Our herbal intern Moana has been experimenting with drying haws from our Chinese Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) trees and making them into teas and syrups. These trees are the epitome of permaculture multi-functionality - edible and medicinal, stock fodder/browse (palatable to cattle, horses, chooks and ducks), shelterbelts/win breaks, and aesthetically pleasing in spring blossom, fruit production and autumn leaf. They are tolerant of all types of soil and extremes of wet and dry, as well as atmospheric pollution - what more could you ask for! The fruit on both these and the scarlet haws (C. ellwangeriana) we also grow are much larger than the teensy fruit you see growing on the weedy roadside plants (typically C. monogyna) and therefore much easier and quicker to harvest.
