Wow! What an eventful day! I started off my morning by visiting a Charity LAN event in Ypsilanti, Michigan called Gamers for Giving. I stopped at a food truck there and got an insanely good mushroom melt. ๐ In the afternoon I visited a friend to help her pack up parts of her house because she was moving. So far he has gotten all his wishes, IHOP for breakfast, donuts and his first visit to his therapy center, Rehab Without Walls since the week after Christmas!! Second-year Sport & Event Marketing and Management students are collaborating with Gamers Outreach and the Medicine Hat Health Foundation for a fundraiser this month!โ โ On Feb. 16, community members may participate in PJโs for a Purpose, wearing their pajamas to work and school in exchange for a $5 donation to the cause.โ โ Setting a fundraising goal of $5000, the students plan to use the proceeds to purchase a complete video gaming system for the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital's pediatric unit, including an Xbox, multiple controllers, a cart for portability and sanitization, and a small HD television for game display. โ โ Second year SEMM student, Madison Thompson, says the contribution is intended to help improve the hospital stay for children and families as they navigate recovery. Our Kind Leader Spotlight this week shines on the founder of Gamers Outreach, Zach Wigal! @gamersoutreach @zachwigal When he was in high school, Zach developed a passion for competitive video game tournaments and began organizing his own grassroots events โ only for a local public safety official to shut down their first esports tournament three days before the competition. Still determined to host it, Zach and his friends organized Gamers For Giving, a new event that promotes connection making and positivity among players. This then developed the Gamers Outreach Foundation, expanding their mission beyond competition. Zach was introduced to staff at C.S. Mott Childrenโs Hospital of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and this led him to a new initiative that Gamers Outreach could take on: creating accessible play for kids during treatment. The organization created the GO Kart, a portable gaming kiosk that is easy to sanitize, deploy, and develop, so any pediatric hospital staff can set up patients with a place to play. Chemo + Immunotherapy: Day 2 Pryce had a pretty good Friday. The first โdayโ of chemo & infusions went well. We spent the day hanging out in our room. Pryce played Minecraft with the Video Game Guy. We had big plans to go for a walk around the floor once he was unhooked from his IV pole, but his round-the-clock dose of Benadryl hit hard and he fell asleep. He slept until we had to wake him for his 9pm meds & to start todayโs round of chemos & other infusions. Itโs currently pasted midnight, and Pryce & I are still wide awake and working through his daily pills. We are both going to need a couple days after this hospital stay to fix our awake & sleeping hours.
