Now in store : @willowsmith ‘s debut novel ‘Black Shield Maiden’ (co-written by Jess Hendel)⚔️🛡️ A powerful and groundbreaking historical saga about an African warrior in the world of the Vikings. Lore, legend, and history tell us of the Vikings: warrior kings on epic journeys of conquest and plunder. But the stories we know are not the only stories to tell. There is another story, one that has been lost to the mists of time: the saga of the dark queen. #willowsmith #willow #blackliterature #

Roger Robinson – The Butterfly Hotel Roger Robinson is a British-Trinidadian spoken-word artist and poet who won the T.S. Eliot Prize in 2019 and lives between London and Trinidad. I read his latest poetry collection „A Portable Paradise“ some time ago and really loved it. This collection was published in 2013 and deals with the topics of exile and the places we call home. It’s divided into three sections and each section contains a couple of poems about butterflies. Especially the monarch butterfly that travels thousands of miles from the Rocky Mountains back to its birthplace in Mexico is used as a symbol for the author’s own travels between two worlds. The first part of the collection deals with life in Brixton, its joys and dark sides. Robinson is a great observer with a keen eye for detail, his poems have a rhythm to them that would definitely work well on a stage. The second section of the book deals with the immigrant experience, with life as a newly arrived Caribbean in London, but also with his Irish great-grandfather who took the journey in the other direction and settled in Trinidad. It also deals with the dynamics of inequality and oppression when he writes about the unnamed portrayed woman in a painting who worked as a servant for the painter. In this part, butterflies are also used as symbols of transformation. Finally, in the third part Robinson writes about Trinidad, some poems are nostalgic memories of childhood, others deal with the impact of colonialism and present-day violence. I read this book for the April prompt (nature themed) for the #ReadWhatYouOwnInCommunity challenge organised by @bookish.cori and @sitting.wishing.reading and I’m really glad I picked it! I rarely read poetry, but whenever I do I think that I should change that. Have you read anything by Roger Robinson yet? What are your favourite poets? I’d love to hear some recommendations! #rogerrobinson #thebutterflyhotel #bookstagram #readcaribbean #blackliterature #20booksbyblackfolx #poetry #igreads #books #bücher #reading #readersofinstagram #lesen #bücherliebe #ilovereading #rwyoic #butterfly

I hope you can read the post, but it is always an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as such outstanding and well-known authors. I am humbled. If you're on FB, check out the Black Girl Book Club. As background, Ms. Solander once found herself reading mostly books and novels by female authors, so she decided to dedicate an entire month to reading works by AA male authors. Allow me to try to expand on her effort and recommend that we all dedicate some time to reading works of the other gender, another race, culture, orientation, etc. In other words, stories by anyone who may see things through a different set of lenses. You'll be better off for it, believe me. #bookstagram #bookreader #blackliterature #blackauthors #bipocauthor #africanamericanauthor #fantasy #fantasyauthor #fantasyreader #africanamericanfantasy #sciencefiction #blacksciencefiction #sciencefictionauthor #sciencefictionreader #scifi #scifireader #scifiauthor #africanamericansciencefiction #fiction #fictionbooks #fictionreader #kindlereader #blackfiction #africanamericanfiction #kindleunlimited #africanamericanfictionauthor #artificialintelligence #android #femaleprotagonist #womanprotagonist

🧡🎵 🄱🄾🄾🄺 🅁🄴🅅🄸🄴🅆 🎵💜 Undiplomatic: How My Attitude Created the Best Kind of Trouble by Deesha Dyer Pub Date: 4.23.24 This book is a MUST READ‼️ Without credentials or connections, community college student and advocate Deesha Dyer navigated her imposter syndrome, landing one of the most exclusive positions in the White House. Loved reading about Deesha’s experience and journey to the White House. How often is a regular day person without a political background given the opportunity to intern at the White House? Not many but sus applied, got the role, turned it into a permanent position, and showed everyone why she deserved to be the Social secretary‼️ She spoke on so many themes throughout the book from chronic imposter syndrome, finding her place in the world, overcoming doubt, her educational/ career background, abortion, relationships, the effects music has on our culture, and of course what lead up to her applying for the internship and working at the White House. This book and her personal story proves nothing is out of reach for a dreamer. Had she allowed doubt and the assumptions of others to get in the way of her potential she wouldn’t be where she is today. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Not only was her story inspiring but it was such a joy hearing from someone that I could relate to. There were even a few moments I laughed out loud. Imagine meeting Barack Obama for the first time and you blow it. Her attempt to make a good impression resulted in her suggesting she could jump off the plane in midair like girl what lmao. If you’re looking for another great memoir you found it and check out the custom playlist curated by the author on Spotify. In all the ways I had heard about Angela Davis, somehow I didn’t know she was jailed. This autobiography showed snippets of Angela’s life that woke up her social consciousness. Something so interesting to me was her refusal to indulge in self-pity while in the carceral system or sink into thinking of just herself. Her appreciation of the global efforts to free her, but also being committed to condemning a carceral system that silences people who did not have the “political clout” she did.

