Welcome to Black History month! Once again I’m sharing knowledge all this month. Each day a person you should know and some racism you should be aware of. How many of these people you do know and how much of this racism you weren’t aware of will give you a good indication of how deeply entrenched racism is and how conscious of it you are. And that’s one to grow on. #blackhistorymonth #jpsonetogrowon #blackhistorytoknow #racismtobeawareof #whitesupremacy #whitesupremacyisterrorism #knightsofthewhitecamelia #williammonroetrotter #monroetrotter #naacp #niagaramovement

#OnThisDay in 1868, #WEBDuBois was born. Du Bois was a #civilrights activist, sociologist, historian, and writer. He was a leader of the #NiagaraMovement, an organization that laid the foundation for the formation of the #NAACP. Du Bois was a prolific author and his collection of essays, The Souls of Black Folk, is a seminal work in #AfricanAmerican literature. His 1935 work, #Black Reconstruction in America, challenged the prevailing idea that Blacks were responsible for the failures of the Reconstruction Era. Additionally, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was passed a year after his death, embodied many of the reforms for which Du Bois had campaigned. “No one did more to place the American Negro in the world as a full-voiced speaking subject than did W.E.B. Du Bois,” said Henry Louis Gates, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities and director of the Du Bois Institute at Harvard. #blackhistorymonth #allyearlong

W. E. B. Du Bois was a sociolgist, historian, and civil rights activist. While he grew up in a tolerant and integrated community, he knew there was work to be done to achieve equality. He was the first African-American to earn a Doctorate - from Harvard, no less! He rose to prominence as a leader of the Niagara Movement, a group of activists who sought full equal rights. He was also a founder of the #NAACP. He was a prolific author whose work frequently protested lynching, Jim Crow laws, and discrimination in education and employment. Most notably, his activism included people of color everywhere, especially Africans and Asians.    #BlackHistoryMonth #WEBDuBois #NiagaraMovement #BlackExcellence #TheShadeTree #TheShadeTreeLasVegas #TheShadeTreeLV #CivilRights #Sociology #AtlantaCompromise #activism

¿Has escuchado del Movimiento Niágara? . . . . . #movimientoniagara #niagara #niagaramovement #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #historias #historia #niagaraaventuras

In 1905, Atlanta University professor W.E.B. Du Bois met with other Black intellectuals in Buffalo, NY. Their goal: to form an organization to call for civil rights for African Americans. - Although originally meeting in Buffalo, Du Bois and the group looked for a quieter spot to have more open conferences. They decided to cross the river to Fort Erie, Canada. From their hotel, this group of 29 intellectuals started to formulate their goals for equal rights in the eyes of both the law and the public. Within a year, the group grew to over 170 members across 34 states, unified under an organization named after the area where those original 29 first laid out their Declaration of Principles. - The Niagara Movement began to gain traction as Du Bois and other members began to lobby against segregation. While the group peaked at 800 members in 1907, calls for an integrated civil rights organization led many of its members, including Du Bois, to form a new organization in 1909: The NAACP - - - #niagarafalls #blackhistorymonth #webdubois #naacp #niagaramovement

On September 17, 1920, Maria Louise Baldwin lined up to sign her name to the Boston Register of Women Voters, just weeks after the ratification of the 19th Amendment granted many women the right to vote in the US. Baldwin was one of many Black women living in Boston who claimed this new right. Baldwin, then 63, had been working her whole life for African American and women’s rights. The registration clerk wrote her occupation as “teacher” at the Agassiz School in her voter entry - but this doesn’t tell the whole story! Baldwin was actually the headmistress of this largely white school in Cambridge, breaking barriers in New England. She also helped found the Women’s Era Club, held classes for Black Harvard students (including W.E.B. DuBois), was an early member of the Niagara Movement and the NAACP, and served as president of the League of Women for Community Service. Baldwin’s legacy includes the renaming of the Agassiz School as the Maria L. Baldwin School in her honor. Her voter registration entry is one part of her remarkable story! - Erin Wiebe “Bust portrait of educator and civic leader, Maria ‘Molly' Baldwin,” about 1885, Library of Congress #MaryElizaProject #19thAmendment #BlackHistoryMonth #WomensHistory #BlackHistory #BostonHistory #BlackSuffragists #CambridgeMA #CambridgeMAHistory #WomensEraClub #NiagaraMovement #NAACP

