However, I am forever grateful to the passing tourist who pointed out this beautiful shot of Shark’s Tooth in the Matuktukit Valley (my university playground), with a sheep. I think ordinarily I would have tried to capture the mountains without the sheep, but it the past tourist was right. It’s majestic with the sheep and true to that valley. Around 1984/5 while working with Tim Wallis and Alpine, Robin Cagney developed some helicopter portable ground traps. After years of helicopter hunting pressure on the wild deer populations, the deer were living the daylight hours mostly in the bush. Tim’s vision was for each of his helicopters and crew to run a trap-line of helicopter portable ground traps, trapping deer in the bush. Working with Tim and Alpine crews, Robin developed a number of different trap systems, one that fired a net from above, another that had a net pull up from the ground, with a drawstring around the deer, and the one they settled on, fired a 30’ by 30’ net wall up around the deer, initiated by pressure pads under the leaf litter. Tim had secured access to a French satellite that would monitor the traps. Robin and Tim jointly patented the systems, but alas, they never went into full production or use. Just as the development of these new devices was completed and the concepts tested and proven, the live capture industry came to a halt. The Government had removed a tax incentive on deer, and the price of live deer crashed to meat value overnight. Live capture was no longer economic. The end of a remarkable era. John Forbes stands outside his "Castle Forbes" in the Landsborough, 1928. John Forbes, was a key figure in New Zealand's deer stalking history and a member of the acclimatisation society, Built in 1928, Forbes' castle served as a welcome refuge after long days hunting deer. Compared to the typical canvas shelter used by many, the hut offered a significant upgrade in comfort. The story behind its construction goes beyond Forbes himself. New Zealand attracted many wealthy hunters from abroad, one such figure was Welsh millionaire Godfrey Williams, whose 1927 hunting trip involved an extravagant base camp with over 20 tents. Upon departing in 1928, Williams funded the construction of a permanent hut on Landsborough Flats. Con Hodgkinson and Mark Te Koiti used Williams' donation to build the hut below Strutts Bluff. Initially known as "Con's Castle" after the respected guide, it later gained the name "Forbes' Castle" likely due to Forbes' role as a ranger for the local Acclimatisation Society. The hut eventually became known as the "Rangers' Hut," reflecting this association. The Landsborough Flats, with its easy access to the valley, became a popular location for temporary hunting camps. The permanent hut built in 1928 solidified this trend. With the government's deer culling program starting in 1933, the hut and its nearby horse paddocks became a crucial stopover for hunters venturing deeper into the valley. This practical use cemented the name "Rangers' Hut," much to the dismay of old-time hunters who knew it by its more colourful historical names. The "Rangers' Hut" served its purpose until 1941 when a new building replaced it as the primary base. Day 4/9: Crossing Hokitika Saddle. During the night we were woken by pouring rain and the sound of rocks being tumbled downstream but as we left camp the rain eased. We followed the bouldery riverbank upstream for a few hours and ate lunch at the base of the pass, the water courses still running high and white. Hands full of snow grass or tentatively gripping choss, we gained steady height, only to be battered by a squall of hail and sleet. Day 3/9: With the heavy rain overnight at Park Morpeth Hut the rivers rose. We linked up and safely crossed the Wilberforce opposite the hut and travelled downstream in light rain for an hour and a half, but then reached a steep bouldery side stream that was in flood. We probed upstream for a while considering different crossing points, but none were certain. So we pitched Anna and James tent fly for shelter from the wind and drizzle and rested 5 hours, lunching, sleeping and laughing in our warm nylon bubble. The Ruth Adams rescue stands as one of the toughest in NZ history. In1948, four adventurers climbed Mount La Perouse, Mount Cook National Park. Among them were renowned mountaineer Edmund Hillary, accompanied by Ruth Adams and guides Mick Sullivan and Harry Ayres. Their quest was to conquer the formidable peak via the Hooker Valley route. As they traversed the treacherous terrain, fate dealt a cruel blow. While descending a ridge, Ruth Adams lost her footing on a slick patch of ice, hurtling down the slope. Mick Sullivan, desperately