I tracked this down on a recent visit to Antwerp after not finding it in a London store. Was disappointed there’s no download code with it: it’s not on CD and I’m not buying it twice just to get the digital so it’s not getting anywhere near the attention it deserves. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks LP (1968, this pressing 2015) Morrison’s second solo album after leaving Them(1966). A wonderful record for summer and one of the great albums of forever. Particularly appreciate John Payne’s flute throughout, plus Larry Fallon’s strings, all of which help this sit well with another huge favourite, Nico’s Chelsea Girl. Actually arranger Larry Fallon contributed to both albums. His work, added afterwards to both records, wasn’t welcomed by either Van nor Nico - but, for me, it brings the nostalgia, providing a portal to an unobtainable, idealised past. It’s why I love them. Gen X - Dancing With Myself 7” (1980) By this point, Generation X had lost two original members and were attempting to move forward with Keith Forsey on board as producer*. It’s an excellent single that everyone knows and yet it wasn’t a hit (crazy!). Inspired by Tokyo clubbers spotted dancing with mirror reflections of themselves on the band’s 1979 visit to Japan. Was remixed and rereleased a few months later as part of an EP to launch Billy Idol’s solo career. Don’t know what they were thinking with the cover design. *Wikipedia says both Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) and Steve New (Rich Kids) contributed guitar here after Derwood had quit. The Cult - Edie (Ciao Baby) 7” (1989) I’ve been wanting to post something by The Cult for a while but never sure which album to go for. Almost compromised with a compilation but in the end went for this tribute to Edie Sedgwick and it’s reference to the film Ciao! Manhattan (1972)* A great single / tribute - as Ian Astbury tells it: always said you were a youthquaker, Edie! There’s an acoustic version out there also worth locating too. And don’t overlook the excellent b-side here, Bleeding Heart Grafitti, which is a bit of an ear worm at the moment... at least one sleepless night! Love The Cult but they don’t make them like this anymore. Missed my chances of seeing them live and no desire to catch up with them in 2024. A small consolation is I did at least see Southern Death Cult and Death Cult! Not the same though is it?! *contrary to popular belief, Ciao! Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions - Bavarian Fruit Bread Promo CD (2001) Hope’s project with Colm Ó Ciosóig (My Bloody Valentine) which developed during a Mazzy Star period of inactivity in the 00s. This was the first of three albums (to date) and I’d go as far as to say my favourite of all Hope’s albums. And that’s saying a lot. You may recall Hope contributed vocals to the Jesus and Mary Chain classic Sometime Always (1994)? Well, that connection goes a little deeper and here the album opens with an older Mary Chain song, Drop(from 1989). This promo pressing has different artwork to the general release and sits well with the two singles out around the same time, so I’m sharing those too: At The Doorway Again (2000) Suzanne (2002) ... both have non album bonus tracks. Brian Eno - Music For Films LP (1978) Purchased upon release - I’m assuming a promo copy - there’s a nice press pack enclosed... This is the official release, not the 1976 (much sought after) film industry promotional disc which had a different tracklisting*. To add a little extra confusion, when this got rereleased in 1982, the running order was amended (keeping the same tracks) - and that version remained the standard until reverting back to this in the 2010s. Great album - it is evolution in progress between Another Green World (1975) and Music For Airports (1979). A great, hugely enjoyable album over the past decade that I’ve never stopped playing. However: More often than not, I don’t read the credits on records anymore* which means relevant info can pass me by. So... I had no idea… Production collaborator since the first album was Richard Gottehrer. You may know him for My Boyfriend’s Back (The Angels, 1963), Sire Records co-founder and also producer of the first two Blondie albums. You probably already have an idea what this sounds like. Then, the icing on the cake, the only other musician here is Sune Rose Wagner (Raveonettes) - now you see the full picture. P.M.Dawn - Jesus Wept CD (1995) Like yesterday’s post, I’m revisiting another 90s group who’ve slipped off the radar. All four of their albums are incredible / consistent / timeless and, to use a P.M.Dawn word, blissful. Unfortunately, they were on a downward trajectory from their first hit as far as sales went. I’ve chosen the third album today for no real reason other than most never get this far on the P.M.Dawn journey. Which is such a shame. Incudes their (all too short) version of Once In Lifetime - breathing life into a song I’ve long been sick of hearing. Deep Purple, 808 State and Joni Mitchell are amongst those sampled, but ultimately it was Prince Be’s vision that gave such joyful albums. A talent more than under appreciated, and sadly with us no more. The five Morphine studio albums (plus an oddities compilation) - all CD (1990s): Good (1992) Cure The Pain (1993) Yes (1995) Like Swimming (1997) The Night (2000) B-sides and Otherwise (1997 compilation) Recently completed my Morphine collection and everything’s been on non stop play these past few weeks to the point were every album blends into the next one and the only difference I can make out is that I don’t care too much for Yes. But everything else is beyond incredible. A unique singular sound. Essentially a jazz trio* - baritone sax and bass as lead instruments. Ralph Dorper’s Eraserhead 12” and Eraserhead Original Soundtrack LP (both 1982) Ralf Dörper (Die Krupps and then Propaganda) sound collage paying hommage to both Eraserhead and Assault On Precinct 13. Four tracks: Assault Eraserhead Lorelei Im Himmel ... this is actually a compilation of two earlier 7”s by Dörper under different guises - Double Feature (1980) and Die Lemminge (1981). At this particular point in time, I would have been obsessed with David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) and desperate to get In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song) into my collection. That’s how and why I own this, because the film soundtrack - also shown - took a while to arrive in London. Eventually located on import at 58 Dean Street Records (which was the go to soundtrack store in Soho in those days - sadly missed). The Pale Fountains - Pacific Street LP (1984) The Pale Fountains intitally came to my attention with their single Thank You (1982) which predates this album and isn’t included. I think, by the time this came out, I’d lost interest but I bought it regardless... It’s of its time with a 60s easy listening / bossa nova / Burt Bacharach vibe that a few of their contemporaries were also drawn to* Enjoying it today because I’ve only just found out that Michael Head founded the band! I know!! I’ve been buying Head’s other projects for decades and knew this is where he started out, but never knew he was THE significant one here. In all these years, I never bothered to get this out and play it. Consequently, it’s in absolute perfect condiditon. The dB’s - Stands For Decibels LP (1981) There’re big Big Star connections here: Chris Stamey had already done a stint in Alex Chilton’s band, then set up Car Records and released Chris Bell’s one and only classic single. I say this because, first and foremonst, The dB’s are American power pop sitting comfortably alongside Shoes, Raspberries and, inevitably, Big Star. Their debut single (not included here) was written / produced by Richard Lloyd (Television) before they made this, their first album, for the UK label Albion. As well as their power pop pedigree there’s some post punk UK DNA in here too.. I’m thinking XTC to start with. Malcolm Garrett did the cover. Amen Dunes - Freedom LP (2018, this pressing 2022) Damon McMahon’s fifth Amen Dunes album - but the only one I know. Damon is credited with ‘Hollywood fire moan’ on Dracula - it’s that type of record. Emotive, plaintive vocals and minor chords - let’s call it understated drama - it’s my type of record. Actually, was surprised there’s a band here - it sounds more like a one man studio project - but there you go. Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) contributes. And: Lovely packaging with a nod to Bowie’s Station To Station I think - particularly with the typesetting. Plus beautiful coloured vinyl.