This book nearly conquered me, but I broke through and actually quite love what Teju Cole does here. Thank goodness. TREMOR hands us a loose patchwork of memories and imaginations from a West African art professor’s life, marriage, and world travels. It’s superbly written and packed with “hell yea” missives on race, art, war, and imperialism, but really makes us work for Cole’s through-line. I had my theories. They wobbled, then corrected. I questioned my intelligence, pressed on, and ultimately feel satisfied. It was worth the wobbling. I know this novel’s a bit esoteric, but I approached TREMOR this way: How might a quite cerebral, academic person process his own mortality, particularly when his most beloved faculties are challenged? And how might we as readers interpret his unspoken questions through the memories he’s curated on the page? Tunde (the artist) imagines: “In a hundred years I will not only be dead but I will also be meaningfully gone, surviving only as rumor, only as trace. And that oblivion comes through suffering, a terrible path to a terrible fate.” It can all read as nihilistic, but in context it actually becomes quite liberating. There’s that idea of sonder - that appreciation of the vastness and complexity of every other person’s life - and a unity and warmth in knowing we all share similar fates (on a grand scale) despite our difference. Apropos or not, I loved this scene from Tunde’s wife toward the end: “Bowls are passed around with heaps of white rice on which the gumbo is served and it’s as though people don’t realize how hungry they are until they began to eat. Drinks are expected at parties but real food isn’t. But we love to feed people. What a gift to get to do this in community. How great is what surrounds us, how insubstantial what preoccupies us. I make eye contact with my love, the one who keeps me from losing my head, the one I keep from losing his footing.” We’re in it alone, friends, but we’re in it together.

Alice Dunbar-Nelson published as a companion piece to her husband’s Poems of Cabin and Field in 1899. The volume helped establish her as a skillful portrayer of Creole culture. While not considered a major figure in the Harlem Renaissance for her own literary contributions, Dunbar Nelson influenced the work of other black writers not only by her own precise, incisive literary style but also through her numerous reviews of such writers as Langston Hughes. This was my first time reading her work and I really enjoyed her style of writing. Her character development is in its own league. / Jenny #percivaleverett #james #huckleberryfinn #marktwain #hanser #bookstagram #bookstagramgermany #blackliterature #whatiread #ebook #netgalleyde #buchtipp #literatur #bücherliebe #bookcontent

“How is it possible to be free when you don’t even know who you are?” You ever feel like a book was written just for you, right now, at this very moment? I felt like this one grabbed me off the shelf and not the reverse. Kaitlyn Greenidge’s “Libertie” is the story of a freeborn Black girl in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn as she becomes a woman. She navigates freedom, not only from bondage, but also to navigate the fullness of her own decisions as she comes into womanhood. It’s a coming of age story, a love story, a history lesson all wrapped into one. Libertie’s journey takes us from Reconstruction-era New York to an Ohio college to Haiti. I often think about what it means to be truly free. This book explores the complexity of that question in such a beautiful way. It balances the euphoria associated with freedom with the weight it actually carries. And to explore this through the lens of a Black women and girls is exactly what we need more of in literature, and in life.

❤️‍🔥🥀 вσσк яєνιєω 🥀❤️‍🔥 This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron Another buddy read for the win‼️ Ppl gotta stop sleeping on the YA novels sometimes they really be hitting. Inspired by stories of Greek gods and goddesses the author did not miss with this book. Bri was always curious about the origins of her powers. So, when she inherits her birth family’s mansion near Rhinebeck all her questions will soon be answered. I really enjoyed reading this one and can’t wait to read book 2 in the series. The way the author ended Poison Heart I was immediately ready to jump into book 2. Definitely a series that deserves to be on my shelf. It was the plot twist for me cause I did NOT see it coming at all. The whole group had assumptions and was iffy about a few characters. So, when everything popped off we were all a little surprised. The character development was great and diverse actually found them all to be very likeable. Whenever I read I always put a face with the characters. So, I couldn’t help but picture Bri’s parents Thandie and Angie as the two women from The Chi Nina and Dre. Their personalities really fit these characters for some reason. Loved Marie for Bri she seemed really solid and that damn Karter had us all fooled. Overall, the book was great loved the mythological aspects throughout. The writing was incredible and so descriptive which really brought it to life. Definitely a book I’d recommend the author also has a new book releasing in June “Sleep Like Death” that I can’t wait to read‼️ 🏷️ #BookReview #ThisPosionHeart #YAFantasy #WitchFantasy #KalynnBayron #BookRecs #ReadBlackBooks #blackbookstagram #bookish #bookfeature #bibliophile #bookstagram #blackreaders #readblacklit #blackliterature #diversespines #BlackPoets #20BooksByBlackWomen #readmorebooks #blackgirlsread #FYP #explorepage #bookreviewer #blackauthors #FantasyBooks
