna Niskanen (b. 1990) is a Finnish visual artist who lives and works in Helsinki and works with alternative photographic processes, creating large-scale installations of handmade prints. An overarching theme in her body of work is the memory of place and nature. She builds an archive of photographs and ecofacts collected while visiting places, and uses the material to create new compositions. She has worked at the SÍM residency and Íslensk Grafík in Reykjavík periodically since 2018. Naima Neidre (b. 1943) is a printmaker and illustrator, based in Tallinn, who has been active since the 1970s. A motif characteristic into her work is a dense, dynamic grid with different characters – underwater creatures, people engaged in somewhat mysterious activities, fantastic animals and lush plants – that form an integrated whole in the picture space. The imagery is abstract and fantastical, capturing the viewer’s imagination and sharpening their focus on the whole emerging from the details. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia klingogbang nordichouseiceland nylistasafnid

SEQUENCES ARTISTS Gústav Geir Bollason and Guðrún Vera Hjartardóttir Gústav Geir Bollason (b. 1966) is an artist and filmmaker who lives in the north of Iceland, in the small coastal village of Hjalteyri, where he manages the local art space “Verksmiðjan á Hjalteyri”. Bollason’s artistic practice is primarily a response to the landscape and the life it harbours. Creating drawings, found-object sculptures, animations, videos, and films, he often combines these media in installations that give rise to fictional extensions of reality. Guðrún Vera Hjartardóttir (b. 1966) is an Icelandic artist whose practice centres mainly around sculpture and installation. She works on the border between the imagined and reality, her works often create a win- dow into other worlds or dimensions, taking on fantastic and sometimes uncanny shapes and bringing on feelings that contest traditional binary thinking patterns. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia klingogbang nylistasafnid nordichouseiceland

WORKS IN PUBLIC SPACE Dénes Farkas , Nothing Makes Sense, 2023. The series of photographs exhibited on the vast tank next to the Marshall house are based on the artist’s travels to the Global Seed Vaults is Svalbard and Lebanon which are secure backup facilities for the world’s crop diversity, providing security for the world’s food supply against the loss of seeds due to many possible scenarios, including war, disease or natural disasters. It also includes photos from the Institute in Sh Petersburg where academic seed research first started and where scientists died of hunger while protecting their research objects during the second world war. The world seed supplies may seem endless and well protected in the vaults; however, they rather resemble the posters on the tank: fragile and dependent on the environment and human decisions. Dénes Farkas (b. 1974) is a Hungarian-Estonian photo and installation artist based in Tallinn. The project connected to the Global Seed Vaults was presented already in 2017 and had begun a few years before. His interest in the topic came from the artist’s longtime interest in the aesthetics of boredom which he tried to explore when visiting the vaults. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter ccaestonia klingogbang nylistasafnid

SEQUENCES EXHIBITION VENUES The Sequences XI group exhibition will be divided into four chapters between four local institutions, which will provide a glimpse into the spaces that cannot usually be perceived by the human eye. THE HOUSE OF COLLECTIONS - THE METAPHYSICAL REALM Enter the metaphysical realm, the world where linear and rational truths are questioned. The search for new forms and artistic explorations takes the form of twisted geometries, tangled spheres and absorbing spirals. Here we start diffusing the tortured lines between imagination and reality, uncertainty and knowledge to enmesh the fixed understandings of necessity and possibility. The mind needs to be shifted both at the individual and societal level in order to make room for the new which might as well also be a long forgotten truth. #SequencesXI #SequencesArtFestival #cantsee icelandicartcenter klingogbang nylistasafnid ccaestonia listasafnislands