attempting to halt her fall, found the rope between them snapped under the strain. Ruth tumbled down, eventually coming to a halt on a precarious ledge, battered and injured. Assessing Ruth's injuries—a suspected fractured wrist, broken back, abrasions, and concussion—they knew immediate help was paramount. Two of the guides descended to Gardiner Hut, situated near the Hooker Glacier, to summon aid, while Hillary and the others fashioned a snow cave to shelter Ruth from the elements. Assistance arrived in the form of an airdrop, delivering vital medical supplies and equipment. Yet, the formidable task of extracting Ruth from her perilous perch had only just begun. Extra support poured in from Christchurch, assembling a team of 16 seasoned climbers. Descending the steep slopes to the Hooker Glacier was deemed too hazardous, leaving them with the daunting prospect of navigating down the Cook River to the West Coast. Carrying Ruth on a stretcher, the team braved treacherous terrain, from icy walls to moss-covered rocks and slippery tree roots. For four grueling days, relays of six individuals at a time labored tirelessly, hand over hand, to navigate the rugged landscape. Finally, after seven days of effort, Ruth was safely transported to the road's end, where she was whisked away to Fox Glacier and then flown to Christchurch Hospital. Her recovery went well. . . . Paparoa Track Day 2 Ces Clarke Hut to Moonlight Tops Hut 9.7km, 3.5hrs We had another beautiful day, the clouds came and went giving us more stunning views. Cloud Inversion was pretty neat and the boys thought it was awesome being above the clouds. We spotted: a fern bird, a really big spider, Mt Cook in the distance before it disappeared in the clouds and the Ocean. Very exposed on the ridgeline so we were glad it was a nice day. Moonlight hut is a new, very spacious 20 bunk hut with 2 bunkrooms (8 singles in one and 2 platform bunks of 6 in the other) with spectacular views of the escarpment, ocean and can even spot Pororari Hut in the distance. Caesar, the bulldog mascot of 'A' company, 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, deployed to the Somme with his Battalion as a Red Cross dog. Caesar’s job, like thousands of Red Cross dogs, was to find wounded soldiers on the battlefield. They were trained to look for living soldiers, and left the dead. Dogs, with their superior sense of smell were well suited to locating soldiers in areas where they might have been missed by humans. Amazingly, dogs were trained to differentiate between allied and enemy uniforms , so as not to lead search parties to possibly armed enemies and could respond to an array of hand signals. Caesar was personally responsible for locating many men who were wounded on the Somme battlefield, many of who would not have survived with out the brave bulldogs help. Sadly Caesar was killed in action and found in No Man's Land alongside a soldier who had died with his hand resting on Caesar's head. Most likely, Caesar had come across the wounded man and they had died together. Caesar was buried with the soldier he had found and with others, near the Casualty Clearing Station. Rifleman Tooman, Caesar's handler, was understandably very upset, but went on. After being severely gassed in battle, he recovered with the help of Kath, a Volunteer Aid Detachment Nurse he had met in France, who he later married. They hung a portrait of Caesar in their dining room after they returned to NZ. In February 2019 at the National Army Museum a Blue Cross Medal was awarded to 'Ceaser'. He is NZ’s first recipient of the medal which is open to pets that have done something brave, have life changing partnerships, are assistance animals or serving or working animals. . . . One last slip n slide down #whenimnotsewing adventure alley before I show you the beaut things I’ve been sewing since 😄 Hands up if you’ve done the Haks in Ngaruawahia? And felt that hurt? We’ll add a few more stairs to total 2020 and then you’re a third of the way up to Mueller hut, Aoraki National Park aka where all good screensavers are made. Though this was only a day walk for us, up n back for a hut lunch, it was an absolute highlight of our trip to head out in the dark and mist and walk (me climb like a parcor alpine barbie) through such interesting terrain of rocks and snow and bright blue hues! We didn’t realise how busy and sceney this walk was till our decent and seeing hundreds of people coming up in their backpack-free-but-sling-a-sweater-over-the-shoulder activewear 😅 Atleast take a bumbag guyssss cmon 😂 though I think most folks just go to the instafamous Sealy Tarns at the top of the 2020 steps. My recommendation is go further, all