This probably sounds odd if you’ve never been, but I’d always wanted to visit Harpers Ferry. Tucked into the notch where West Virginia meets Maryland and Virginia, at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, this tiny town is a mix of fascinating history, natural beauty and quirk. All my favorite things. It’s known especially for abolitionist John Brown’s failed but consequential 1859 attempt to start a slave insurrection, which drew so much national attention that a homegrown war began to seem inevitable. When the Civil War did start less than two years later, Harpers Ferry, then part of Virginia, was in the thick of it. In 1863, halfway through the war, the western region of Virginia split into its own state, becoming part of the Union and taking Harpers Ferry with it. 📷 1: Harpers Ferry is now both a national historical park and a bustling town. (Our favorite local stop: @bolivarbread, which had a focaccia with vegan kielbasa, sauerkraut and mustard. What?) It’s also home to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters, the “psychological midpoint” of the AT, which traverses these steps. 📷 2: Called “John Brown’s Fort,” this building was actually a fire-engine house for the U.S. armory and arsenal here — the reason Brown chose Harpers Ferry in the first place. It’s where Brown barricaded himself before being captured, tried, and sentenced to death for treason and trying to incite a slave rebellion. 📷 3: Lockwood House, the original site of what became Storer College, which opened in 1867 to educate formerly enslaved men and women. Storer in 1906 hosted an important meeting of the Niagara Movement, the precursor of the NAACP. It closed in 1955, and today the Storer campus houses National Park Service training and interpretive-design centers. 📷 4 & 5: The Maryland Heights Trail crosses this footbridge, which runs parallel to a railroad bridge, and climbs to the rocks above. There you’re rewarded with a view of Harpers Ferry framed by three states.

The Niagara Movement (NM) was a black civil rights organization founded in 1905 by a group of activists—many of whom were among the vanguard of African-American lawyers in the United States—led by W. E. B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter. It was named for the "mighty current" of change the group wanted to effect and took Niagara Falls as its symbol. The group did not meet in Niagara Falls, New York, but planned its first conference for nearby Buffalo (at the last minute, to avoid disruptions, moved across the Niagara River to Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada). #webDubois #blackhistory #niagaramovement

Storer College Niagara Movement Harpers Ferry, West Virginia When you visit, you will have the chance to learn more about civil rights activism in the Harpers Ferry area with the Storer College and Niagara Movement Exhibit! Storer College was established to educate newly freed slaves and give them skills to join the workforce. The Niagara Movement was started by prominent civil rights activist W.E.B. DuBois with the mission of establishing racial equality. The Niagara Movement was from 1905 to 1910 and called for full political, civil, and social rights for African Americans. This stance stood in notable contrast to the accommodation philosophy proposed by Booker T. Washington in the Atlanta Compromise of 1895. Storer College was a historically black college in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, that operated from 1867 to 1955. A national icon for Black Americans, in the town where the 'end of American slavery began', as Frederick Douglass famously put it. The first purposes of the school turned college were to teach reading, writing, and other marketable skills. These three things were crucial for the development of freed slaves seeking the necessary training and skills needed in the post-slave South. The more you know... The Niagara Movement which was the precursor to the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded on July 11, 1905 at Niagara Falls near Fort Erie, Ontario. The meeting which was organized by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter brought together a group of civil rights activists often referred to as anti-Bookerites because of their opposition to some of the more perceived passive approaches to dealing with discrimination advocated by Booker T. Washington. The men who met at this meeting were supportive of a more aggressive method of ending discrimination in America. They demanded among many things the equitable treatment of all American citizens and all of the rights guaranteed in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution. • • • • • #blackawareness #blackculture #blacklegacy #younggiftedandblack #civilrights #powertothepeople #socialinjustice #DelrayBeach #Delray #blackamericatoday #bhm #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryeveryday #blackhistoryfacts #blackhistoryiseveryday #NiagaraMovement #NAACP #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryToday #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory #africanamericanhistory #africanhistory #blackandproud

