In November 2012 I was living in a dream. I had just CRUSHED my third year of medical school, and through diet and exercise, I had lost 100 pounds! I was using my newfound physical freedom to explore amazing challenges such as triathlons, mud runs, skydiving, and even a full Marathon! At that time, I was training for my biggest physical challenge yet, the Goofy challenge. The Goofy challenge is an event at Walt Disney where you run a 13.1-mile half marathon on a Saturday, and then run a 26.2 mile marathon on the following day. I was training hard, and excited for Race Day when my Dream turned into a nightmare... Out of nowhere my training runs started getting cut short by violent coughing spells. I went from peak condition, to not being able to walk a flight of stairs without becoming short of breath. Something was WRONG with me. On December 12th, 2012, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I watched the race results from a hospital bed. In the months that followed I endured chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and multiple surgeries but I finally beat it! Since then, I have had to restart my medical education from day 1, as well as lose 100 pounds AGAIN just to reclaim my life. The Dopey challenge is the same as the Goofy challenge, except it adds a 5k and 10k run in the two days prior to the half marathon. I have partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a Part of Team in Training (TNT) to take the Dopey Challenge! By participating as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) TNT, I am raising funds to help find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients like me. After being a boss and handling her long day at All Children’s at an appointment with her new oncologist Parker got a sweet treat on the way home! I really like Parker’s new doctor. We left with questions answered and a plan for going forward! Parker has been fighting a high fever for over ten days with no progress. She’s exhausted. I’m exhausted. She’s been to multiple doctors in this time with no answers or improvements. Today we finally got what we hope is the right answer. Parks began treatment for walking pneumonia. UPDATE: So I did have my PET scan done on Tuesday, thankfully! I also had my first chemo treatment yesterday. Everything went well. I had no reactions to any of the meds and overall it wasn't that bad. They don't typically allow a support person to come back with you, but, fortunately, Eric was able to come back and sit with me for most of my treatment. I'm grateful he got to be with me for my first treatment, at least!! I also was able to see my doctor yesterday and she was able to give me my PET scan results. First, I would like to say my treatment will stay the same. We are on track for everything that needs to be done to beat this. The PET scan results did show that the cancer isn't just in my cervix. It has spread to the lymph nodes on each side of my cervix, it is in my spine, my sternum, several of my ribs, and my right arm. This puts me at a Stage IV (4). My doc said Stage IV Lymphoma is a little different than Stage IV in other cancers and it is curable. I will continue with my chemo and have another scan after my 4th round. Once chemo is complete, I will start radiation. Overall, my prognosis is the same: IT IS CURABLE! I still need all of the prayers and support I can get, and we will beat this!! Well, I gotta say, I hate the vet. But I DO love MY vet, because she ran test after test after Mommy noticed my glands under my chin were swollen. And she takes me in the back to examine me because I am better in the back than in the exam room. And she spends tons of time with my parents to explain everything that’s going on with me (or not going on or maybe going on) to Mom and Dad. AND she calls AFTER her shift to give results to them because she knows her clients love their pets more than anything. AND she helped us find what is called “indolent lymphoma.” Yup. That’s what I have. BUT we may have caught it early enough!! “Indolent” may mean that we don’t even need to treat it yet!! AND, finally, she made the appointment yesterday with the oncologist with whom we are meeting today (and treated my pancreatitis that was bothering me yesterday). I hate and love my vet, Dr. Porfido! Stop telling me I got a free boob job. I mentally prepared for the aftermath of my surgery. I would stand in front of the mirror and imagined my 38C cancerous chest as flat + saggy. To be honest, it helped 🙏My Plastic Surgeon was gentle with me. I had so much consuming my mental space. I knew what surgery I should do, I just needed help to get there. I was looking out the window this morning where he would frequently bird watch, and a bright red cardinal lands in front of me and stares right at me. This has been a grueling year that has tested me beyond anything else. Maybe not crawling 500 yards through raw prison sewage grueling, but it must be close… This has been a year of feeling sick and exhausted every other week, a year of missed emails/messages/texts/plans, a year of taking things very slow, and a year of just feeling isolated from “real life” at times. I want to thank everybody for their understanding and patience with me, as some weeks, I had three days to cram in all of my life before I went down again for another round. As I enter my final “bad week” of dealing with the after effects of the chemo, I can finally start looking to the great big beautiful tomorrow that’s coming my way. Finally decided to go to emergency. They did bloodwork, ultrasound, they saw gallstones in my bladder and lots of swollen lymph nodes which alerted them. We decided to do a ct scan to further investigate. Got admitted to the hospital and 1 day later I had the surgeon come in my room who said I had to remove my gallbladder. Later that day he brought me an oncologist to my room to give me her opinion. That was scary. That day the oncologist said my body was full of disease and it looked like lymphoma. They don’t diagnose based on picture only through a biopsy so the oncologist told me while being under removing the gallbladder that they were going to do a biopsy to confirm. The biopsy came back with 2 possibilities. It was between castleman’s disease and lymphoma. Did a pet scan for further investigation. After that there was a board meeting with a few docs to discuss my results and it was confirmed stage 4 follicular lymphoma. I was told it had spread everywhere, on the groin, arm pits, neck, supraclavicular, top and bottom of the diaphragm, even in the bone marrow😱 Only God knows for how long I was walking around so sick without knowing. Oblivious to all my symptoms. Today I completed my 5th treatment, safe to say it’s working, everything is 85% gone! She had retired already, spent her tiny 401k to live off of and buy what she thought would be her future business… The life insurance policy I found was no longer valid.. as that company went out of business 20 years ago.. I knew I would do whatever was needed… I had saved money over 25 years.. I would use that and worry about it later. That’s what I did.. and then had a benefit to buy her headstone.. that still wasn’t enough… Eventually I got it out, paid for it and had nothing for my bills..
