The @fiordlandtrails Trustโs plans to complete the Lake2Lake Trail have been given a boost, thanks to the Les Hutchins Conservation Foundation. The Lake2Lake Trail runs from Te Anau to Manapouri; the majority of the 28km being off-road. However, to complete the full trail, currently users must travel on the State Highway for 4km. โ The Fiordland Trails Trust has put forward plans to complete the trail, creating an off-road section between Supply Bay Road and Balloon Loop. Before the plans to connect the trail can move forward, an ecological assessment is required to outline any ecological impact of the proposed new section of track. โ The Les Hutchins Conservation Foundation, a foundation set up to support both nature-based education and conservation, has supported with a grant towards the ecological assessment. โ The Lake2Lake Trail, in its current form, attracts tens of thousands of bikers, runners, walkers and other trail users annually. The Fiordland Trails Trust is confident that completing the trail will only add to that, and support positive environmental, social, and economic impacts, improving safety and an enhanced user experience of moving users away from the road for the Fiordland area. #fiordland #conservation #lake2lake

After 8 1/2 months down in Milford, the adventure is over. I made the most incredible memories and had moments I will remember for the rest of my life. Marian Corner, or Marian Camp, is at the start of Hollyford Road at the head of the Hollyford Valley. A large parking area is beside the picturesque Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kฤ Tuka. An explanatory board describes the road-work camp that was established there in the 1930s to support the construction of the Milford Sound Highway and Hollyford Road, and a plaque memorialises the heroic actions of Davey Gunn in 1936. โ โ Davey Gunn was born into a farming family in Waimate, Canterbury. In 1926, he acquired private land from the original settlers, the McKenzie family. In 1929, he added four leases with 25,000 acres and set himself up at Deadmanโs Hut by the Hollyford River. He developed and maintained many of the tracks in the region. In 1936, he became famous when he saw a small plane crash in Big Bay on the West Coast. He aided the injured passengers and covered the 90 km journey to Marian Camp in just 21 hours. โ โ Shortly after this, he started providing tours through the Hollyford for tourists, which he attached to his mustering activities. This subsequently became guided tours on the Hollyford track to Martins Bay. On his death, his son Murray continued guided tours and converted a work camp into Gunns Camp.โ โ Marian Camp and nearby Mount Marian, Lake Marian, Lake Marian Track and Marian Creek were named after Marian Little. Milford Sound Storm This cruise was truly memorable. Despite the gale-force winds, rain, and waves splashing in my face, I managed to snap a few photos while holding onto my camera tightly. I honestly thought my camera was toast shortly before this image was taken. As I ducked behind the safety of the boat, I got engulfed by a wave. I love being in Milford during this type of weather because the waterfalls multiply and seem to come to life. #fiordland #milfordsound #sonyalpha

Hollyford Road is a 16 km metalled road along the Hollyford Valley in Fiordland. It starts at Marian Corner, where the Milford Sound Highway (State Highway 94) reaches the Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kฤ Tuka after dropping down from The Divide. The drive only takes 45 minutes, less than halfway along the valley, and terminates at the start of the Hollywood Track. โ โ Before Europeans arrived, the valley was part of a Mฤori trail network that provided access to West Coast pounamu and other resources. The idea of a road was first suggested around the 1870s to connect Hollyford with Haast and Te Anau. Te Anau to Milford was ultimately built in the 1930s, with the extension into the Hollyford Valley.โ โ For a day trip, start with a stop at the car park at Marian Corner, once a road-building work camp set up in the 1930s to support the construction of the Milford Sound Highway. It is a short drive to the large parking area at the start of the Lake Marian Track. Allow up to 4 hours to walk up to the lake and back or 20 minutes to walk to a spectacular series of waterfalls on Marian Creek.โ โ Continue along the road to Gunns Camp. This surviving road camp was used for many years as a Holiday Park, small shop, and museum. It was closed after an enormous storm in 2020, but you can wander around. Look out for the historic explosives safe and photo wall. โ โ Most of the road is shrouded in dense forest, but there are a couple of places where you can stop to take in the raging rapids of the Hollyford River. One is by the swingbridge at the start of the Moraine Creek Track, which heads west, deep into the Darran Mountains.โ โ A little further on is the car park for the short walk to the 275-metre-high Humboldt Falls and the start of the multi-day Hollyford Track to Martins Bay on the West Coast.