2023 WPAMC Southern Trip Day 8-We were greeted by a beautiful morning in Harper’s Ferry, WV where we met Nick Powers again to walk the Harper Cemetery and the campus of Storer College, the noted historically Black college that ran from 1867 to 1955, when state funding was pulled. High on the hill above the main interpreted section of Harper’s Ferry, it is an important, but underappreciated site. After time to explore the lower town we headed to our last site, continuing the theme of industrial history, community, education and labor at the Catoctin Furnace Historic site and Ironmonger’s Museum. Mainly a producer of pig iron and ammunition from the 1770s but with some decorative firebacks, stoves, andirons and other products. We discussed the effects of shifting from an primarily enslaved labor force to one that was primarily free and white in the mid 1800s (pre-Civil War) and the responsibility of preserving over 100 intact graves of these individuals. While the furnaces are largely gone, the footprint of the town remains largely the same since the 19th century. This small but mighty organization is doing excellent research and interpretation. Stories of people, objects, architecture, landscape, environment, craft, industry, preservation, and memory come together here in fascinating ways. Well worth a visit, and proof that good things can happen when people make inclusive interpretation and good research a priority. Weary and with thoughts and questions formed throughout the trip swirling in our heads, we arrived back at Winterthur. A huge thank you to the wonderful students for being amazing travel companions and to my ever wonderful colleague, and the trip’s designer and main leader, Jackie Killian… to say it is a pleasure to travel and work with you is the understatement of the year. @jgkofalltrades @materialculturewinterthur @winterthurmuse @harpersferrynps @catoctinfurnace #storercollege #niagaramovement #ohshenandoah #potomac #johnbrownsbody #ironironeverywhere #blasted #firedup #isabellethefurnace #catoctinafricanamericancemetery #sacredspace #homewardbound

As discussed on Tuesday’s Post, the remarkable legacy of the Niagara Movement cannot be understated. - With around 170 members spread across 34 states in 1906, the movement gained considerable traction. By 1907, their numbers surged dramatically, with a monumental gathering in Boston attracting an astounding attendance of 800 members! - Although the Niagara Movement eventually dissipated, its impact lived on, serving as a catalyst for an even more influential organization—the NAACP. - Established in 1909 in New York City, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) united visionaries like W.E.B Du Bois from the Niagara Movement, alongside prominent figures of both black and white communities, striving to eradicate discrimination and create equal opportunities for African Americans. - The NAACP accomplished numerous significant milestones, including the successful passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. These pivotal achievements paved the way for enhanced lives and increased equality for African Americans. . . . #niagarafalls #blackhistory #travel #historymatters #travel #history #niagara #niagaramovement

Have you heard of the Niagara Movement? - Back in 1905, a remarkable assembly of black intellectuals formed this influential group. Led by W.E.B Du Bois, their primary objective was to advocate for civil and political rights for African Americans. - It's difficult to grasp the extent of racial discrimination they faced during that time, not long after the abolition of slavery. - The Niagara Movement left an indelible mark with their resounding call for equal economic and educational opportunities. They firmly believed in granting black men and women the right to vote and staunchly opposed racial discrimination and segregation. - Choosing the name "Niagara Movement" was symbolic of their desire to create a powerful surge of change, akin to the mighty current of Niagara Falls. . . . #niagarafalls #historymatters #niagarafallsusa #history #canada #buffalo #niagaramovement #history #travel #blackhistory

“Joe, come look at the Falls!” Closed out 2022 in Canada at Niagara Falls!! Standing in the place where Harriet Tubman led so many to freedom—and later visiting the historic site of the first meeting of the Niagara Movement—was a true blessing and reminder of my purpose. ❤️ “The Negro race in America stolen, ravished and degraded, struggling up through difficulties and oppression, needs sympathy and receives criticism; needs help and is given hindrance, needs protection and is given mob-violence, needs justice and is given charity, needs leadership and is given cowardice and apology, needs bread and is given a stone. This nation will never stand justified before God until these things are changed.” - From The Niagara Movement declaration of principles #HappyKwanzaa #HarrietTubman #NiagaraFalls #NiagaraMovement #BlackFreedomMovement

