🎗️P L A N 🎗️ . I bet any person you talk to with leukemia will tell you how awful steroids are. Us kids get them in pretty high dosages and end them with no tapering every 90 days for five days straight and it’s ROUGH! . We call it a steroid pulse and in the past they have reeked havoc on my body and emotions. This time we prepared before hand and have introduced a few things that have been helping. . Typically Im restless all night, I eat so much I get sick, my body feels like it my skin is crawling and my emotions are ALL OVER THE PLACE. . 🎗️So this week I went food shopping with my mom and very special friends gave my gift cards and even dropped off my favored snacks. 🎗️My mom and dad keep me busy when my body isn’t resting. When I’m busy I focus less on how I’m feeling. 🎗️I’ve been sleeping with a weighted blanket which really helps my remain settled at night. 🎗️I’m staying SUPER hydrated with water and Gatorade and I’m taking medicine to help me not be constipated and have belly aches. 🎗️When I’m angry or sad we have a plan to help me work through it all. . This weekend I played Tball, played football, went to the movies, has my best friend over for pizza, and played with my friends all afternoon today. . Mom is packing me extra snacks and drinks for school tomorrow and I’m going to enjoy the warm day it’s supposed to be! . 🎗️P I L L S🎗️ . Yesterday is done and I officially only have three more spinal taps left in treatment. Yesterday also kicks off what we call a “steroid pulse.” I wrote in my post yesterday that I was going to bring you all along on a week in the life of a brave kid, and it starts with this. . This is my pillbox, which is a little extra for this week because of the steroids. I will take steroids for five straight days along with my other at home chemo medication. They’re another 5 1/2 pills not pictured that I only take on Thursdays that we keep in a separate container. . In the past this week has been very rough for me because steroids cause a lot of emotions, changes in my sleeping habits, and insane hunger at all hours. . Today we are going to go food shopping to stock up on all of my steroid craving favorite, such as potatoes and bagel bites. . I’ll definitely take a lot of naps in the coming week and my mom and dad try to keep me busy with activities plus I have football and baseball this week. . “The Woodwork” ❤️ I have had so many (amazing) unexpected conversations since I was diagnosed with cancer in 2017. I’ve connected with strangers whose lives have been touched by cancer, people who could/can relate to my health journey, and re-connected with people from various phases of my life (usually through a DM, text or email). Some of these reconnections go as far back as kindergarten. 🥹❤️ I cannot even begin to explain how much these (often brief) encounters mean to me. After sharing that I had cancer, some people reached out, opened up and shared deep/personal stories about their own life with me (sometimes cancer related, but most of the time they were not cancer related). Trauma and intense grief can be relatable… and it can lead to healing when you talk about it with someone who understands those experiences and emotions (even if the way they experienced it was different). This campaign has sparked a lot of these conversations again, and I LOVE IT. Supporting someone going through cancer can be hard to navigate if you’ve never been close to anyone who has had it. The easiest thing that you can do is be the person who comes “out of the woodwork” to just let someone know that they are strong, capable and loved. Even if it has been years or it’s a co-worker you don’t know very well. That quick connection might mean everything to them, but it can also provide you with more insight into how much more you can offer (your time/help, food, money, friendship, etc.). 🎗️LTM Cycle 4🎗️ . Tomorrow is an early day as I head into the hospital for my fourth cycle of LONG TERM MAINTENANCE which is the second phase of my treatment. The first phase, frontline, was all of last year. . Tomorrow I will have blood work done, get my IV, see my favorite nurses and doctors, get Vincristine chemotherapy, then get my spinal tap, sleep, get some fluids and then head home. Tomorrow will be my 17th spinal tap. SEVENTEENTH! I need 20 all together. . When I get a spinal tap they take some of my spinal fluid to test for leukemia cells and then they push chemo directly into my spine to prevent any cancer cells from popping up. My type of leukemia likes to hide in spines (and testicles.) . This round of chemo I’m going to document from tomorrow morning, through the day, and then for the week that follows. So I hope you join me to see a day in the life of a brave kid! Also….tomorrow is Perry’s Birthday!!!! . I’m very nervous tonight. I hope I can sleep. Think of me tomorrow and next week ❤️ . In 2020 I had a disposable camera when I had cancer (leukaemia) that I would take photos on & I had the photos developed this week. Each pic is described below. 🫶🦋 1. After almost a year of chemotherapy this was my final day. I was so happy I did my hair that day because I wanted to feel pretty in my chemo chair. I also wore my favourite tracksuit at the time that had butterflies on it to symbolise the new journey I was embarking on. 2. I had sepsis here and was finally allowed to go home after being treated in isolation in the hospital for a week (due to Covid no visitors were allowed). In order to save my life they had to stop chemotherapy and treat the sepsis with a few different antibiotics. At this stage I had hospital in the home coming to me each day to replace the pump with antibiotics in it that you can see. This was attached 24/7 in my PICC line to release the antibiotics. I remember I was so bummed because it meant my chemotherapy was delayed and I would have more time in the hospital until I was well again. I cried a lot at this time. I was so worried about losing my limbs or life. This was probably the hardest part of my cancer journey. 