Meet the moustached tamarin, a primate native to Brazil and Peru. While groups of moustached tamarins are highly territorial when they come in contact with one another, they are surprisingly willing to share territory with saddleback tamarins. Due to dietary differences, the two species do not compete for resources, allowing them to co-exist and increase the chances of survival for both groups - the more individuals a group has, the greater chance that someone will see or hear an approaching predator. The scientists were from the SETI Institute, which seeks to understand the origin of life in the universe. Its work has the glamour of science fiction but also involves rigorous research. I took this photo in the Atacama Desert's Salar de Pajonales, where we camped in tin shacks, remnants of an abandoned mine, near a lake. This ravenous trio is a group of young torresian crows, found in the wild across northern and western Australia, as well as Papua New Guinea, the Moluccas, and New Britain. Throughout its range, these crows are capable of occupying almost any habitat type so long as there is a permanent source of water present and tall trees nearby which are used for nesting. This species feeds mostly on grain and fruits, which can often lead to the bird being labeled as a pest species by farmers, as torresian crows are known to damage crops such as sweetcorn, peanuts, and wheat. Caribbean flamingos like this chick @indianapoliszoo initially hatch with white down feathers, and it will take several years (and many molts) before this hatchling sports its characteristic pink plumage. For the first few weeks of life, Mom and Dad are hands-on parents, but once a hatchling is able to walk and swim, it joins a group of its peers known as a creche; which can have as many as 300,000 members! Humboldt penguins like this juvenile @parcdesoiseaux call the shorelines of Peru and Chile home. We often think of penguins as cold-weather species, but during the hottest months of the year, this species regularly encounters triple-digit temperatures. To beat the heat, these penguins have bare patches of skin around their eyes and at the base of their bill that allow them to expel body heat and keep their temperature regulated. Exciting news out of India! A group of biologists recently uncovered a nesting site belonging to the critically endangered Cantor’s giant softshell turtle. This is the first time this species has been recorded breeding in the wild in India. Photo by @joelsartore | In the wild, gray gibbons call the rainforests on the island of Borneo home. They are exclusively arboreal, meaning they spend almost all of their time in the trees, trying to never let their feet touch the ground. While this might seem impossible, it is actually quite easy for gibbons thanks to their extra-long arms! This species uses those lanky forelimbs for brachiation, a form of movement in which primates swing from tree limb to tree limb using only their arms. Without forests full of tall trees in close proximity to one another, gibbons are unable to move within their home range, meaning they struggle to find the food and shelter they need to survive. Wispy feathers -much like human hair-don't support flight but they do help the bird blend in with the undergrowth of the New Zealand forests where it lives. We got an offer to photograph two private feather collections and those of the National History Museum in Berlin. Feathers are encounters with the irresistibly beautiful in nature. We wanted to present them as a sensual experience, as poetic masterpieces of evolution. For this project, we used the method of focus stacking, in which similar photos with different focal planes are blended to achieve a more profound depth of field. Gradually our engagement with nature and technology developed into a kind of meditation. “Octopuses are smart as can be, can change color and form, are great hunters, fierce, curious and even playful,” shared #NatGeoExplorer @JoelSartore. 🐙 I had my camera bag on the floor about ten feet away from a large circular tank with loose netting over the top. All of a sudden, a perfect arch of water comes looping up and out, landing right next to my bag. Somehow the eight-armed wonder (the giant Pacific octopus seen here at the Alaska Sealife Center) had been able to see where my bag was over the lap of the big tank he was in, gauge the distance, and then attempt to fill my camera bag with salt water. I didn’t even understand what was happening until the curator I was with said, ‘You better hurry up and move that bag. Next time he’ll hit it dead center.’ Turns out this creature was famous for this antic, and was extremely accurate at hitting any target in the room. Why? Meet Vesper - a pallid bat I photographed @lindsaywildlife. Unlike other bat species that catch their prey while in flight, pallid bats catch almost all of their food on the ground. While on the ground, they travel using a variety of gaits and strides and put their oversized ears to work detecting the footsteps of their prey. The Great Plains toad truly lives a life of leisure. A solitary, burrowing species, these toads will spend up to 77% of the year in a dormant state through aestivation and torpor. When fully awake, they may still spend up to six days inside their burrow without moving! Limas is a Black Sea bottlenose dolphin that calls the @atticazoo home. This species typically lives in groups of 2-10 individuals and has developed social structures that allow them to help one another hunt and find food sources. Normally impacted by increased tourism and boat rides through their territory, it has recently been encountered an even greater threat - Russia’s war with Ukraine. Bombs have been dropped in coastal feeding areas and pollution from spilled oil and chemical runoff has increased sharply. The journey to the base camp of the world's highest mountain was no mere stroll. I endured acute symptoms of altitude sickness, days when my head teetered on the brink of bursting; sometimes on the threshold of defeat. Yet, those were fleeting, transient trials on our journey. I realized that the world is too vast and beautiful, and we are mere specks of dust, exploring every tiny corner of what we can perceive in our transitory lives. Once found from Siberia to the eastern part of France, this species is now isolated in western Europe due to persecution and intensive agricultural practices. Increased use of pesticides coupled with the loss of uncultivated land has had a negative impact on many hamster populations, especially in parts of Europe where their numbers have traditionally been considered stable. In some areas this species faces additional threats where it is trapped or poisoned in an attempt to prevent damage to crops.
