Cape Wrath Trail 2024 - Day 7. Achnashellach to Kinlochewe. We lucked out last night at a hidden campsite we found a reference to on a forum, we rocked up and the v friendly owner let us sleep in a cabin - luxury with lights, chairs, water, toilet, plugs and even a heater! 🥾Distance Walked - 17km ⛰️Total ascent - 530m 🌅Start - 8am 🌘End - 3pm early finish 🙃 🌄Terrain - All easy going today, mostly tracks. 🦅Wildlife - Caledonian Pine Forest, we walked through some areas that had received funding to fence out Deer and protect the Pine Forest. It was great to see what the landscape should be like. So diverse. What was good? - Easy nav, I could switch my brain off and just enjoy the movement and views. Picking up our resupply parcels, visiting a shop and getting pizza 🍕 so many treats! Cooking dinner in a hut on the train platform and flagging down the train - first time I've ever stopped a train at a request stop 😄 What was hard? - Navigating 6km across a featureless bog in hail storms, with no path = a challenge. PCT day 7 - 12 Scissors Crossings to Idyllwild - mile 77,3 to 175,4 Another 100 miles on the PCT. The first week living in the White Mountains has been epic. Work from home, then pack the car up to go play in the woods. There is beauty in every corner, and the people are so friendly. Arizona Trail (AZT): DAY 52••••• 04.21.24 (mile 794.6) [motel] ¡FIN! Epic - dynamic - cold - welcoming I started the Arizona National Scenic Trail with 4 friends & 800 miles to go, from the AZ/Mexican border to the AZ/UT border. I ended with none of those friends but found new ones. Along the way my initial trail family split off, for a variety of reasons (don’t worry all have amazing adventures ahead of them). Along the way, trail angels showed up time & time again; whether setting out water caches or opening up their homes (thanks again so very much Gila Mamma & Scott) we were met with nothing but kindness & generosity. After saguaros forests🌵, snow-covered❄️ volcanoes, waist-deep river💦 crossings, & a canyon so grand it couldn’t be named anything else, I waked my 800 miles through the state of Arizona. Two new friends just ahead of me (Prime & Trucker had already reached the terminus monument (they’re faster than me (frankly EVERYONE is faster than me)), & a few others we’d met just a few days before, I turned a corner and spotted the end. It had been a few months since I’d been on a long trail and I’d missed it, but I’d also been missing my partner Chance, & now I could start making my way back to her. Now I’ll spend a good amount of time processing this journey & some lessons that I’d learned. SOOOOOOOOOON👹👹👹👹👹 Ahhhhhhhh! Here I am, starting another long trail with an injury teehee. This time it’s a small fracture in my shoulder that I’ve been letting heal, pushing back my start date. This gear layout is lighter than my last set up — less than 12 pounds. I’m so grateful to my cousin (@meleeisland) and his family for letting John and I crash at his house while I heal. And to John who has been waiting with me and helping me figure out how to do life single-handedly. I left Nitsy’s retreat feeling amazing ready to push big miles. 2nd day into the push to big bear the wash hit. It was 15 miles of hell and the crew had to bail out a ravine just to get back to solid ground. By the time I escaped the wash I was wrecked. Temperatures dropped to freezing at mission springs that night and my filter froze solid. It was a very brutal section for me but hopefully things turn around. Riding in a train car across the vast, beautiful, landscape of this nation that I love dearly, I have had plenty of time to reflect. I let go of so much this year. I feel fundamentally changed. Calmer, more decisive, more likely to tell you where to stick it if you step on me, in the nicest way possible of course. I rarely get angry anymore. I've worked so hard to prepare myself for this hike. I never turned down a job and sacrificed so much to be here. I put in the work at the gym. I tried to train as much as possible. I feel I've done everything I can and what happens now is just the way the cookie crumbles. My nerves are on fire. I know what I'm taking on but I also know of the rich rewards that await on this trail. I think I'm just excited, really. Tomorrow I'll be at Crazy Cook, looking out across a bleak desert landscape with all those miles ahead. My love for this I feel will never die. Can’t believe it’s already been 2 months of #pct2024 and #thruhiking season. I am thankful for all the licenses I acquired while doing travel therapy (and some more since starting Blaze) as I’ve been able to connect with hikers on 5 of the main scenic trails already this season. I couldn’t ask for a more motivated, and gracious community of people to dedicate my services to. It’s truly incredible the injuries people can overcome and continue walking 20+ miles a day. I also cannot wait to nerd out on injury trends I’m seeing from different trails, specific terrain and days on trail. Meet Lone Wolf, the first of my friends to triple crown 👑 👑 👑! For all of the muggles, Triple Crowning means you have thruhiked the AT, PCT, and the CDT. All of those trails are 2,000+ miles and can take 4-6 months. It’s a huge feat and to see a femme representing is inspiring, showing the world women are amazing creatures! I first met Lone Wolf in a church basement, soaking my toes, on Fourth of July weekend in Duncannon, Pa. I then encountered her multiple times further along in the Northern states and even saw her on the day she Triple 👑 👑 👑. Lone Wolf taught me space. We each laid in our bunks at Old Colony Ski Club while having a long discussion about our lives outside of trail. She one badass boss out in the working world, having worked for the peace core in third world countries, now working for ivy league colleges. Through all that she has kept making space for things she loves, for the dreams she has. On trail you begin to wonder how do you fit this lifestyle into “real life”. For someone like me, I wanted to keep doing these long hikes and make them a part of my off trail life because to me it’s all real life. Lone Wolf showed me i don’t have to give up on my dreams, I just need to make space for them. The second thing Lone Wolf taught me was that no matter where I go, I’ll never stop being a RN. Maybe I should look into Trail Triage Nursing😉. Thank you Lone Wolf for all that you taught. 🍃 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹• 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟮 𝑹𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒏… When there’s no rain in the forecast for days but you hear rain falling on your tent throughout the night. 🤦♀️ Alas, the forecast doesn’t take into account that you’ll be spending the night high above the valley between 4,500 and 4,600 feet above sea level. So essentially, you are sleeping and hiking IN the clouds. Now I was never very good at science, but apparently, clouds contain vapor, which is wet. And that vapor contains water droplets, which dripped not only on our tent throughout the night, but also on our bodies and backpacks for the better half of Saturday. It was a rain jacket and glove kind of day— raw, wet and cold. We met another section hiker this morning who warned us of an upcoming section of trail where there was was heavy bear activity for 16 miles, specifically at Standing Ondian Shelter. We checked our Far Out app, and sure enough, we read accounts from numerous backpackers who had lost all their food from bears who climbed the trees to get to their food bags, even those who used the PCT hang method. Numerous signs on trees along the trail confirmed the information. 👉 So in an attempt to get as far as we could through the heavy bear area, we picked up our pace today, and made it over 13 miles to the tentsite in just under eight hours. Now if you’re proficient in math, you realize that 13 miles is 3 miles shy of where the bears AREN’T. And unfortunately, there is not a single decent tree in this area for a proper bear hang. We have no choice but to keep our food bags in our tent by our feet tonight.