3 & 4. My mum would make everything home made including bread and sushi so that I could still enjoy food as eating out was too high risk for me. She made me sushi with cooked meat so that I didn’t risk getting unwell from raw meats as my immune system couldn’t take it. 5. Nadia’s Retreat-a special retreat my family and friends put together for me to come home to when I was first released from hospital. They decorated the entire area so that I had a place to relax when I was feeling well enough to sit outside during the long months of chemotherapy. Forever grateful and I can never give back what I was given except for continuous thankyous and gratitude. Seeing these photos fills me with both sadness and joy. 🎗️MRI #8🎗️ . This past week I headed in for my 8th MRI. . Back in January we learned that the brain blood clot I had been battling was finally gone! But in its place (much smaller) was a total blockage - they call it a chronic occlusion. I am not showing any signs of neurological issues or other signs of a problem so they assume my brain has grown new veins around the blockage to continue to bring blood to the blocked portion. Science is wild and my body is awesome! . We met with our neurologist who explained they wanted to watch this blockage to see what it would do once we stopped all blood thinners. So for the past three months we have waited for the next MRI. . Everything is stable! Everything remains the same. This is good news! . It sounds like I am done with MRIs every three months and will have another one in 6 months to a year. . Another step in the right direction! We pray that is continues to remain stable and that no new blood clots form. We pray that my brain continues to build up these collateral veins and this blockage does not affect me in anyway. . The last time I went in for my magic potions was February 7th. I have had a good amount of time to recover, feel a little more “normal”, and my hair has had time to grow in a little bit! Looks like I may be a silver fox after all of this! I’m heading back into Gibson at Maine Med today for the next round of high dose Cytarabine that will be given over the next several days. I’m hopeful that I continue to tolerate it well and have an uneventful recovery when I get back to Mome and Pete’s at the end of the week. In November 2012 I was living in a dream. I had just CRUSHED my third year of medical school, and through diet and exercise, I had lost 100 pounds! I was using my newfound physical freedom to explore amazing challenges such as triathlons, mud runs, skydiving, and even a full Marathon! At that time, I was training for my biggest physical challenge yet, the Goofy challenge. The Goofy challenge is an event at Walt Disney where you run a 13.1-mile half marathon on a Saturday, and then run a 26.2 mile marathon on the following day. I was training hard, and excited for Race Day when my Dream turned into a nightmare... Out of nowhere my training runs started getting cut short by violent coughing spells. I went from peak condition, to not being able to walk a flight of stairs without becoming short of breath. Something was WRONG with me. On December 12th, 2012, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I watched the race results from a hospital bed. In the months that followed I endured chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and multiple surgeries but I finally beat it! Since then, I have had to restart my medical education from day 1, as well as lose 100 pounds AGAIN just to reclaim my life. The Dopey challenge is the same as the Goofy challenge, except it adds a 5k and 10k run in the two days prior to the half marathon. I have partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a Part of Team in Training (TNT) to take the Dopey Challenge! By participating as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) TNT, I am raising funds to help find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients like me. Welp I got my ass handed to me today. 57 mile ride with just under 5,000’ of climbing. The last climb (7miles to the finish) just about did me in. I was feeling sick and wanted to quit. My teammate Carol kept me going tho. She’s 61 and a supremely strong rider and she saved me. I hope to be like Carol when I’m 61. Hell, I hope to be like Carol now. Everyone needs a Carol. Every year, over 178,000 people in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, accounting for almost 1 out of 3 cancers. @llsusa runs an annual Visionaries of the Year campaign, a 10 week fundraising competition where candidates in cities across the country compete to raise the most funds for LLS to support their efforts to find a cure for blood cancer. This year, my wonderful friend @lcflatley was nominated as a Visionaries of the Year candidate and I am honored to joined her team to raise $100,000 by June 6th! I’m writing to ask for your support of our campaign. My personal goal is to contribute at least $10,000 in the next 49 days and I need your help and support! Any amount you can contribute ($10, $50, $100) would genuinely help make a difference!