the way to the hut, check that forecast, take loads of water, and snack rewards in the form of PB wraps, ibuprofen rub for the damn knees, and head out early as poss - magical! We are fortunate living at Lake Hāwea as there is so much to do on our doorstep. Last week @jo_stilwell and I got away for five days with the start of the tramp only 10 mins drive from home. It’s definitely autumn now with shorter days and cooler temperatures, but still great to be in the hills. We headed up over Breast Hill and down into Tīmaru Creek before coming back via the tops between Tīmaru Creek and the Dingle Burn, with an ascent of Maungatika, and out via Moonlight & Roses hut. Here are a few pics from the trip. Pic 1 – our favourite camp site with Maungatika behind, morning of day 4. Pic 2 – dropping down towards Stodys Hut with the Tīmaru catchment beyond, day 1. Pic 3 – morning coffee stop in Tīmaru Creek, day 2. Pic 4 – back up high again after climbing out of Tīmaru Creek – Breast Hill somewhere in the distance, day 2. Pic 5 – cooking dinner at the end of day 2. Pic 6 – heading down from the summit of Maungatika in less than ideal weather, day 3. New Zealand Forest Service (NZFS) hunter candidates going through their training course, on the tops near Dip Flat. During the 1960s the NZFS operated a hunter training camp at Dip Flat and 500 men went through the gruelling programme under the watchful eye of Harry Ferris. In the 19th century, New Zealand welcomed exotic animals for various purposes like food, fur, trophy hunting, and to attract tourists. Legislation was introduced to protect these animals as their populations grew. By 1927, protection for red deer in State Forests was lifted, and by 1930, the introduced animals had become an economic nuisance. To combat this, the Department of Internal Affairs launched deer control operations. Skilled hunters, called cullers, were sent to the backcountry to systematically hunt deer. To accommodate them, bivvies and later huts were built. The Noxious Animals Act of 1956 transferred the responsibility for controlling wild animals to the Forest Service. The scale and professionalism of the operations were so impressive that a specialised cullers training school was established at Dip Flat, Nelson. In addition to the school the Forest Service constructed numerous standardised huts to support the culling efforts. State-funded deer culling operations continued until the early 1970s. But then, driven by the lucrative European market, commercial venison hunters operating from helicopters emerged, gradually replacing the Forest Service cullers. Keiko Agatsuma was known as the ‘Japanese woman cave dweller of Stewart Island’. She left Japan for New Zealand, looking for something different. She arrived in Christchurch in mid-August 1978. First she travelled by herself around the lower South Island, then headed over to Oban in Halfmoon Bay on Stewart Island. Farmers Tim and Ngaire Te Aika got to know Keiko better than anyone else. “Lots of things impressed us about the woman,” recalls Tim. “She was reasonably well educated for a start, you could just tell by the way she enquired about things. And she came across as completely honourable and honest. Whenever she came for a meal, she insisted on working or helping to pay for what she had, either helping Ngaire with the chores or me out on the farm. Particularly she was interested in all the animals we had –sheep, dogs, chooks, ducks – she loved them all." "She would’ve lived here forever if she had the chance.” Soon she became more adventurous and went exploring. Walking south to Doughboy Bay, she came across a big dry cave just in from the beach at the southern end and moved in. Here she lived on the last of her provisions and prizing paua off the rocks with an old screwdriver that Tim had given her. Sadly just when Keiko got set up, she got sick. Some hunters were heading down the beach when they noticed Keiko, obviously not well. When they investigated, they found her complaining of stomach pains. They convinced her to head back to Bluff so that she could see a doctor. The pilot sent a radio message to air traffic control about a sick tramper. An ambulance and police were waiting and she was whisked off to hospital, where she soon recovered. When the police examined her passport they saw she was an overstayer, and she was deported. Sadly Keiko’s Stewart Island adventure was over. Her stay in NZ lasted little more than five months but she lived it to the full. . . . The day before the hardest day of the trip. This photo was taken from Cinerama Col looking across at East Ridge of Dixon. Crossing this ridge was the stay of our day over Pioneer Pass the next day