The Wandering Mojave Weed Workshop has concluded! Turnout was not as high as interest, but that's just fine. Even though only two people arrived for the onsite, the process generated $50 in donations to @nalcorg , $75 to the @mojavedesertlandtrust , and $25 for the @oceanconservancy . On top of the $150 in donations to 501c3's, I received $50, which is fair trade for the research I did on invasives. If you missed the class, which most did ;) but still want to ply my expertise around native flora and fauna, and managing invasives on your property, I would be thrilled to do an at home consultation to set you down the path or re-wilding your high desert property. What happens when you combine a Mojave and Colorado Desert trivia, a herd of desert naturalist geeks, and perhaps more than a few adult beverages? Mayhem. Laughter. And good-natured competition. I am pleased, and perhaps a little embarrassed to say, that the two person team of @nothobogreg of @cliffhangerguides and myself took first place amongst teams that represented the @mojavedesertlandtrust , the @mypubliclands , the @jtnpa , @joshuatreefriends , and the @californiadfw But what does it mean? It means that even though we're not all be formally trained in scientific disciplines, and that just because we work in the private sector, locally owned and operated guide services are on the front lines of daily ecological observations and the creation of land stewards. Not all of the 3,000,000+ visitors to @joshuatreenps are simply tourists. Some are inquisitive, committed to understanding, and seeking deeper connections to the land that these family businesses call home. Roaming around our property, I noticed this fascinating remnant lying on a bed of sand and pebbles. I recognized the shape and texture immediately: It ‘was’ a Cholla, a cactus prevalent in the Mojave Desert. Hikers often refer to this species as ‘Jumping Cactus’ because whenever you come close to one, it seems like the infinite number of ‘spines’ jump onto your clothing, shoes, and at worst….skin! Cholla cacti have wood skeletons. After they die and the water evaporates, after the skin falls off and the desert critters move in – they leave behind some wood. Over time it petrifies. Today we are highlighting Mojave Desert Land Trust, one of California’s Outdoor Equity Grant Program awardees. 🌞 The MDLT has cultivated a multi-faceted conservation strategy that uses land acquisition, restoration, stewardship, plant cultivation, and education to ensure the long-term preservation of the California desert.🏜️ Through the OEP, they were able to fund their Outdoor Yucca Valley Outdoor Equity Program for residents near Yucca Valley Elementary School in the City of Yucca Valley. “In 2023 we were able to connect 211 young people with the desert through the OEP Grant [and] in 2024 we expect to at least meet that same number for young people and their families through community activities. “We at MDLT are grateful for this opportunity to connect more people with the desert in an authentic and meaningful way. Many people in our community, especially youth, have traditionally not had access to nature. Through our grant from the State of California’s Outdoor Equity Program, we have been able to bring more of a connection and sense of exploration to our public lands. Equal access to the outdoors positively impacts people in creating future stewards who are proud of their homes. We hope to continue this work, bringing more and more people out to discover the wonder of the desert landscape. It is invaluable to personal development and can help lessen the sense of nature deficit in the young. Whenever I find populations in @joshuatreenps I make sure to upload the observations to @inaturalistorg which helps the park track and sometimes deal with these populations. There are significant populations on Quail Mtn, Johnny Lang Canyon, areas west of Nolina Peak adjoining lands managed by the @mojavedesertlandtrust , along the Bigfoot Trail as it climbs west out of Quail Wash, the Pinto Basin, and others that are away from easy to reach roadside populations. Devil’s Punchbowl. So much going on here. There at 8 Natural Areas or Nature Centers in Los Angeles county. This is my favorite. It really gives you mini Grand Canyon vibes. This place was virtually wiped off the map by the Bobcat Fire. Even the parking lot was cracked by the heat. Only one of the original buildings survived. Appreciation without cynicism is something I'm relearning as an adult, and these poems and art from over 100 hi desert children are great examples of this in practice. WooooHoooo! I was finally able to participate in one of the native plant sales put on by the @mojavedesertlandtrust I picked up 6 unique species. With the exception of one (Penstemon incertus), these are all plants that I see on a regular basis.
