All our new trees are planted! 338 new little trees made homes in the orchard this year (the most we’ve ever planted 😁) and with them finally in the ground we transition from spring chores to summer chores! We didn’t get as many spring chores done this year as we’d like but we’re learning that’s life and live by the mantra “we’ll do better next year” 😂🤪

Scenes from our recent mushroom foraging day trip: At home sorting the mushrooms by type - first photo shows a beautiful collection of Grey Knight washed and ready to cook in readiness to preserve. Grey Knight cooking in a large pot of salted water, for about 45 minutes. They will then be drained well before being packed tightly into jars. Slippery Jack to be washed, sliced and boiled in readiness to be preserved. One of our group’s finds - a good collection of edible mushrooms they get to take home. Is there anything fresher?! Our group carefully looking for edible mushrooms in the State forest once we’ve identified what they can and cannot collect. Disappearance No.95: I’ve recently been thinking and writing again about curiosities in the English countryside and remembered with lip-smacking pleasure the Norfolk Strawberry. Like some alien invader (it’s in the caravan perhaps) this giant fruit appeared on the A149 Snettisham bypass to act as the payment kiosk for a pick-your-own farm. I had thought it was something you bought from the P.Y.O. catalogue and maybe blew-up with a foot pump like a Lilo, but I’ve never seen another one and now it’s gone. I like to imagine that it slowly and silently lifted off the ground early one morning, pulsating with light until WHOOSH! it was gone, arcing in a trail of stardust over Hunstanton. I have a robin’s nest cradled in the rhododendron outside my desk window. Now who wouldn’t enjoy that? Well, as a blueberry farmer I have to admit I have somewhat mixed feelings about robins. And that’s putting it diplomatically. In general I don’t mind sharing a little bit of the blueberry crop with birds. However, robins are just plain aggravating. Instead of taking a berry and flying off with it, they peck holes in multiple berries. Ugh! Some of you may remember my grandfather using sound cannons to scare birds away during the blueberry season. Or perhaps you’ve seen our scary bird (hawk) kites. There’s a whole range of ways to discourage them, but of course they simply adjust. The diversity of birds on the farm is wonderful and I love hearing and watching them. I know they help keep nature in balance and are a real part of pest management for us. An interesting thing happened a couple of weeks ago. An unusual robin arrived at the farm, —a partial albino with an orange breast and yellow beak. At first glance we were very puzzled but it’s characteristic chirrs and hopping (plus binoculars) soon gave it away. I think he or she is here to soften my heart a bit toward the robin family. I wonder if it will stay around until July for the pick-your-own blueberry season to begin. #burdickblueberries #birdwatching #pickyourown #WNY

Monster Ground Elder stems. A way to cater your harvest for whatever you are cooking. Here I've got a lovely patch of Ground Elder with different stages of growth.... Near the tree shade, a bit younger and paler green, new shoots still delicate and unfurling are what ya want to go for if using GE in salad or a pasta sauce say. But for a more substantial vegetable or using like celery you can go for these big mature fronds. Areas with full sun are perfect like this small slope where the plant is racing upwards towards the light. Mid spring they are still crisp and tender. Way to go guys!! How good is this to see our foraging group immediately put into practice what we demonstrated on the day. Our mushroom foraging day trip includes a short demonstration on how to preserve what you find. And it looks like everyone did just that. I can see plenty of jars topped with olive oil and herbs, chilli and garlic, which, by the way, can all be adjusted for flavour at any time. So if you don’t get it quite right at first, all is not lost 😀. Plus the olive oil can also be used - how’s that for zero waste! No vegetable oil here 🤩. And what about Kerrie’s trays of dehydrated mushrooms? That’s exciting. I’ve not tried that. Of course, what could be better than cooking up what you’ve just collected that day?! The taste is incomparable and certainly hard to beat: Natacha’s sautéed pan of mixed mushrooms and my mum’s quick sauce to top our pasta with. They are also softer than our other varieties this year. ‘The Strawberry Story’ • An oldie but a goodie! This was my second ever food story, but it felt like my first (no disrespect to my Rhubarb story!) as this was the one that I really had a full vision for; bringing together my art direction, food and prop styling and food photography together. I was so pleased with how it turned out. • It this was all shot on my iPhone and with natural light, so very low tech, unlike my more in depth setups now! But what I loved most was how this story really came to life and made me fully fall in love with editing in @lightroom. Defining a total look and what the green and red tones would be throughout was such a joy. And I’ve never looked back in this. It’s such an integral part of my process. • I’m so excited for British strawberries now!