with full packs and ski gear. This was undoubtedly the most technically challenging day of the trip, and in reality it did not disappoint. It involved me freaking out, abseiling as the sun melted the face into us, hiding from potential overhead hazard on the edge of a glacier, an wet slide avalanche across our path and suboptimal tools on blue Ice. Needless to say I cried when we reached the pass on Sunset. Just to get to this point I'd had to go solo longer and in bigger terrain than I'd ever been before, run the gauntlet of avalanche danger Vs hypothermia and turn around because of avalanche danger. But after taking a few days out at Haast Pass I was pleased to resume my adventure and didn't look back again. It was somewhere around when and where this photo was taken that my amazing friend and mountain guide @sooji_hopes and I decided that the theme song of the trip was @groovearmada By The River. Part of my reason and drive to just make it to Haast Pass before throwing in the towel was that Dad was coming to join us for Gillespie Pass and I didn't want to let him down. It wasn't easy even after Lochnagar. Went we down the waterfall face at Rabbit Pass, which actually turned out to be fine, but after finding myself a little freaked going up the rock at the top of the Matukituki side of Rabbit Pass I was very anxious about it initially. I was stoked when I saw @dick_dalek arrived at Kerin Forks Hut and even more so when we made it up the snowy side of Gillespie Pass (a few years ago he told me he was done with snow, ice axes and crampons). Day Seven: I awarded for my resolve and suffering with this amazing and incredible view at Lochnagar. A place I'd long wanted to go. However, getting there was not so easy. We headed for the first real mountains a little too early in the season. Heinous glide cracks await on route, threatening to drop us in their unpredictable way without notice over the cliffs of Pine Creek. We try the ridge and Maz execute a series of moves that right now neither my mind nor body can follow. Nor can I retreat. I stand there a while contemplating the irony of needing to be rescued from this situation so soon after yesterday's thoughts. As I stand, I stare down back to the glide cracks and think maybe just maybe I can get back down to the snows below. Gradually carefully, crumblingly I climb down. Grateful for a diminutive alpine plant that holds firm when both feet fail at once. Strangely this near fall doesn't scare me the way I was scared it would, although courage fails at the final step and I have to wait for Maz to show me the way down. The risk we are taking on the snow eases with each step and by the time we arrive at Lochnagar I'm happy. I know now that maybe I can do this, although this confidence will waiver daily for the remainder of the three months. Day Six: Lowest point of the trip and not because of this Teapot, which I thought was actually rather glorious in the Cattle Flat Rock Biv in the Dart. But rather because mentally I had stacked all 60,000m of the mountains ahead one of top of each other in my mind and I couldn't possibly see how I was going to do it. The mountains were making me crazy and the thought of our route over the tops to Lochnagar was downright terrifying. I went for a swim in the creek and I received this message from @_m_whittaker on my inreach. 'Whatever happens Penzy - you are important. You are enough. You deserve to look after yourself.' With that I was able to gather just enough mental fortitude to resolve to at least make it to Haast Pass and then see. Mentally breaking the trip down into smaller sections helped alot. April 6th is international 406 Day. It is named after the frequency of the beacon signal, which has helped save the lives of countless people, all over the world. Beacons are a lifeline if you get into a life-threatening situation. They take the ‘search’ out of ‘search and rescue’ by showing rescuers where you are. People are found much faster when they have used a beacon. Nearly all land rescues involving a beacon are completed in less than 6 hours, compared to 16 hours without a beacon. You can hire beacons from many places, including 11 DOC Visitor Centres.
Location: Fiordland, New Zealand This was shot on a lonely mountain ridge, somewhere deep in Fiordland, on the south-western tip of New Zealand's South Island. Fiordland's terrain is rough and rugged and many areas are only accessible by helicopter. Even getting myself into this little valley was quite the adventure (hint: the route back up leads up the little cliff on the right). Due to it's inaccessibility, Fiordland never had a permanent population, and a lot of the nature is pristine and untouched.