#BookerTWashington and #WEBDuBois had overlapping concerns about education but came from different backgrounds with different ideas of how to solve the struggle for education and advancement. Washington was born in bondage, and DuBois was born of the cultured black elite. Washington believed strongly in education but encouraged many to “cast down your bucket where you are.” He felt there was as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem. He encouraged people to work in agriculture, commerce, mechanics, professional venues, and business. Washington was quoted as saying, “it is important and right that all privileges of the law be ours, but it vastly more important that we be prepared for the exercise of these privileges.” He supported education greatly, as noted in Up from Slavery and the Negro in Business. DuBois was the founder of the #NiagaraMovement and the #NAACP. DuBois was the first black to get a Ph.D. from #Harvard, which opened doors for others to follow. DuBois continued his emphasis on academic education and called it “the talented tenth.” Thus, acknowledging that this was not what most needed at the time. Although he admitted that vocational education was required, DuBois continued to promote a different type of education. Have you ever heard of Albion Tourgee (1838- 1905)? He was a #UnionArmy soldier, later, an NC state superior court judge who battled the #KuKluxKlan and was frustrated with the failures of Reconstruction. In addition, Albion was the lead counsel for #HomerPlessy in the #PlessyvFerguson Case. Unfortunately, he failed to convince the Supreme Court in their 7-to-1 decision to strike down the segregation law of separate but equal. However, Albion did influence dissenting Justice Harlan's remarks that “separate but equal” was inherently unconstitutional and a violation of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. After Tourgee died in 1905, the #NiagaraMovement (the precursor to the #NAACP) voted to sponsor a memorial to honor three friends that upheld equal rights and freedom for all: #WilliamLloydGarrison, #FrederickDouglass, and #AlbionTourgee. Instead of posting awkward photos of our rangers in middle school on Back to School Picture Day (you're welcome, rangers), we'd like to feature our awesome summer intern Cassie. Cassie is a student at Benedict College, a South Carolina HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). We think she's got a great back to school photo in historic Lower Town! Check out her write-up of Storer College's role in the Niagara Movement's 1906 meeting: The legacy and controversy of John Brown’s ill-fated 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry’s Armory is inescapable. Since his bloody attempt to help bring an end to slavery, millions have journeyed to the Armory Fire Engine House, called his Fort, to wrestle with his actions. In 1906, the Niagara Movement, an avant-garde civil rights organization that demanded equality for African Americans, decided to hold its second meeting in Harpers Ferry because of John Brown’s legacy. The town itself also seemed like an ideal location: Storer College had large dorms, mostly empty in the summertime, to accommodate a convention. On August 17, the convention in the Ferry commemorated John Brown Day. Over 100 Niagarite pilgrims visited John Brown's Fort on nearby Murphy Farm. They marched barefoot around it, treating it as hallowed ground, as they sang the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “John Brown’s Body Lies Amouldering in the Grave.” Reverend C. Ransom gave a speech that day, declaring, “John Brown had not died in vain: the rifle shot at Harpers Ferry received answer from the cannon fired upon Fort Sumter." His address was met with thunderous applause. As an HBCU student, I spent my summer soaking in the rich history of Storer College and its role in the the civil rights movement's early days. It has been my privilege to help keep the memory of this place alive. NPS photos/Kerwin-Nisbet and Day. Park intern Cassie on the Storer College campus and in living history garb. “Progress: The members of the conference, known as the Niagara Movement, assembled in annual meeting at Buffalo, July 11th, 12th and 13th, 1905, congratulate the Negro-Americans on certain undoubted evidences of progress in the last decade, particularly the increase of intelligence, the buying of property, the checking of crime, the uplift in home life, the advance in literature and art, and the demonstration of constructive and executive ability in the conduct of great religious, economic and educational institutions.” ~Niagara Movement, 1905 #OnThisDay, we continue highlighting the key principles the Niagara Movement with a focus on Progress. W. E. B. Du Bois had recently addressed the issue of showing African American progress in the "The Exhibit of American Negroes" for the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. According to researcher Alex Q. Arbuckle, "Du Bois selected his photographs not as an objective cross-section of black Americans, but as a rebuttal to prevailing representations of black people as inherently inferior or primitive....one of Calloway’s and Du Bois’ objectives with the hastily assembled exhibit was to convince an elite audience of the worth and accomplishments of black Americans, even if that meant engaging in respectability politics." Follow us all week as we commemorate the 116th anniversary of the Niagara Movement meeting at Harpers Ferry, which took place over five days in August 1906. The gathering of this civil rights organization and precursor to the NAACP is on of the park's significant stories and illustrates the movement from the battles of the Civil War to the struggles of the civil rights movement. “Protest: We refuse to allow the impression to remain that the Negro-American assents to inferiority, is submissive under oppression and apologetic before insults. Through helplessness we may submit, but the voice of protest of ten million Americans must never cease to assail the ears of their fellows, so long as America is unjust.” ~Niagara Movement, 1905 #OnThisDay, we continue highlighting the key principles the Niagara Movement with a focus on Protest. The Movement largely evolved into the NAACP, which took up the mantle of protest action in the civil rights battles of the mid-20th century.
